This is a GREAT series! I'm completely hooked. Your historical explanation was great; as a geeky historian myself, I enjoyed it. This is why I continue to hold this channel in the highest regard.

Thanks Jay, I really appreciate that. As thehistoricalgamer pointed out, though, I probably went a little overboard on counting the Confederacy out after this battle. The tide was turned, but it wasn't irreversible until a bit further down the road.

The battle was NOT over shoes, there was no shoe factory. The battle happened there because 10 roads meet in Gettysburg like a spider web The shoe myth was started by a Confederate General Heth, trying to defend his reputation as Lee specifically said he didn’t want a general engagement yet as the army wasn’t consolidated

Lucky for you I have some experience reading topographical maps in the army! :D So at 31:46 you were mousing over high ground, while at 31:34 PRECISELY you were mousing over low ground. What 31:34 is called is a Saddle, a map feature that is a dip between two hills. Confusing? You betcha!
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. I understand topographical maps, but my problem with this game is that they aren't done correctly. You can see the northern hill has only one contour line which leads up to the peak at ~455, and the bottom hill has three contour lines leading up to ~440 or so. That means that each contour on the map does NOT represent the same step up/down in height. On precise topographical maps, the contour lines should all be at exactly some spacing (usually 10m for small contour lines, and 50m for larger or different-colored contour lines). In this game, however, they are random height jumps, so it's harder for me to make sense of them. Hope that made sense!
@jakzine5407 жыл бұрын
Oh I agree completely, it IS crappy. It MIGHT, might, be designed to express not actual Meter/foot distance, but instead levels of actual height advantage based on the incline and height of the area in question. It might be that three lines very close together indicates an arbitrarily defined area of great height difference, regardless of actual height, conferring the same advantages/maluses. I really don't know; maybe they did it for simply artistic reasons or were just lazy :P
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I think it was for artistic effect or to help out a bit. The new game (Civil War) has an alternate view which shows height much better, so I'm looking forward to that.

Question: Is there an option to let the battle simulation play out just as it did in history, or is your only option to try alternative strategies? It would be so instructive to watch the actual tactical combat play out in real time. Thanks!
@TortugaPower5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't believe so, as in no way to keep things on rails, but you could end up with a historical progression if you happen to meet the right requirements/conditions (whatever those are) at each stage.

Tourtuga imho the war was not all but over at the end of 1863. 1864 was the decisive year. Starting in 1864 despite the losses Lee suffered at Gettysburg he was able to largely replenish his forces for the Spring campaign in 1864. In 1864 the battle lines were nearly identical to the start of either 1862 or 1863 with no major territorial changes at the start of 1864. Also at the first major battle of 1864 (Battle of the Wilderness) Lee had roughly 65,000 men (he had 75,000 at gettysburg) with other parts of his forces dispersed, so not much less than he had in 1863. It was the Overland Campaign and over 40 days of continuous fighting vs Grant in 1864 that turned the tide in the east. The West was more in favor of the Union in 1864. 1863 could be called the decisive year in the war in the west but the war was not all lost by 1864. Atlanta didn't fall till late in 1864 and the strong Confederate Army of Tennessee or w/e it was called still posed a big enough threat to require W.T. Sherman to maintain an army roughly 100,000 strong to ensure the conquest of Atlanta and the gutting of the heart of the Deep South.
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I see your points, that might have been an overstatement while caught up in the recording, or "Recording Brain" as I call missteps on camera. However, I think the argument can still be made because: the back of the North was nearly broken before Gettysburg, and the only real way for the South to win was by draining support for the war. There was almost no way they could have beaten (or outlasted) a determined North. So if you view the war from this perspective, Gettysburg and Vicksburg revitalized the North and made the task of conquest or outlasting the North's sentiments on the war almost an impossibility. That all said, I'd tone down and agree it'd be better to say 1863 "was the turning point" than "the war was all over". Cheers.
@thehistoricalgamer7 жыл бұрын
TortugaPower If someone less persistent or skilled than Grant and Sherman ended up in command in the fall of 1864 you could have seen the South win by performing well and demoralizing the north then forcing Lincoln from office, his opponent was running I believe on a negotiated settlement platform.

Once the West was lost, the CSA knew it couldn't win. The year 1864 was a staunch defensive position for the Confederate forces without any gain, just loss. The western theatre doesn't get much attention, but in 1863 with all the major loses in the west and Gettysburg in the east, the CSA's back was broken and Lee and Davis both knew it.I
@tylerjerabek52042 жыл бұрын
@@jasonwalters4119 the CSA got in to the edge of Washington DC in 1864, Grant had moved units to help slow down them down at the battle of Monocacy The CSA wasn’t trying to win in the traditional sense but to make the Union tired of the fight and to encourage people to vote against Lincoln - who thought he was going to lose reelection in 1864

Hey Tortuga, just a friendly suggestion; trim that intro (everything before actual gameplay is an intro) bit in your future videos. 13 full minutes of looking at the same menu and listening to you talk is utterly and mind blowingly dull.
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
It's true, I'm aware of this flaw in my recording style. I left an annotation with a link to jump to the gameplay, and I also mentioned in the video to skip to the 10 minute mark for the actual gameplay, do you think those two things are not enough?
@ChristianNelsonn7 жыл бұрын
TortugaPower Honestly, I just skipped until the screen changed and then realised there was yet another menu and more explaining so I just closed the video. I wasn't feeling great and it just rubbed me the wrong way I guess. Don't get me wrong I open your videos to listen to from time to time while I do other stuff, like a podcast. But this one I actually was watching and didn't want to go through 15 minutes of menu watching, and since I skipped the video and didn't look at the description, I didn't see the skipping info.
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. I also alternate b/w a podcast-style viewing (when I'm doing something else) and actively watching. At 1:05 in the video I mentioned skipping ahead, but that might already have been too late for people like yourself interested in gameplay. For me, the the little quotes and back stories are of great interest, so I include them. I know not everyone will be a fan, but maybe that's what separates a channel like mine from the really good channels (like TheHistoricalGamer, Quill18, etc.). Anyway, I appreciate the polite feedback, even when you were annoyed :)

Be careful with the Stuart bash for Gettysburg. Stuart was doing what he did a couple of times before and always with Lees agreement. And to make matters worse, Lee got I believe 2 brigades cav left even without Stuart. But those were irregulars and Lee didnt trust them to do recon. So it was ultimately Lees fault not to know about the Union army.
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that's an interesting opposing viewpoint, which I didn't know about. The account I know of casts a negative judgment on Stuart, and that's what I relayed here. Always nice to hear more of the full story.

Its still Stuarts fault; Lee trusted him and he knew it, and he let his wounded pride get in the way of doing his job. Lee dressed him down upon his return for it as well

I don't think the contour of the height is actually leveled up by the lines. The lines also have a distance between them. Notice back on Oak Ridge at 456 doesn't have that long slope the other hill has. So that's why it seems out of whack. I could be wrong😬
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Yep, I think you're right! Somewhere later in this series I even provide pretty compelling evidence to this effect.

TortugaPower Yay! Pretty good for a noob. I got about 20 hours into the game. It's damn hard, but I like that. Never seen such a smart AI. I actually got to about the 5th battle, for a major victory, and for some reason it took me back to the main menu. I guess it wanted more. Anyway, keep up the good videos.
@scottygdaman3 жыл бұрын
I really think Lee had lost it. Possible onset of something brought on by exhaustion? Was it Longstreet? Said to Lee they had achieved the goals set by Lee and the confederacy should not think they can beat the union in a prolonged engagement involving mass amounts of troops . The union having much better access to all resources in that area. Lee changed his own plan. Few talk about the battle just after Gettysburg. The battle of Chickamauga was another extremely tragic battle for the south. Many many casualties and great loss of resources. Look into this battle.

Hey Tortuga what do you mean when you smell the roses
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
It's an expression meaning to take your time to explore what's around you as you go, and not be rushed. I think the phrase comes from if you are walking on a trail, you can either try to get to the end of the trail quickly, or you can take your time and stop to look at the flowers on path, smell them, etc.
@antares4s7 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely ridiculous having units running a ring around the enemy. It would never happen in the real world. I have even seen retreating units run right through the enemy. This is a major flaw in the game. Units run at the drop of a hat. The game has a strong bias toward the defensive.
@TortugaPower7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd even classify it as a "bug" and not a working mechanic, although some argued to the contrary on the forums. But I _think_ they have fixed or made it a lot better in UG Civil War.
@antares4s7 жыл бұрын
Yea CW units were pretty stoic. They didn't run like this game would have you believe (except for the 11 Corps), but when a unit like Pettigrew with 2000 men runs from skirmishers then something is very very wrong. The game definitely prefers the defense over the offense even at the lowest level. You can get 2/3 of the way from Herr Ridge to Seminary Ridge and the game will classify it as a crushing defeat.
