I’ve worn roundhouse low back bibs for years most comfortable bibs I’ve owned. I’ve owned Carhartt, liberty, pointer, keys, and big smith . You get these bibs 4” larger than your pant size since the band runs across the fattest part of you belly, also they only have one percent shrinkage. Awesome video! I've worn Liberty's, Keys, and roundhouse and my favorite thus far is Roundhouse. Being a Machinist, I usually always keep my bib pocket loaded with measuring equipment, sharpies, and other metal working tools and having a bib with open pockets is a huge must for me. The zipper pockets get in the way for what I do. Plus I'd much rather give my money to an American product rather than a foreign one when it comes to bibs.
@waynenoll19672 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I didn’t mind paying more for Carhartt when they were made here because they were quality. Now they make their stuff at the same overseas places like everyone else and still charge premium prices. Can’t beat Roundhouse for a simple, quality product at a fair price. But only order from the factory, the Roundhouse they sell at Walmart and many of the “farm and fleet” type stores are made in Vietnam.
@zacharyjasinski96763 жыл бұрын
At $80 the roundhouse isn't a great buy, but over the last few years I've never seen them sell for anything other than $50. Their carpenter jeans are the same way, always "on sale" with 80 bucks marked out and 50 bucks being the price. I think the simpler build is a little more forgiveable when you figure that 30 bucks cheaper in. Worn their jeans and bibs for a few years now and personally think they're a steal at $50, and American made is always a plus.
@mibnsharpals11 ай бұрын
A comparison of the material quality with the R1 and Roucndhouse does not justify 80. More like 40 - 50 and I bought it for that price. They are nice summer dungarees.

I came in a Patagonia guy, I'm leaving a Patagonia guy and this video def helped. I have a set of John Deere bibs I really love which are tough, stylish, and soften up nicely, REI doesn't offer a mens bib at the moment, that I could find anyways, I've never owned any Patagonia but the hemp seems attractive from a comfort angle. I need something that can take occasional abuse, but be functional most of the time in daily wear, I wear them for functional use and style points to be honest. NOBODY wears them for fashion but I get compliments all the time for my Deere's. I think the Round House would be great for the woodworker. The Carhartt for the guy working in brutal conditions. The Duluth being a hybrid probably. Same with the Patagonia. I started wearing bibs b/c I found 2 beat up pairs in my grandpa's basement when he died, I took them, sewed some cool patches on the chest pockets and they are sentimental and I love them. Another reason why I wear them, they remind me of him. The winemaker, the electrician.

I have worn and seen many of these bibs on the job and I can say the best ones I’ve ever worn are the tough duck deluxe unlined bibs. They have a full front zipper which makes taking them off super easy and remind me of the old Carhartt quality (as in tough seams and longevity). They have most of the protection features of the carhartts like the bottom of the leg and double knees and are usually cheaper. They don’t fit quite as tight so it works with layering. The only downside is a bit less pocket space, but I’ve found that I usually don’t need to carry around my entire toolbox on my pants all day so it works out fine. If you are going to do a part two of this video comparing more brands I would love to see the tough ducks on there and even the Filson tin cloth bibs if you want to spend that much. I’ve been searching KZbin forever to find a video like this and it is great to finally have such a good one! Thank you and keep up the great videos. -Henry

I love both weights of carhartts canvas, they are truly indestructible. However, for daily drivers, liberty is alot cooler in the summer, tuck into snow packs or rubber boots in the winter, and have alot less "stuff" piled up when putting in windshield time. Not to mention, all of this is under forty bucks. You can even zip stuff up in the huge main pocket if you are going to be upside down reaching into somewhere you don't want your phone to go. And, the huge pockets will hold things like 12 inch water pump pliers or a 1911 for those sketchy equipment retrieval.

Thank you for this great review. I've worn bibs almost every day for the last 10 years and appreciate your observations. As a mostly Roundhouse wearer, I agree that they're getting left behind in some ways with their staunchly conservative approach to design (please make them with a gusset!). They're all great designs, though I bought one pair of Duluths and that was the last. The thing you touched on with the Duluths, and I can't help but adding, is that their shoulder strap material is too wimpy. They have a huge breast pocket and when you load it halfway full the whole bib bobs up and down as you walk because the straps aren't strong enough. Duluth, please consider strengthening these straps.

I got a few pairs of the Duluth on sale. I love how bibs give you freedom of movement. As a carpenter I’m squatting, climbing, half kneeling and what not all day every day. Having knee pads in the bibs is amazing. A few things I don’t like, is that the clasps on the shoulders will fall apart. Rendering them useless, i was able to repair them with copper wire. Also the shoulder straps can’t hold much weight, if you load them with tools they stretch out. Other than that I love them and seeing this I want a pair of the Patagonia’s.

I don’t know exactly how, but I’ve accumulated about 8 pairs of bibs ranging from Duck to denim and from carhartt, to Dickie’s to key, to liberty and Redkap. And out of all of them, I usually gravitate towards the old school heavy denim ones. I have the carhartt R08, and a raw denim by Dickie’s and a raw denim by redkap and Key and they are my favourites. Pretty basic pocket layouts on the bibs so I don’t get lost in pockets and just something about the heavy denim I like over duck. I get teased a bit because I’m only 24 and I have the taste of an 80 year old farmer but for work on the railway comfort overtakes style in my opinion.

Currently wearing Carhartt R01's. The last pair I could find. I traveled from the west coast all across to the east coast and found one pair left. I cant stand the front pocket on the new Carhartt or the Duluth. I have tried them both, and I still prefer the two snap version of the old R01's or even the Dickies style. For this reason I'll be going with Round House for my next pair. I've spent too many years with the nice front pockets. I also really don't care for the elastic gusset's on the new Carhartt bibs. Just not my thing. I really appreciate the overview of each of these, clothing is one of the things in life where two people will rarely have the exact same opinion. Haven't tried any of the brands pictured here (although I've bought a number of Duluth Trading items), but for years (and I do mean years) I wore Key Brand bibs. At the time that I wore (and love) these bibs, there were made of 14 oz. denim. They switched all of a sudden, and I found myself receiving 12 oz. denim bibs, recognizable by the extra layer of fabric backing the shoulder strap buttons. The bibs felt sort of cheesy. They're still making them out of 12 oz. denim today, so I don't know if I'd recommend them. I do, however, wear Key Brand jeans, particularly now their double-front carpenter/contractor jeans with the suspender buttons. Excellent, sturdy (14 oz. denim again), and handy. As I'm not fashion show runway material, and don't much care about being trendy, these jeans are excellent for me and the way I live. In addition to the hammer loop and tool pocket on the legs, there's what I've been using as a cell phone pocket on the left leg, opposite the tool pocket. Very nice...and reasonably priced.

A couple other options to look at are Big Smith and Key. I use both on a daily basis and personally I prefer the Big Smith for comfort level. Key are more durable but also less breathable in the warmer months. I just wish that Big Smith would make the zipper longer as it is a pain to hit the head with the shorter zippers. And the elastic on the shoulder straps is just a bad idea. I've never had a pair that didn't stretch and lose the ability to keep my bibs up where they need to be. Also Key and Big Smith are half the price of the Carhartt and Roundhouse being at around $35-$45 depending on where you get them.

Keys are my personal favorites as far as denim overalls go. They fit me the best out of all the ones I've worn thus far and I like that you get one open top pocket for quick access and one flap pocket to keep things secure so when you undo your bib to sit on the toilet everything doesn't come tumbling out.

Great video. I've wore Roundhouse for years. I find that they are more of a traditional style as well. Their sizing also goes back to more of the way overalls were sized in the past. Generally two to four inches bigger in the waist than your normal britches size. Bigger barrel chested fellows will need to add to that number even more. You hit the nail on the head as well when you mentioned loose threads and stitches. That's my biggest complaint with them.

The Dickie bibs (to me) don't cut it to an extent. They tend to fall apart quickly, & by quickly I mean most wont last a single season. I live in the midwest, bought my bibs last winter. Three months in and the zipper front fell apart. I did like the feel of them though, & had a seamstress replace the zipper with snap buttons instead. It had a inner breast pocket, a snap pocket & a open pocket on the chest. On the waist it has 2 pockets on top of a opening to the inner layers( to reach the pockets of a pants under the bibs) if one chose to have it over clothes On the rear it had two pockets one zippered one open. On the legs ,the right leg has a pocket within another pocket. On the left it had a loop & a pocket. The feel was durable tough and the fabric still provides plenty of solid feel to it. I scrap for a liveing & need strong gear to take the daily punishment of working with metal. Which the dickies have done the job well. Other then the zipper issues it's a fantastic affordable bib or coveralls to use. Just don't expect the zippers to handle the day to day ware.

Good job of discussing the pros and cons of each brand. Long looks at the features of each. I feel like I have been at the store actually looking at these. Those Round House look sweet, but your review pointed out some serious flaws even for casual wearers. The Carhartts are in first place for me right now. I really like my Carhartt flannel lined heavyweight denim jeans. Except that they make the front pockets way too deep and the top of the pockets way to tight. Nearly impossible to reach the change at the bottom of the pocket. And the coin pockets are too damn small to even get two fingers in. Their new heavyweight denim jeans are the same except for the funky new "stretch" denim they use. I love my Round House overalls. L.C. King is another fantastic brand. The Round House overalls are a great choice and economically attractive.

It is a nice touch. Same reason I like Keys too with that nice green stripe across the front.

The watch pocket on RoundHouse overalls really isn't a true pocket. It's really just another opening into the chest pocket. I carry a pocket watch and if have to drop the bib (aka burrito incident) my watch slides out the top of the pocket and hits the floor. Plus, the straps on RoundHouse are always a little short for me. I guess I have a longer torso than average. I have to adjust them all the way out to keep from raising my voice pitch a few octaves, if ya know what I mean.

Carl I don’t mean to overstep but how tall are you? My mental image of your physique exploded when you said you had a 34” waist (partly cause KZbinrs are typically tall for some reason) and in my head you were like 6’ 38” waist.

Intro inviting ppl to try bibs to farmer and iron worker have different needs so theyll want different things isn’t a good flow but in the end that’s just how bibs are! Even tho I haven’t tried the Patagonia I like carthartt first. I don’t like how soft/flexible denim bibs are, didn’t like how soft/flexible the Duluth were, if I was aiming for soft/flexible but extra protection a bit higher I would wear pants and a heavy shirt. I also wear extra wide bibs(in the FR world this is very common to do) so even tho I am a 34 waist 28 inseam I always get 40 waist 28 inseam.(carthartt also has waist/inseam instead of S/M/L/XL) the softer/flexible material that will be the right size in the winter when I wear sweats/jacket underneath is too loose and floppy in the summer that it poses a hazard while carthart stays stiff and holds its shape off of my body(great airflow in the summer). As you mentioned in the end even tho these are my points it comes down to buy different types and you will find your preference. I also have to say I don’t wear bibs everyday at work, I have them in the vehicle and some jobs are better suited for them while others are not.

Every pair I’ve had with elastic anywhere it goes out.don’t like my stuff in bib pockets hitting the floor zipper is necessary. Liberty is good.looking for better if there is any. ?.??

The Patogonia clasp falls apart in the dryer. Metal part joining the bottom comes loose and falls apart.

you didn't talk about the cut at the bottom of the pants. This makes them easier to wear casually if the cut fits casual shoes and boots well, but boot cut pants are very baggy and wide at the bottom and make guys feel awkward outside a work area. Womens variations include many fashionable and casual versions, but for guys we have to just wear our boot cut rolled dup over a pair of converse and strut with confidence.

Great review. Used to love the Carhartt but, since they have in my opinion gone to crap your video helped with some alternatives

I just got some round house double kneed duck canvas ones. I wish the right thigh pockets were wider, it's where I normally keep my wallet, there's no watch pocket which is were I usually keep my Zippo. And I with the straps where a bit longer. And a zipper top option would be nice.

The Carhartt flex bibs are extremely comfortable. I prefer them over the standard ones.

I believe roundhouse uses 14oz denim. The heaviest of the 4 and would also explain why they don’t have reinforced knees.

Are there any other bibs made in North America? I'm a large guy & was disappointed in Roundhouse for this review as I was about to order from them, now I'm holding off. Carhartt I'm not interested in.

I like the overalls with a zipper or flap, preferably a zipper so you don’t get a bunch of dust in your phone, or if you work over the water they are nice.

I like all things Duluth, but their overalls are not long enough for me. Carhartt has 36" inseam so that's what I wear. I too like the clip area on the carhartt pockets.
