Valve Adjustment Procedure for GY6 150cc
Valve clearance ("valve lash", "tappet clearance") can affect the way the engine runs. It's the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem. If it is too large, the valve won't open all the way (and you'll get a loud "clattering" noise) and if it is too small (or non-existent), the valve may not properly close. Either way is a problem. You either won't get fuel/air into the cylinder properly or you won't get good compression and/or exhaust and the valve may overheat and suffer damage.
To adjust the valves the engine must be COLD. If it's not cold, the setting will be wrong. Then remove the valve cover. On single cylinder engines there are two valves (one exhaust, one inlet). Then follow the instructions in your manual if you're lucky enough to have one that gives them. If not then you can try this. Put the scooter on the center stand and/or a jack so that the back wheel is off the floor. Put a wrench on the nut holding the center of the fan and rotate the engine until it's at what is known as "Top Dead Center" (TDC), which is when the piston is at it's highest on the compression stroke. This may be marked with a "T" on the flywheel (see image below) At this point both valves should be fully closed and the gap between the rocker arm and valve stem (clearance) should be at its maximum. Both rocker arms will be at minimum height positions on the camshaft lobes. There may be marks on the flywheel to indicate TDC, and/or there may be marks on the outside of the cam sprocket. Check your user manual if you have one.
If you can't find any timing marks for TDC you can rotate the engine clockwise the cam lobe is about 180 degrees away from the rocker arm. This means that the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve should be at it's maximum and you should be able to wriggle the rocker arm back and forth a bit (that's the clearance). You can also remove the spark plug, put a straw into the cylinder and rotate the engine until you feel the piston is at its maximum height both valves are fully closed (note that there are two position in a 4-stroke engine at which the piston is at it's maximum height in the cylinder. Be sure you get the right one). Once you're at TDC, loosen the locking nut and adjust the clearance using a set of feeler gauges. When you have it set correctly, tighten down on the lock nut, and re-check it. Now do the same thing again for the other valve. For most 150cc GY6 engines the clearance should be around .004", but check your manual. For 50cc engines I've seen .002" recommended.

Does the ground wire go from the valve cover to the battery? I bought a used moped and the wire is to the valve cover but the other end is loose. Thanks.
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips 11 ай бұрын
In most cases, the ground wire in a scooter does not directly connect from the valve cover from the battery. The ground wire is typically responsible for providing a return path for electrical current and is usually connected to the frame of the scooter and them connected to the valve cover, which then acts as the common ground point for various electrical components. It's possible that the previous owner of the moped may have made modifications or changes to the wiring, leading to the ground wire being attached to the valve cover. Thank you for watching my video

Ive got a 150cc Powermax chinese scooter...i replaced the the spark plug, new air filter, new carburetor, new fuel/air lines and petcock; im still having performance issues though. Ill be riding (1/2 or 3/4 throttle) and occasionally it will slightly bog down and lose power. If i play with the throttle a bit it will sometimes come out of it, but then other times itll stay like that until ive reached my destination and wont run right until after im heading back home...i plan to replace the CDI next, but next to that, are there any thoughts you might have on whats causing this?
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips 3 ай бұрын
It sounds like you've done a fair bit of troubleshooting already, which is great. The symptoms you're describing-a scooter that bogs down and loses power intermittently, especially at partial throttle-can be indicative of several issues. Let's explore some possibilities beyond the CDI: Ignition System Issues: While you're planning to replace the CDI, it's also worth checking the ignition coil and the stator. Faulty components in the ignition system can lead to intermittent power loss. Fuel System Problems: Even with a new carburetor and fuel lines, there could still be issues within the fuel system. Ensure that the fuel tank is clean and free of debris, and double-check that the fuel lines are properly connected and not kinked. Additionally, verify that the fuel filter is clean and not clogged, as restricted fuel flow could cause power loss. Vacuum Leaks: Any air leaks in the intake system can disrupt the air-fuel mixture and cause performance issues. Check all connections from the carburetor to the engine for leaks, including gaskets and intake manifold connections. Exhaust System Blockage: A blocked exhaust can lead to back pressure, causing the engine to run poorly. Check the exhaust system for obstructions or restrictions, such as a clogged muffler or exhaust pipe. Electrical Connections: Ensure all electrical connections are secure and free of corrosion. Loose connections or corrosion can lead to intermittent electrical problems, including power loss. Engine Timing: Incorrect ignition timing can cause poor engine performance. While this is less common on small scooters, it's still worth checking if you've exhausted other possibilities. Compression Issues: Low compression can lead to power loss. Perform a compression test to ensure the engine is operating within the manufacturer's specifications. Quality of Replacement Parts: While you've replaced several components, it's essential to consider the quality of the replacement parts. Sometimes, aftermarket parts may not perform as well as OEM parts, leading to continued issues. Overheating: Check for signs of overheating, such as a hot engine or exhaust. Overheating can cause performance issues and damage engine components. Engine Tuning: Lastly, ensure the engine is properly tuned. This includes adjusting the idle speed, air-fuel mixture, and throttle cable tension according to the manufacturer's specifications. By methodically checking each of these potential issues, you should be able to narrow down the cause of the performance problems with your scooter. If you're still unable to resolve the issue after replacing the CDI and investigating these possibilities, it may be helpful to consult a professional mechanic with experience working on scooters. Thank you for watching my video and if you have more question feel free to contact me anytime

@VirberelloScooterTips because my scooter is one of those cheaply made chinese bikes, the exhaust was the first thing to go on it; just broke off out of nowhere. I tried a couple times to get it recounted with no luck so I just do without it. And while I know that not having an exhaust can effect performance and gas mileage, I don't believe that it is the source of my problem as this issue presented itself almost 2 years after losing the exhaust...I'm in the middle of breaking down the OEM Carb for cleaning, I would really like to re-jet it but I don't quite understand the process behind it and not confident I'd do it right, so I'll just replace the current jets in it and keep it for a spare... after the new CDI arrives though, I think my next step will be checking the air/fuel mixture because I believe that is where my problem lies

My friend did this on my gy6 sym fiddle 2 but since then both wheels have been stuck on the ground i.e. not pivoting when on centre stand, very hard to turn wheels to put in air. Engine seems fine now, turned out to just be a loose coil wire but as I can't understand how adjusting gaps could lower the wheels I'm scared to ride it now in case something else structural has gone. Any ideas what could cause this?
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips 8 ай бұрын
It's unusual for adjusting the gaps on a GY6 scooter to cause both wheels to be stuck on the ground when on the center stand. Here are a few things to consider and check in this situation: Center Stand Issue: Make sure that the center stand is functioning correctly. It's possible that the center stand itself is not properly engaged or is obstructed in some way, preventing the wheels from lifting off the ground. Rear Suspension: The rear suspension could be the culprit. If the suspension has been improperly adjusted or tampered with, it might not be allowing the rear of the scooter to lift properly. Check for any issues with the rear shock absorbers, springs, or suspension components. Wheel Bearings: If the wheels are hard to turn, it could be a problem with the wheel bearings. If they are damaged or not properly lubricated, they can create excess friction and prevent the wheels from spinning freely. Brake Calipers or Pads: Check the brake calipers and brake pads on both wheels. If they are not releasing properly, they can create friction against the rotors and prevent the wheels from turning freely. Tire Pressure: Make sure that the tire pressure is correct. Low tire pressure can make it more difficult to lift the scooter on the center stand. Alignment: Incorrect wheel alignment can also make it difficult to turn the wheels. Check if the wheels are properly aligned and adjust them if necessary. Inspect Recent Adjustments: Since you mentioned that your friend did some adjustments, review the work they did. Ensure that nothing was inadvertently changed that could affect the scooter's ability to go on the center stand. If you're unable to identify and fix the issue yourself, it's advisable to take the scooter to a qualified mechanic or service center for a thorough inspection. Riding a scooter with unknown structural issues can be dangerous, so it's essential to ensure that everything is in working order before using it again.

Wow many thanks for such a comprehensive list to work through. I've already replaced the centre stand but will check thru the rest & yes defo not riding it until I know understand what's causing it. All my local bike shops seem to be permantly booked up but hopefully will find someone knowledgeable to help figure out what's going on. & well it might be time to finally look at getting a new bike, just don't want to give up on it yet.

Hello I have a 49cc puma scooter and the plate on there says a valve adjustment is 006 and 008 Do you think that's a misprint from the factory?
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips Жыл бұрын
It is unlikely that the valve adjustment specification on your Puma scooter is a misprint from the factory. The valve clearance for an engine is an important specification that must be set correctly to ensure proper engine performance and longevity. In general, the valve clearance specification is measured in thousandths of an inch or millimeters, and it can vary depending on the specific make and model of the engine. It is possible that the valve clearance on your Puma scooter is set to 0.006 inches on the intake valve and 0.008 inches on the exhaust valve. However, it is important to note that without more specific information about your scooter's engine, it is difficult to say for certain whether these are the correct valve clearance specifications. You may want to consult the owner's manual or a qualified mechanic for more information on setting the valve clearance on your Puma scooter. Thank you for watching my video

When i turn fan and T, valve clearance iş so much, but when i make one more turn and T , clearance iş so small.but there iş valve noise.which position must İ select to adjust valves?
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips 2 жыл бұрын
Hello I like the combination of the T marrk and the camshaft gear holes alignment at the same time to make sure
@richardgreene6810
@richardgreene6810 2 жыл бұрын
As Virbello explains about the camshaft gear holes. This is because the crankshaft turns 2 times for every turn of the camshaft. In your situation, the first time you rotated to T you were at the compression cycle of TDC; which means both valves were closed. That is where you want to be. But the second time you rotated to T you were at the exhaust cyle of TDC; which means the exhaust valve was opened.

I tried to adjust the valves but I just could not do it right. Everyone says adjusted to .004 or or something different in every video that I watch. whatever they tell you to adjusted to that measurement is never on the valve feller I bought three of them and none of them say .004 the only thing I can find is 004 and that's what I adjusted it too and now and it clicks clicks clicks clicks and I even tried to readjusted the valves and it's doing the same thing. And the reason I tried to adjust the valves in the first place is my moped has no power it will start it will run but when I get it on the road I can't get it over 10 or 15 miles an hour and it never started until my CVT belt broke and I replaced it and after that that's when it started acting up

@VirberelloScooterTips 3 ай бұрын
If the hole don’t line up you did something wrong in the process because they have to line up without forcing unless you replace the part and you have an A motor part instead of a B motor part for gy6 motor

Hey! Where did you connect the black hose from the valve cover? Can i damage the engine if i dont connect it? Love your content!
@VirberelloScooterTips
@VirberelloScooterTips 5 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend no you don't damage the engine you only going to spray a mix of oil and smokes around your motor and that is not good if the oil go on your brakes or in places where little oil is not supposed to be so put that hose where it supposed to go at soon is possible right under your air filter connection or in a catch can. Thank you for watching my video and if you have a question in the future feel free to ask

@@VirberelloScooterTips Yes exactly just as shown in this video But the black hose that goes from the valve cover goes to the tube that runs between the air box and the carburetor I don't exactly have a gy6 but have a similar 150cc engine. So I am a little thoughtful about how I will do because I will remove the entire tube when I put on my kn filter
