I always took these displays of power and speed as merely relative. Like how the Tournament of Power progressed 82 seconds per 20 minute episode, or like how Frieza's 5 minute Namek estimate lasted a dozen episodes. This has been a theory that’s been a round for years. Not just with DBZ but with Anime in general. It’s like Sonic in the Sonic the hedgehog movie. Faster he goes the slower time dilates. In physics this makes sense if anime characters are moving 60+ bits per second. That’s the speed which a normal human brain processes stuff. I did however take a look at him going Ultra Instinct, because a pianist that I watched played the song and I needed to see if the scene lived up to what I was hearing. Anyway, Goku won't let the ones he love died but he doesn't care about saving the world, unless it lines up with fighting a very strong opponent. He did this with Frieza, giving him energy because he wanted to fight him again, though he wasn't much of threat, it was still something he shouldn't have gambled with. I can't remember which enemy it was but he had a chance to wish him gone for ever but didn't because he wanted to fight him. I'm just saying he is not a hero, he is a Saiyan warrior that lives to fight strong opponents.

He was rarely ever serious. Rewatch Z and I promise you you’ll realize how idiotic he’s always been. Nostalgia is confusing you HARD. besides, the ‘serous’ moments he has in Z tend to be the Americanized version of him rather than what his character was truly meant to be. It also doesn’t help that they slowly introduced more options to take away all the stakes in DBZ. Between all the various versions and rules of the dragonballs, random witches being able to bring people back from otherworld (even if just temporary), communication from otherworld, the fact that they’re still very much ‘alive’ in otherworld just not around their people, sensu beans, healing chambers. Then Super introduced more dragonballs and Whis’s ability and willingness to reverse time to save the Earth… the list goes on. Why would goku take anything serious if all of it can be undone in so many different ways lol. He doesn’t have to fight to save the lives of his people anymore. But… that’s just what we’ve seen so far. There hasn’t been an actual threat to Earth during the entirety of Super until the ToP. And we’ve seen Goku get serious fighting Jiren when his friends almost died because of him. And he gets serious in the Manga against the universal threats they face. He also gets serious in the Broly movie. See, if you use your brain a little bit, you’d realize that Goku didn’t even take anything seriously after the Frieza saga when he learned that there are even more ways to bring people back. In fact, you can probably attribute his SSJ ascension towards his mix of a carefree attitude and eagerness to fight. He realizes his strength is only just beginning and anyone stronger than him is just a way to push him further. He didn’t take Cell very seriously or else he wouldn’t have given him a Sensu. He literally wasted his time with Fat Buu to show off his power and test it. Your precious ‘old goku’ barely exists in the form you think you remember him in.

The earliest glimpse of ultra instinct was when Goku fought mr. Popo's Goku doll on Kami's lookout in DragonBall when he was a kid. Goku emptied his mind, closed his eyes, dodged it's attack and countered. He told Popo that his body just "moved naturally". This fight with the ginyu force was not an instance of ui, it was just pure speed after all that training in 100x earth's gravity. At least, I'm pretty sure. If I'm wrong please correct me with evidence from the manga or anime. 😅

However, the anime has always glossed over this because they showed Goku's red Kaio-Ken aura a lot while fighting Freeza. In dbz they always show emphasis on the power of a focused character by showing use the perception of the weaker already present enemy. This creates a sense of scale. He was so much faster than the ginyu goons that to them this is what he looked like. Compared to freiza though he didn't seem this fast. If they scaled his speed always to the average human who was viewing this, trying to compare his speed with our eyes would be like comparing bullets from sniper rifles with the naked eye. We wouldn't know which is faster. But if we had the view of Jace, who is for example faster than 1 of the sniper bullets but not faster than the other, we see a comparison that truly exaggerates the massive speed difference that otherwise we wouldn't see. Same with strength. When DBZ wants to show a character is very fortified and strong, they make them take a punch to the face without flinching. When goku hit Jiren and jiren didn't flinch, it wasn't because goku hit him with a weaker hit than the punch he used to make frieza double over. He hit with way more force, but this allowed us to show how jiren was so much stronger. They do this to give us a sense of scale. It's not that goku was using ultra instinct in any early stage, he was just that much faster than the ginyu force goons.

Right, in ui sign he needs to think about attacking, but attacking it's something completely different than dodge (like ultra ego, vegeta needs to think only in distruction and goku needs to leave blank mind). A proof that goku never used a part of ui is when Roshi and Whis explains it to Goku, cause he never used it. Goku used the ui principle when he fought with Granola in SSG, he used it in base form too, but not in DBZ. This scene is like when he fought with Ten Shin Han and Goku was just so fast. Like "quicksilver/flash" effect. It's just speed.

What if you unlock UI in early age yet you don’t have enough access to use remaining techniques, battle instincts or training under meditation? You’ll end up losing easily. Goku mastered that before he unlocks ultra instinct. He leveled up the Stages of Ultra Instinct in the Tournament of Power because he’s already mastered Flow State or Ultra Instinct before. Beerus can’t mastered the Mastered Ultra Instinct because he never fought the opponent who’s higher than him many times.

I'm glad they added in Ultra Instinct as a powerup, because its literally the very essence of OG Dragonball which is Martial Arts, not God ki or God powerups but the capability of Martial Arts when turned up a notch.
