As a fellow lefty, who has both the Texas Specials and Fat50s, it's only fair to note that we lefties have the pickups upside down due to the Strat's body cavities. Since they are individually staggered poles the sound would be a little different on right handers. I managed to flip my bridge pickups 180* but the other two are technically upside down. I love both these pickups in my guitars. I play my Texas Special guitar a lot more though.

I'm a lefty who's had lots of Strats. Why did you have to put pickups in backwards? I never had to do that. I don't get it. But if that's the case, you have routed the pickup hole a bit.

On the Fat 50’s it’s possible to push the magnets out and rearrange the order to be correct. I adjusted the heights of mine since the stagger is a bit stupid for modern strings and radius of the fretboard

This is something I really love. Listening to strats as pure as possible. More and more I gravitate to it. I don't know why. Perhaps it's the old drummer in me and loving funky rhythms and clean Gilmour bends. I'm getting old fast...and with a strat or 2 , I don't feel bad about that. Something organic about the strat and a few minutes getting lost in the tones.

Owner of an american standard strat equipped with fat 50s. Nice useful comparison, thanks. I'm looking for a new pickup set to restore another used eighties japan strat I got, which has been ruined with some humbuckers and modern metal-oriented solutions (why a strat then?). First impression: 69s stand out well in solo playing. But all in all first impression is often just a matter of loudness and they're loud. Listening again and again, and skipping to listen to a pickup set in all its position, imho 69s are more balanced and focused but... a bit flat. And they tend to sound almost the same across close positions. 50s have a sound my ears are use to, and I recognize them as the strat sound. Changing positions rally change their response. Texas' sound quite similar to 50s but a bit too harsh to my ears. Highs are not rounded enough for solo playing but I guess they could sound amazing in a mix. I wanted to give my second strat a different set of pickups from the first but I guess I'm going to have another 50's. At least they have different neck woods... Best video for a fair choice, thanks.

So depends on application... Playing in the basement by myself through that sweet Princeton - love the '69s. In a band situ, I think they're a bit scooped compared to the Texas and I think the midrange on the TS would sit in a band mix better. The 50s we're sweet too. TS gets my vote overall.

I have a strat with TS pickups and while they do sound great playing clean and alone in a band context they just get eaten up by everything else to the point of my guitar not being there despite the huge volume. Comparing those to the pickups on a standard affinity squier and it's night and day, TS strat is just not there while the squier is very present and easy to hear in a band setting. Never compared TS to the 69s but I find it hard that those would be worse in a band mix, from all the guitars I've tried the TS pickups are by far the worst in a band unfortunatelly

Why do all of these various Strat pickups that Fender comes out with sound too thin, twangy or staticky to me? Not just in this demo, but all of them. Yet when I listen to Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, etc their able to achieve a very nice thick and snappy yet warm tone, full sounding chords and single note riffs? I get that part of the sound comes from their cranked large amps when playing live and the magic of recording, but it seems that some of that would be obtainable through a typical Strat and amp. I find the Fat 50’s and ceramic pickups lack clarity and snap and have an undesirable static element in the cleans. The 69’s sound weak and trebly, and the alnicos on the new Players Series for example lack warmth and thickness. I get that this is all subjective, but I’m finding it difficult to know how to achieve that amazing tone I hear on Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam (thick, snappy without being twangy), or those stunning tones on just about any Pink Floyd rock tune. I don’t mean to sound so critical, I’m just trying to understand. Why doesn’t Fender go the route of Dirty Blonde pickups or Seymour Duncan in their guitars? They seem to sound much better and more Strat like than anything Fender is using. Thanks for any suggestions.

Great video, but ...please note, that the guitars are different. Different necks (rosewood vs. maple) and probably also different bodies (e.g. alder or ash) differences in tone are also coming from the different guitars, not only from the pickups. Alder/rosewood sounds different to Ash/maple with the same pickups. In this configuration, my favorites are 69 for neck, middle texas special and bridge with fat 50. 69 ist generally great, but for me, too much low end in bridge/middle pos. - not so good for the quacky sound (like e.g. sultans of swing).

Very slight differences in specs between the Fat 50's and TS set, but the '69 a all slightly lower inductance at 2.3H. That was the standard from at least '67 on, and I believe It's misstated as 3H on the Fender site, which doesn't make sense for A5 poles at 5.6K of 42AWG. That's why they sound brighter, but I think they also have thine wire insulation, the resulting denser coil from which produces stronger lower harmonics. They all have A5 poles (with the outdated stagger finally addressed by brands like Tonerider and Waaah), but I wonder if the pole formula and Gauss is any different between them? The TS do have a very slight mid dip from eddy currents.

The insider tip for a silky, glassy and round, bell-like, fender sound with a shot of wiry and old: Get a pickup set from a Kramer Focus 3000 manufactured in Japan until 1984, because these are APS1 manufactured by Seymour Duncan with Alnico II magnets and these pickups have aged about 35 real years! You will be blown away when you hear these pickups and still put them in a good Stratocaster such as in an ESP 400-Series Stratocaster or a BLADE Texas Standard Pro or a Texas Classic! And you don`t need an Fender Custom Shop guitar for 3000,- Dollars, or more! No, You´ve paid about 500,- to 700,- Dollar and you´re playing a guitar with custom shop qualities and characteristics, Fender cannot build for 4000,- Dollars!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully the pickup covers will work with the new pickups. Any advice I appreciate.

@leadstrat Жыл бұрын
@@TheFreeman4955 you’re absolutely right. There’s very little information on it. Paul David’s did his and was the closest thing that explained it all. You’re going to have three wires with the SCN and two wires with a typical pickup. They will not be wired anything like a regular circuit. Some will go to the S1 in various points and you’ll have a ground that goes to the pot. What you do is forget about the third ground wire and wire the rest exactly where the noiseless ones were. They will work fine, but the S1 engaged will sound a little muddy. I personally found the S1 useless with regular strat pickups (I installed Fat 50s by the way) but with the switch disengaged, they worked really well. What I did is I built a custom pickguard with some nifty modifications, and kept my noiseless ones wired to the original pickguard with the S1, that way I have the original electronics and can swap if I ever want to. Hope this helps. If you need any other help with this, let me know.

Came here scared that I bought the wrong pickups (the 69s) but from the comments and your playing i think i made the right choice. Too bad my amp isnt very good, its decent (mustang lt25) but i know I wont be able to get the most out of these pickups with it. It’s gonna be a big jump as they are going into a bullet Stratocaster but they should sound great none the less.

Thanks for the comparison! Yeah the 69s are a winner in my book.

There would have to be different factors affecting the tone besides pickups only. Each guitar is different.

Between the 50s and the 69s, which ones seem more amenable to a smooth rich sound? Like John Fruschiante?

I've come back here probably 60 times. I can't decide. Do I get an American Special with TS for $1049 or American Professional with '69s for $1,624? With Princeton '65 reverb.

Texas Specials or Custom '69 for me. a small + for the "caraceter" of the Texas Specials. But the Custom '69 more efficient !

@ i would like to say : "caractere" ^^ . A french expression to talking about something very personal. In this case it would be the particular identity of the Texas Special tone beside the 2 others pick ups.

@ a kind of smothered, round, nasal quality... i hop it's correct ^^

Thank you very much for the effort made in the comparison! I like the 69's and have used them. Just a note: The Fat 50's, which have a treble role off in the high end, might sound different in a maple neck Stratocaster and be very close to the 69's- or, oh wait, the Texas specials; or, oh, wait the 57/62- Oh, wait, these were not in the comparison. GREAT JOB! PS: The 69's seem to be the definitive sound of the generation of Jimi. Please except this opinion from an old guitar playing man.

Tenho Texas Special há cerca de meio ano! Fazem pouco ruído! Têm uns baixos fabulosos. É uma solução muito profissional. Tem um leque de soluções muito vasto. Gosto bastante!

All here sound great but I think the Texas and 69's are tied for the most stratious sounding!

I wait for the Right handed comparison, but these lefty's sound good too
