From 6 stronghold, now 3, the war is over, Bakhmut was the logistical hub for retaking most of their lost territories, but without it they chose to go at Robotyne which was a massive blunder, heck someone like me knew they needed to attack in further north east region, push Russia back as much as they could, the attack failed miserably and they lost avdiivka. They lost their only negotiation power and they can recruit 10m, won't make any difference, it just make it easier for Russia.

Well, an even bigger problem for Ukraine and Russia as a whole in peacetime, but especially in wartime and especially critical for Ukraine is that in both Russia and Ukraine in the period from 1991 to 2003 it gave rise to a huge demographic hole. When catastrophically few children were born who are now 20-30 years old. This is a huge unborn generation both in Russia and Ukraine. I'm not even talking about the several million Russians and Ukrainians who died during this period of chaos from vodka, drugs, crime and hopelessness, and who could also have had children at that time.

I’m Russian born in that period. Or, managed to be born, more precisely. I once asked my dad why I don’t have a sibling. 195 000 is the estimated number of military personnel concentrated near the border before invasion started. According to western media the number of soldiers, involved in the first phase of war was around 85 000 or 110 battalion tactical groups. I think the real number was even smaller.

@@vasin7480 And that's also the reason why russia retreated from Kiew and Kharkov. They thought it would be an easy ride to Kiew because ucrainian army would surrender quick. The negotiations in April 2022 (Istabul) gave them a perfect reason to retreat without "losing the face". But still: the front was overstreched und unmanned which lead to the ucrainian success at Lyman and Kherson. After Kherson I was wondering, that the morale of russians was not broken and I prognosted that if they are able to capture succesful a town or important area they will be stronger/ resilienter than before. That's what happend. Kherson was so impressive, because russia was correcting successfully a strategic mistake and did not care about propaganda consequences. And for me that's the difference between russia and ucraine. Ucraine to often made sucicide missions or fought until the last man at lost battle, often only for propaganda purpurses. Even the whole summer offensive was sucicide mission wiht almost no chance for success.

It's not really up to the vast majority of Ukrainians whether they continue this war out not. The last election they had the overwhelming majority of people voted for the candidate who ran on honoring the Minsk accords, signing a peace agreement with Russia, opening up diplomacy, and trading with Russia again, keeping Ukraine a neutral country, and letting eastern Ukraine vote whether they wanted to remain part of Ukraine or join Russia. That was the platform Zelinski ran on. After he won the election, he found out someone else was calling the shots for Ukraine.

I work in one of the airports of Baltic states where I check passports of many Ukrainians. Most popular destinations for them is USA, UAE, Spain, Nice, Thailand etc... and only a handful of them fly to Rzeszow, Kishinev and other places from where they intend to go back to Ukraine. That recruitment phenomenon can NOT be seen in Russia. Russia activated former contract soldiers in the limited mobilization - not people that never have been in the army - and people SIGN UP in Russia to make contracts. That is the difference - Morale and Recruitment in Russia are working - Ukraine is at the end of the personnel pool, to say it in HR lingo. Reality - downote if you want, still reality.

Most of them fled to Russia away from the war. But not all. Many serve in the Russian army. What is offered to Russian contract soldiers by Western standards is very modest, but adjusted for Russian prices and in comparison with what Ukrainian soldiers ultimately receive, this is heaven and earth. Many also have other motivations. Some were simply angry with the Ukrainian authorities, others lost relatives.

Another aspect to this (from Ukrainian media citing officials, but i don't have the reference at hand sorry): There are 30k search warrants for draft dodgers in Poltava oblast alone, and earlier it was around 40k in Ivano-Frankish. Draft dodgers might be a strong term, they are just playing dead, but we can seriously doubt the motivation and value on the front of people that had to be snatched by the police. And for those that think that 30K is only 3% of the population, it equivalent to the males between 27 and 33 year old, all of them.

I've met numerous Ukrainian men of fighting age here in Canada. None of them, and I mean not a single one I have met, have any interest in returning to Ukraine as they say life here is much better and they have no interest in building their country. They can get a lot of support here and an easy life. The women are most interesting and far more numerous. Many have husbands and boyfriends fighting back in Ukraine. But they also have no interest in returning and often go to the clubs and bars on weekends to hook up with Canadian men. Marrying a Canadian guy is the easiest way to stay here. Though Canada has made it easy to stay with fast-tracking residency for Ukrainians here. It seems like many Ukrainians don't really care about Ukraine, and Canada, by sponsoring them to stay here, doesn't seem interested in a Ukraine of traditional Ukrainian residents there either. And yet they espouse all the fighting and dying, for a purpose of.........well, I don't know the purpose. I thought it was to preserve Ukraine for Ukrainians. But the actions of the west in supporting them to leave and not return doesn't back that. So what is the reason they encourage the fighting? The greatest zealots and supporters of Ukraine's battle is the Ukrainians diaspora here in Canada. The people whose grandparents and parents came here. They are very much in support of Ukraine. But again I don't know why as they are clearly settled migrants and Canadian citizens. Especially when the current Ukrainian citizenry doesn't seem to care. This entire thing is baffling on so many levels.

I know lots of Ukrainian background Canadians. They never seemed to talk about it all that much. Not a single one had ever been there or had any desire to go. Haven't talked to them since the war but I can't see them caring too much. It must just be liberal Ukrainian people. They look for any excuse to bitch about something.

I have met lots of Ukrainian women in Germany who have brothers, fathers, grandfathers, boyfriends, friends that are still there and either are fighting or will be fighting soon enough and they are all for the war and believe that they can win. I just say without the US you can't which means that all the men you know are just dying for a loosing fight, they are left speechless when I pointout that if the republicans win no more money will be going there and they are totaly oblivious of what is directly effecting their ability to fight. The men I talk to want the war to end and realize it can't be won, but they don't plan on moving back with their families. The women who don't have kids want to generally move back, which kinda surprised me.
