For a large batch of challah that will freeze beautifully!( yields about 7 -9 large challah )
2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs of bread flour ( if you do not use bread challh, the results will not be as good: it will give you a very dense challah)
50g or 1/4 cup salt
50g /or 1/4 cup sugar ( you can easily double the amount to have a sweet challah )
1 1/2 cups or 375ml of neutral oil
6 eggs for the challh recipe
2-3 eggs to do challah egg-wash depending if you use the egg yolk alone or do my go to egg-wash: 1 full egg, 1 tsp salt, 2tbsp water mix and you have the perfect egg-wash!)
1-2 cups ( 250-500ml) warm water
Topping: your choice!!
for the yeast cake
15g / 1 heaping spoon of sugar of sugar
30g or 3tbsp yeast
2 cups of warm water
TIP FOR BAKING:
use the convect mode on your oven
if you do not have the convect mode on your oven rotate your trays in the oven after 20 minutes of baking ( NOT BEFORE!!!) otherwise the challah will collapse :(
for 2 medium challot
Flour: 500g or 3cups+ 2 TBSP ( if you dunk your cup in the flour) but 4 cups and 1tbsp of you spoon and level to measure your cups of flour
While measuring your flour

I've tried your challah recipe already and I love the taste, however I think I can't get the baking right. Can you help? Since I currently have to live away by myself I make mini challot (I use around 100g of dough for each) so that I can have two whole loaves for each Shabbat meal and not waste too much. I do three strand braids or four strands, usually long (like the letter ו) or round for Rosh Hashana. I feel like I always overbake them because I am scared of underbaking them. Can you give me a tip how long to bake them and at what temperature? Thank you so much for this video and all the other ones. You make me feel like I have a family or friend who understands me and I'm not alone. I am very grateful. B"H ❤

I am Catholic and have a tremendous love and respect for my Jewish brothers and sisters. Salvation for all comes from the Jewish faith. God bless you and your family. I enjoy your sharing all aspects of your traditional way of life. Living close to your faith with everything you do gives you the joy that is obviously comes across in your videos. @@frumitup Absolutely! Bacteremia sepsis has fried my brain a little bit but the first example off the top of my head is my photography. I spend a lot of time in the hospital or various doctor's offices and I firmly believe that the staff does not get enough gratitude or credit. So I print up some of my scenic photos and when I pick up the order of them, I take each individual one in my hands and I pray. "Lord Gott, I don't know who this photo will wind up in the hands of, but I ask You to bless them." One of my all time favorite things to do is that at every shift change, I ask each nurse and each CNA to choose an extra photo. Then I jot a little prayer, a Scripture verse, or simply a note of encouragement on the back of it and have them give it to a patient that is having a particularly rough time. (If they desire to participate, obviously. Over the years, I've had two people decline to participate and I certainly understand! It's not for everyone.) I figure it's win-win-win. I get to be reminded to pray for the other patients, the other patient gets a little reminder that a stranger cares and is praying for them, and the staff member gets to be the person to facilitate God's love. I hope this does not sound prideful, as it certainly is not meant to be. It is just the first example off the top of my head and I LOVE doing it. So much love and prayers to you and your family tonight, sweet Sara!

As I watched you making your Challah I was amazed at the beauty of the dough. I used to be a baker and the bakery I worked at was known in the local Jewish community for the Challa we made. We were not a Jewish bakery but we did ask the local temple to come and make sure we didn't do anything that would render the Challa not kosher or unusable for the local Jewish community. They gave us their blessing and would come in on the days we were making the Challa. My favorite part of making the Challah was braiding it! That was so much fun! And making the round Challa was a joy! Thank you for giving me a recipe for Challa again! The bakery closed years ago and I lost the recipe we used. I just know I love Challa but I am happy that I can make Challah for my Jewish friends who are baking challanged. Thank you!

I hope it's okay for a man to make challah, because I did today. I have a life goal: “to become famous with my grandkids.” I have 5. So I thought we could return to Shabbat. My mom was Sephardic, but we did not celebrate Shabbat. I feel it's time. The bread is braided and rising. I'm glad I figured out how to play KZbin at 25% speed to figure out the braid. I love Challah. Oh, yes I did pray at the start for all to go well. Here’s hoping!

I loved this video. I have always assumed that there were too many ‘rules’ to Judaism. Now I can see the error of my thinking. Everything that you do is done with intention. Once one is familiar with ‘why’ something is done, the act becomes more of a habit and not looked at as a burden or obscure rule. Explaining your prayers through each step of the Challah process was truly beautiful. Thank you for inviting me into your channel. I feel so welcome, and I have learned so much!

My Challah turned out beautifully...on my first try because you are a patient teacher. What excited me most is that FINALLY another woman is using a mixer like mine. I've been baking bread with my Bosch Magic Mixer since 1977. Now, however, I am no longer a new mother, but a great-grandmother with three sons, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. My boys came home from school to the smell of baking bread (bringing their friends of course), all made in my precious Bosch Mixer. The amazing smell of baking bread fulfilled not only the hunger of their bodies, but their hunger for tradition, family, and love for one another. I loved giving the gift of those memories to my sons. Making a beautiful Challah was something I always dreamed of being able to do, but I was too intimidated to try...after all Challah is above and beyond bread as you taught in this video. I cannot thank you enough for the loving Challah lesson, with the mixer that has sustained my family for over fifty years, and your blessing at the end of the video that brings peace to my heart and tears to my eyes...I so yearn for the days when my children were tiny and as close as the kitchen table instead of spread out over Canada and the U.S. leaving me alone. Your blessing is so needed and appreciated. Thank you beyond words.

Bread making and baking is something I don't do often because there are so many steps and I want to do it well. I love challah! Sara, I can't wait to try your recipe. A couple of things: 1. Your work clothes in this video looked both beautiful and comfortable! 2. My late Mom had absolutely NO luck with making anything with yeast.😊 She made great quick breads, but yeasted breads of any kind something would go seriously wrong. She could laugh about it though, so it made her quick breads even more delicious! I hope you and your family have a wonderful and joyous week!

Dear Sara, how many lovely memories you have brought forth watching you make challah! My Mother was an excellent bread baker. As I watched your hands dance across the dough, I was reminded of how much love my Mother put into all her baking. She always shared the bread she made with others: to the church bake sales, to our family at all the holiday meals, to the neighbors, and to me after I was married as a reminder that I was special to her. Unfortunately, Mama never shared her skill at baking her own bread with anyone. Watching you show step by step bread making with not only a practical side, but a prayerful side makes me wonder if I could do so as well. I love challah, and I love watching your videos my friend. May G.od bless you today and always.

Your video is wonderful. I’m learning to make a similar Ukrainian Christmas bread called Kolach. I’ve learned so much about this from watching Challah videos. Given the similarities in the recipes and appearance of both breads I assume that the origin of the bread came from Jewish tradition first. Thank you for this beautiful and informative video.

Dearest lady, your voice gives you away. You are an extremely generous person. Our faiths and culture are far apart, but also very similar. I have learnt so very much about the life of orthodox jews and their customs. I treasure every moment I spend listening to you. What a gentle soul your are. Your family is quite blessed to have you. I think a bit differently now, when I come across people who worship different from myself. I am a Christian and although we have a few things that are different, deep down inside we all strive to live godly and modestly. I enjoyed this video immensely. I have baked a challah bread before, I love that bread, it's quite delicious. God bless. 😊😊😊
