Does anyone have advice on outboard maintenance? Such as when to do an oil change? When to replace the impeller? Etc...

You don’t have to winterize an outboard just make sure all of your fluids are changed about once a season your for the impeller water is coming out very slowly or dripping out it’s then time to change it
@mathewgrinnell7392
@mathewgrinnell7392 3 жыл бұрын
change fluids in winter and the prop doesn't need replaced unless the blade chips or breaks off entirely because a broken prop throws the engine off balance. basically the outboard maintenance is simple.

Years ago we had pontoon boats,gradually going up in size every summer! My husband would go to auto part yards and get the gas tanks off of trucks and install them on the back. We could run a long time on that big tank! Pontoon boats are the greatest fun.

Not sure if your is like my brother-in-law but he has a 75hp on his bass boat and we learned the 75hp, 90hp and 115hp were all the same motor with the difference being the carburetors sizes, spark plugs and the prop size on the lower. Found were people put the 90hp carb’s on a 75hp and a 115hp prop making it go much faster. Might be fun to play with. His is a Mercury outboard. I did a 80hp lower on a 40hp Johnson on my bass boat it was like a 1986?¿? if I remember correctly. Awesome build really enjoying it too.

Sometimes it is a restrictor plate between carb and intake. Not sure on this motor but I've seen it first hand as my 25 Nissan had one. Made it a 30hp with zero cost.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing for my boat. It’s an inboard outboard 4.3 liter mercruiser alpha 1 drive set up. It’s rated at 175 hp but I was thinking since other 4.3 mercruisers can get up to 220 hp that we may be able to do something similar with the carbs. The engine is literally almost identical to the 220hps ones as well. The engine is in a mint 1989 wellcraft eclipse 186. Idk if it’s possible on inboards like that might take a look into it.
@fryreartechnology7611
@fryreartechnology7611 3 жыл бұрын
@@nikolutkauskas5126 sounds do-able to me. Might even be able to 'eBay' turbo it too it there is enough room for the water to water intercooler, turbo, all that good stuff. The 4.3L block has the same mounts and bolt pattern as a 5.0/5.7L (305/350ci) V8. I had a S-10 truck I swapped a V8 in too and biggest upgrade was the cooling system. Might be worth looking in to a swap that make more power with the same fuel since it is like $4 per gallon on the water where I live. That's a really nice boat you have too.

I rebuilt a 1973 Lund with a 115hp Johnson outboard a few years back. Learned a LOT from Dangar Marine here on KZbin. His outboard videos and general boat maintenance and modification are very informative. He lives on an island and they all use boats to commute. Hope this helps! Congrats on the boat and great work!

You'll probably love the four stroke engine. Since your dad already had or has a boat, you probably already know the importance in winterizing the engine if it's going to set unused for a while. In my area it's $1K every time those things go into the shop. It didn't take very many trips to the shop and I learn how to fix an engine real quick. Keeping gas in good condition will go a LONG way. I didn't even know you could paint the plastic outboard cover panels and make them look factory. Freaking rocking job on that. I would have been very tempted to have gone white, but I'm different. Water pump on that four stroke looks good and strong.

I work for a marine dealer service center and we only do Mercury. Mercury recommends every 2/3years for the water pump depending who you ask. Oil change/lower unit is 100hrs or once a year, whichever comes first. Was the pontoon transom originally rated to be able to hold a 75 hp engine? Your coast guard plate that should be on the original railing should have that plate and it should be moved to the new stuff. You should have looked for Mercury Phantom Black. That’s what Mercury uses.

You gotta do something about that fuel tank. Everything else about the boat looks so intentional and well executed. Maybe some kind of cover with mounts on top to secure a cooler. Or even just a cover that matches the boat.You were right to stay away from the red pinstripe on the motor because it wouldn't match. Now look at that fuel tank... Beautiful job on the boat. You've done an outstanding job rehabbing your Pontoon Boat young man. A pro boat yard would have a hard time topping your work even tho there's a few things you could do to finish it off. You should put nylon washers under your stainless steel engine mounting bolts and and nuts to avoid dissimilar metal corrosion.

I That fin is a skeg and it's main purpose is to act as a sacrificial part of the engine to dissipate corrosion that would eat up the metal on the rest of the metal of the engine. Especially in salt water. In Florida if your taking your toon into salt water you need a salt water rated engine or it won't last very long. You also need to wrap your under deck wiring in flex seal or another salt water rated coating or it won't last long. Even if it's marine rated wiring I'd cover it. Plus put several coats of marine grade clear coat on all metal objects below your deck. The very bottom black area anti-fouling paint. Even if you trailer it it'll save you a lotta money and time if you do all that. It's near impossible to get all the salt off a toon with just a rinse. Even if you use a pressure washer.
