The Artist doesn't want you selling said card, so they personalize it. Receiving end wipes the personalization off for resale means essentially altering the card just to keep the signature. They then go and get it graded to make even more money. It's highly frowned upon and scummy af. I'm sure the grading companies say something in their T.O.S. against it@@tylertitus5790

Not Pokémon related but this type of crap is the same reason why Frank Oz no longer signs Yoda/Star Wars stuff. I would love nothing more than a personalized autograph from him on a piece of memorabilia I cherish. Im not for or against selling your autographed stuff, but if the artist requests you not to sell or personalizes it for that reason you better damn well respect them and their wishes. It’s even to the point now where it’s difficult to even go to a local minor league baseball and get autographs because guys have their kids going up asking for autos left and right to sell on eBay while they hide behind a garbage can watching.

I went to a con in Indianapolis this past weekend and had a Zeno DBS card signed by the voice actor, I went to the JSA booth to get the signature authenticated for $10 and they wanted to put a sticker ON THE CARD, not on the sleeve, not on the toploader with a tamperproof sticker.. fingers crossed PSA will authenticate it because I want it slabbed for display

A creator's wishes have no bearing on what the recipient does or doesn't do with the product after it's left their hands. It's _the market_ that decides the value of the piece. Don't get me wrong, leveraging an artist's friendship to make profit is a scumbag move regardless, but there is no contract or official documentation that says the person who receives a signed item from someone is under penalty if they choose to resell it. The onus falls on the creator to choose whether or not to sign stuff in the first place, and some (like Harrison Ford, Paul McCartney and others) largely opted out of the practice for years because they were sick of being hounded by autograph seekers. The MTG community has had artists signing cards for nearly three decades, and you rarely hear a peep out of anyone because it's been going on for so long and some collectors appreciate having an autograph from a deceased artist (Chris Rush, for example). I hate to be that guy, but it's shockingly ignorant of a creator to tell the market/collectors not to resell his stuff, particularly knowing how scarce a signer he generally is, and it's just as ignorant of the fanbase to get angry when someone takes an object they own and resell it. Collecting isn't an exercise in pure communism - if it were, there would be no such thing as a collector's market to begin with.

The artists should really sign the name in Large letters first, and then write the personal message and signature OVER the personalization name, this would put that to rest as it would not allow you to alter the personalization without distroying the messge. As a vintage magic collector I fully disagree with your view on selling signed cards. Removal of the altering and personalized portions is completely unacceptable, as is the violent behavior, but the general stance that selling cards that are signed is wrong isn’t that powerful to me, no matter what the artist’s wishes are, at the end of the day it is your property and you can do whatever you want with it. However, the Magic community is MUCH different than Pokemon. We often pay the artist for signatures or artist proofs of cards, and the market for signed cards has evolved very differently over the years between the two games.

If theres a market for it, people will buy it, and people will sell it. There is no law saying you cant alter your own cards after someone signs them. Sure the artist might not like it...but its not their property they have no legal or ethical right to tell someone what they do with their property. When you buy a car and put a wrap on it, the person who put on the wrap might not like the fact that you remove a portion of the wrap and sell the car. If anything the Artist doesn't even own the card artwork, the artwork itself is most likely owned and copywrited by the pokemon company, But once I purchase the product; it is now my legal property. No one has the right to force me to treat that property in any particular way. Sure you can disagree with the treatment of my property but this person is under no legal or moral obligation to treat their property in a way that you agree with. If anything this person is just disrespecting the artist wishes, and while disrespect might not get you invited to the party in the future; you don't have to abide by how others think you ought to treat your property. And I don't think people who want these signatures and pay for them, really care if someones personalized msg was taken off of the card. If they did they would try and get their own card signed with their own personalized msg. @@ezeqeel8352 it’s actually VERY simple if you think in more than a black and white way. There’s scales of “wrong”. Kicking someone’s dog is worth raising awareness of behavior. Stealing is worth raising alarms. Wiping personalization off your card when you sell it is some soft ass issue to whine about and make a fuss. It’s an absurdly small “you’re doing wrong” that ultimately doesn’t have a harmful consequence. It’s embarrassing to see people not understand these simple concepts.

If the card is what the person whos buys the "altered card" gets the card they wanted hats the issue? seems it would be worth less for wiping the name of the artist off.... if the person buying gets what they want and the person is selling THEIR property who the heck cares? oh well someone didnt want them to be sold when they cant stop it and are just butthurt... lord yall are actin like hes counter fitting... how is it fraud i dont get it...fraud is when a signature is forged. maybe im missing something but just because someone doesnt want you to sell something that belongs to you, doesnt mean they cant... this comes no where near to unethical buisness practices that literally every company yall buy products from are doing including pokemon..

This person sold HIS property and did no harm to anyone... he wasnt even using the signature as a sell point which is what the artist doesnt want... and they have no say what someone does with their shit even if they were sold still signed. yall just tormented and ruined somones life over literally nothing.. all i can say it karma is a bitch

Really reaching man. theres actual issues with victims you should be focusing on cancelling and ruining their life. I dont get it... did he get the cards for free from the artist ? if so it would only be unethical if he was selling fake signatures.Wouldnt taking the signature off just retuen the card to normal and worth less than with the signature ? you really feel to strong and are getting to butthurt over nothing. No ones getting hurt or scammed... yall really that mad at someone for selling their own stuff just because someone doesnt want them to sell THEIR stuff. if the card is still a 10 after wiping it, than its a 10 ? i dont fucking get it man, youre way too worked up over nothing.

Honestly he's not wrong. He's an ass but... he paid and the grading should say altered... if it does. It's on the buyer
