I currently have this system, I started out with 1 sub and 2 ones, Than I traded out the ones for fives, about a week later to my surprise the MGR from the store called me and told me that he had a brand new gen 3 sub that was an opened box that he would sell me for $400, I flew down there and grabbed it, Well I have never yet heard a system wired or not that sounds as good as this, I cannot wait to get home each night and watch a movie with my kids. For anyone that wants the best, look no further, do it. You wont be disappointed, I also bought a new Sony 75 inch full array TV that supports Dolby Atmos, I am in heaven. I have had alot of people that know great systems over and so far everyone agrees that it is mind blowing.

Does the fact you have 2 fives throw the sound like making it sound as if you have 2 more sides? Like a Nakamichi 9.2.4? Does the duel Fives drown out the center channel ?

I'm a huge fan of Sonos. It replaced my downstairs Bose set-up matched with an 80" screen. Since then, I replaced my upstairs theater room with this set-up in white and dual subs and projector with 136" screen. I also have Sonos One S in most rooms and 4 placed outside around the house. I think you missed one very important feature...it's the eco system and ability to stream music to any Sonos system or speaker. Talk about yard day and house chores with music playing! You can share the DJ efforts with those you give access to to play their music playlist. The sound is incredible, and I always get asked what kind of speakers I have. You won't regret buying these.

I have the same setup, this setup puts a smile on my face every time I watch an action movie. I have a sub in the front and one underneath the bed when big explosions happen the way the bed trembles feels like I'm I the explosion myself. People don't know what they are missing till they can experience it. It might be a little overboard but when I go see a movie at the theater it doesn't excite me any more than it use to before I got this system.

Two more ones would be perfect to the front. Go with the new era 100’s though. You can’t pair them with the surround setup but only sync them. I have a Move in my kitchen so I’ll sync that with my set up now to increase sound in the kitchen. Definitely want to add one’s to the front though

I just replaced my Nakamichi 7.2.4 with the exact same set-up. Very noticeable improvement in sound quality and I was able to move the Fives back 10-12 feet away from the couch for a more immersive sound envelope. I had to put the Nakamichi rear surrounds 12-18 inches from the couch because I couldn't run the wires on the tile floor to move them back.

I have the Arc, 1 Sub Gen 3 and 2 Play 5s in the living room. In the bedroom I have a Beam Gen 2, 2 One SLs and a Sub-Mini. I like both set ups but the living room set up sounds amazing for both music and movies. Having both systems allows me to contrast the two in real time. I initially had the One SLs in the living room then decided to buy a second play 5 and pair it with the one I already owned and the difference was remarkable. I set the surrounds to full mode as opposed to ambient for music playback so that they’re on equal footing with the Arc and fully utilize their great sound stage.

I have updated my Sonos system (ARC+ 2 One-SL and 1 sub gen3) and added a second sub. The Sonos sub brings a great update to the whole listening experience. I did notice that the sub is somewhat directional. You always notice where the sub is in the room. By adding the second sub, this phenomenon has completely disappeared, and I experience a more homogeneous baseline.

So in setting up my Sub for my traditional 5.1 Setup in my living room that uses a receiver and a bunch of speakers, I learned that it’s best to configure the Sub where it blends in very well. You probably just need to dial it back a bit so it’s assisting with base but not dominating and drawing attention to itself. Placement could also be an issue. Sometimes just moving a Sub to a different location will solve that kind of problem to your specific listening position and the acoustics of your room. I find most people do the opposite and they crank that sub way up and want to feel the boom and bass and it can get ridiculous. But my tweaking and learning about how to setup a Sub was learned mainly for music listening. That sub should be balanced with the other speakers otherwise it’s just thumpy and overbearing and ruins enjoyment of a good mix. I also went with a non ported sub that lends itself better to music where the boomier ported subs are for that deep cinematic bass.

You are looking @ $8500 for the Definitive Tech setup you describe. If you want it to play well with SONOS in the other parts of the house you're going to need to add a Port for another $500. Bringing your total to $9K. Your setup might sound a bit better - no doubt - but not $6K better!. Not to mention that the SONOS system can be setup in minutes and can be upgraded in the future. Sonos FTW.

I tried the same set up, minus the 2nd Sub. For Tv you can’t beat it. For music, I did not like the main music coming from the rear of the room. So… I went with the following setup… Arc with Sub and SL1’s in the rear. I then added the 2 - 5’s as a left and right front speaker that only gets paired (Turned on) when I listen to music. In this setup I get surround sound for TV and a rear channel for music with the louder sound coming from the front of the room. Sounds amazing!!!

The fact that this sound system is "modular" is why I bought it. I have the ARC soundbar, two Gen 3 subs, and 2 1SLs for the rears in my living room. Then I have a 5 in the bathroom and a Move in the kitchen. To have a home theater/whole home audio system all in one makes the price justified!!!

Sure, it’s not quite as good in all situations, but for watching most movies, it’s pretty darn close. I don’t have clutter everywhere now. The only thing I would have considered differently is in-wall speakers, but didn’t know how long I would stay in the house for. At least with the Arc, I could take it all with me when I move again. Bose is ultimately louder, deeper and clearer when playing music. But everyone is talking about how sonos is better with movies but I still haven't seen the difference. Edit: I came back to apologize to sonos, because I found out that my audio was compressed due to some settings. I can't believe the sound this crazy thing produces when watching movies, but I still think bose sounds better with music

Superb video Jonah, you really give us a great insight into your experience, thanks you. I have the arc, sub gen 2 and 2 one SL’s in my lounge. But i am vert tempted to get two 5’s. I do have a 5 in my kitchen which i absolutely love. So getting two further 5’s would be an awesome system. Thanks again. I look forward to seeing your next video.

If you were to buy 2 additional fives and put them at the front of of the sound stage on either side of the tv and group them to your ARC room it might even out. The ARC really is lacking as a standalone front left centre and right speaker. I wish Sonos would give us the option of a true 5.2.2 setup with the soundbar acting as a centre, without having to group multiple rooms, but it does work. I actually have 16 sonos components all grouped together to watch tv and it sounds amazing.

It is hard not to get sucked down the rabbit hole once you start: one Arc, two Gen 1 Beams, four Symfonisk bookshelf speakers, four Gen 3 subs, two Fives, two One SL, and two Roams.

The 5s are overkill, especially in your setup. Your speaker placement is really hampering any chance of giving you a good surround sound.

My Sonos system for TV watching is more typical ... Sonos Arc with 1 sub and a pair of Ones for rears. HOWEVER, I have an additional pair of Fives AND Ones that are forward-facing, next to the Arc, for MUSIC listening, and OMG, so great! I am tempted to add a 2nd sub just because. ;-)

I have this setup and I absolutely love it. I just wish Sonos would add full DTS support, I’d even pay extra to cover the licensing cost if necessary just to have that capability when playing 4K Blu-rays. Most new 4K Blu-rays are coming with Dolby Atmos audio tracks but I’d say more than half of the slightly older 4K Blu-rays have some form of DTS audio whether it’s DTS:X or DTS Master audio. It’s kinda insane not to have full DTS support on a system that costs over $3,000. I’m aware of the upcoming DTS support update but that doesn’t support DTS’s higher quality lossless audio tracks that are used on 4K Blu-rays so there isn’t much of a point to it in my opinion. I’m also aware that you can run LPCM but for whatever reason, that doesn’t sound as good to me; idk if that’s a placebo effect or not. Any thoughts would be appreciated. 😎

This is actually a very good example of what I was talking about in my comment above, but there are many others as well. Generally speaking, you can get much better results and get far more bang-for-your-buck with other competing products from other manufacturers out there today. This is something that far too many people unfortunately overlook before making their purchases. It pays to really dig in and do your homework first before making a purchase!

I removed an aging basic DVD surround sound system and whilst looking for a replacement a friend offered by a Creative Inspire T7900 7:1 speaker system for free, who said if the turned it up too much it was too loud. As I still had all the wiring in place I fitted this system, the sound when not turned up is a whole lot better than the tiny tinny sound of the TV speakers, I have played some studio quality music from a friend through it and you can hear the fret noise as he changes to a different note with great clarity, that I have never heard before, I think having a good sound source is half the battle with good quality audio. My cat is uncertain about it, after I played the latest TOP GUN trailer, as it ducked down with it's fur stood up wondering just what the hell just happened.

Having almost exactly this setup (minus 1 sub) I can’t agree with your conclusion. The cost of this system, the functionality of this system is WAY beyond what a similarly priced ‘traditional’ system could offer. You’d be spending twice the price to get something better. My 2 cents.

Dear Jonah, thank you very much for the fantastic review. As your experience with soundbars, do you recommend Sonos set system Arc, 3 Subs, and Pair of Sonos Five or Sony HT-A7000 with Sub SA-SW5 and Sony surround speakers? In general as loud speakers and great Dolby Atmos and sound quality, which one do you recommend? Thank you very much and always keep it up!

I'm building a house and planning on going with ARC (front) + Five's (back) and 1 or two subs. I will be mounting the 5's high on a wall behind the listening position on the couch. Should I run ethernet to hard-wire the Five's or should I count on a full WIFI setup?
@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't hurt to have the ethernet cable as a back-up and added flexibility for the future. Wi-fi enabled devices a few years ago was mostly with smartphone or laptops and now everything has wi-fi ability like kitchen appliances, clocks, air purifiers, robot vacuums, watches, TVs, etc... I have the Arc, 2 subs, 2 Fives on my wi-fi and it sounds fantastic. Another option is just put the Arc on ethernet and the Sonos system should create its own secure wi-fi network separate from the rest of the house.

Actually, 2 x Sub Gen 3 + Sonos ARC + 2 x ERA 300 its the best home cinema setup with Sonos products. Yes, 2 x Sonos Five in surround position are good (I have 4 of them) but in my opinion they are better in music mode. Enjoy the sound quality everyone!🙋‍♂
