On my last trip to Japan I spent a day in Nara. It's really a wonderful place to relax, especially after spending time in a big city. I'll definitely go back, hopefully during autumn to see the beautiful colors.

When I went to Todai-ji in summer last year. It was incredible! We got stuck inside during a huge rainstorm, while a wedding photoshoot was happening. It was an amazing experience, and a privilege to witness.

i stayed at that exact same temple, about 10 years ago ... i remember there were a number of tiger statues and imagery, but i didn't speak enough japanese to ask why ... and they gave us a tour through a completely darkened tunnel within the temple, along with a tourguide explaining things in japanese that we could not understand ... it was a great experience, despite the language barrier. :)

Nara is an ancient capital, so there are many ruins and few buildings. This is the place where recently discovered relics such as a giant snake sword and a shield with two mirrors embedded in them appear.

In Nara city is also a little mall, which got a really cool "Goldfish museum". There are several of these around Japan, but I thought the one in Nara was the best one so far (it's also the biggest and cheapest for entry!)

Nara, is over-run with touristas. Local, small independent businesses are adversely impacted - dependent on local business, their regular customers avoid the area because of the throngs of foreginers crowding out those who actually live in Nara. The recent construction of hotels downtown, two very expensive hotels in Nara Park are a gross manifestation of industrial tourism. Add to that the Marriott nearby Shin-Omiya. Quaint 'guides' to Nara, no matter their intent are another manifestation. Stay home or go somewhere else, maybe Las Vegas or LA. Or Thailand.
