@smrdo_030 same issue happened to the Nazi's in the summers of 41' heading to Moscow, 42' heading to Kyiv (just like now), and 43' when they destroyed Volgograd (formally Stalingrad). The Germans made it so far each time, then got bogged down in intractable warfare with the USSR. Regardless if it's Napoleon in the 19th century, Hitler in the 20th, or even Putin in the 21st against his ethnic brothers, occupying slavic countries is incredibly difficult long-term. These people are strong people, forged by a thousand years of hardship and the terrain and weather make all these Eastern European countries inhospitable to those that are not wanted there. You need to WORK WITH THESE people if you ever expect to increase influence there. No one by force can overtake that part of the world and hold it over the long-haul.

Their original officers have mostly been replaced, and their recruitment is now controlled by the government, which does actual screening. Sure, in a perfect world they wouldn't be in the military. But things were desperate in 2014, and they couldn't exactly controlled who showed up when they basically declared open season on the Russian army, even if they wanted to I'm not sure the situation was stable enough.
