This may sound dumb but i got tired of trying to catch draining fluids just for it to run sideways and dump on the floor anyway so i bought a concrete mix tub and i wish i did so a long time ago. Some sit as low as a drain pan but holds way more. Great for tight quarters and lots of drips and drains. Slide it under, do what needs done, brake clean everything down into tub, catch damn near everything

Ten speed automatic transmission seems so un-necessary, more "Planned Obsolescence". Ford must have pulled those engineers over from NASA, think the Space Suttles ran 10 speed transmissions? Ford should contract Fuller to manufacture a baby 10 speed manual trans for those work trucks that will run well over a million miles without service. America's future is screwed; to smart, to fast.

@@Nobody-ld7mk I have a 2002 Silverado with the super-reliable 4.6 engine and a 4 speed automatic transmission. I paid only $15k for it new. On a lark I checked to see what a baseline Silverado goes for now, about $45k. It now has a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine and an 8 speed automatic. I blame the federal government's ridiculous mileage requirements. I'll just keep driving my 22 year old truck. All I've replaced so far are a water pump and an alternator. I've priced rebuilt engines and transmissions, and I'll go that route if they ever fail. But I do fear that the government will ban rebuilding old vehicles, just as they've done to older engines for over the road trucks.

I worked for the National Park Service in the equipment shop for 34 years. My division supervisor told me they had a boat load of money to spend and asked what I needed for the shop. I told him I would like a trans fluid ex-changer, a brake fluid flusher and a coolant ex-changer and explained how it would increase the life of our vehicles by changing fluids at prescribed intervals. Six months later I got an oil filter squisher. Go figure.

I can see the advantage of a flush, in that it replaces the fluid in the converter. But also not changing the filter, is like not changing your engine oil filter when doing a oil change. The filter is designed to last the life of the fluid, and then be changed. If you want to be really thorough on it we should probably do a filter and a fluid flush! Ray you did this one right!

A drain plug on the pan would only partially drain the ATF. The torque converter, cooler,.etc. would all still be full of the old stuff. If Ray was correct, he got 9 quarts out of the pan (it may hold 10, allowing for spillage) and he thought it was a 28 quart system... so a drain plug would leave almost 2/3 of the old ATF.

My AFSC (AF Specialty Code) was 47252 - General Purpose Vehicle Mechanic. If it was painted AF Strata Blue and had wheels, I fixed it. We had some 400+ GPV's running around the base and missile complex. The shop could hold about 30 vehicles inside at one time. There were NO (zero lifts) and only 2 pits. All repair work and most service work was done at floor level or on jack stands. Not only was everything caked in snow and ice when it came in the shop, but cold outside air came rushing in along the floor every time an overhead door went up. Winters (generally) lasted from October to April and were miserable in the shop.

Watching on 55” tv with built in KZbin app. Drives a Saab, has a spare Saab in the garage so there can always be a Saab to drive. The previous Saab died at 270,000 miles.

B&M makes a trans pan for a 6R140 pan. Not sure if this is the same for the 10 speed but it has a drain bolt for less mess! I have a 2020 Chev Silverado with the 5.3 and 8L90E trans. Had a muffler shop lower the pipe at a cost of $100, installed a B&M dip stick, and bought a factory drain pan to which I welded a drain bolt assembly. I need to make a You tube for this service/materials.

B&M has been around forever and a day, their products have always been top quality. I installed one of their drain plugs and Transpak kits in my '69 Cougar's FMX trans when I was 17 (another lifetime ago) and was thrilled with the results -- great bang for the buck. 😎

I replaced the ULV motorcraft fluid in my F150 10R80 with Amsoil LV Signature Series fluid and my Trans fluid temp dropped 10 degrees and shifts much better. Especially during the skip shifts. No issues at all in the 21,000 miles since. Plan to change it again in another 9,000 miles.

You should start using a pump to remove the fluid from the transmission when removing the pan. By using an “ inboard oil change pump” you can remove 90% of the fluid before removing pan. Fluid can be removed through the dipstick tube or hole where dipstick would be.

Ray, you are the man, the man who can! I have been noticing for a while the word 'dually' I am from the UK and when I pronounce it the English way it just sounds WRONGGG! Sort of Jewalee or jewally, US version (better) dooalee, I like very muchlee. Love the content, I watch all your vids and am so impressed that you post every day, sometimes more than once! Been working on my '05 Mecedes CLK350 with approximately 75391 miles, for what seems like an age. I think when I started dinosaurs were still a thing! Anyhoo, got to do the trans, (automatic gearbox UK), will probably be using the magnetic drain plug removal tool, that I bought as I saw you using one, you remember, you just used it to undo the last few threads? A few of the other jobs I have done in the last seven months of ownership; Wished I had a garage, A LOT as I have to work in the street! Sorted out 'machine gunning', (where the door locks would rapidly lock and unlock when you locked the car with the fob)which happened just after I bought the car. The stealership said it needed two actuator modules which they fitted, I found out it was the springs in the actuators which had snapped, so when I got it back after five weeks, I asked for the old units and fixed them! Oil change, pumped out through dipstick tube. Cavity waxed and undersealed with lanolin-based wax Power steering pump, twice, as the first one I got failed after 10 miles, I also changed the variable speed unit that changes the stiffness at low speeds. Serpentine belt, three times before I noticed the tensioner was out of alignment. Changed as many bulbs as possible to LED (got twin HID headlamps as standard, so no need there) Changed tyres, tires, as originals were suffering dry rot. Spark plugs fitted, Bosch double platinum x 6 Inner and outer tie rods, droplinks, shocks and wheel bearings. Rotors, or discs as we call 'em. Top strut bearings. Backplates for front rotors. Bled the brakes. Recolo(u)red the seats, to Ivory, from beige. Put in Android HU, with wireless CarPlay as standard Merc unit was ancient! Fitted cheap Chinesium HUD, the missus keeps reminding me when I'm speeding, so unfitted! Had wheels sprayed, got it done cheap, and it's chipping, The Guy is going to fix it but may end up doing it myself, I have a compressor. Changed the gas struts for the boot/bonnet. To-do list: Diff oil, trans fluid (flush) with newer larger capacity sump, as above. Oh yeah, drive the bloody thing! Keep on keeping on Ray😃

With racking so many haul miles and lots of fluid changes, it's time for the owner to install a pan with integral bung, just like a oil pan has. That's so he can do it more often with much less aggravation. You don't have to change all the fluid in the tranny, just what's in the pan, which might half of it. The worn stuff can just be augmented with the new additives and base oil to bring fluid performance back up to spec. It's not like it's full of dirt or anything. And you don't have to change the filter all the time either - it's not like engine oil. The filter is mostly a safety mechanism to catch the small amounts of metal shavings occurring through wear, which isn't very much.

Hey ray when youre dealing with these transmissions, use a transfer pump in the fill port and you can get like 80% of the fluid out without issue. Makes the pan a lot easier to get off

Fluid level needs to be checked with transmission temp verified at 195 to 215 degrees. If you filled it to the fill hole below that temp it's overfilled, and will aerate and vent when it gets hot pulling a load.

I have never flushed out a transmission like that. I have changed filters and whatever fluid dropped out before. I recently had a torque converter swapped out during a motor swap, and the mechanic said that he flushed the transmission like that and changed my filters again during the process. My truck had 246k miles on it when the timing chain tensioner decided to break and destroyed my 5.7 hemi in my 2005 dodge ram 1500. That's what initiated the engine swap. I got a rebuild from Jasper with a 100k mile warranty, and I told the mechanic to go ahead and put in a new torque converter and new front seal on the transmission while he had it apart.

Thanks a bunch for letting me look over your shoulder.

I had another shop bring me a 2020 transit 350 and a different shop put motor on a d it never ran right afterwards. Found it didn't want to back up. Got it in the shop and found cracked intercooler. Likely the original problem that ruined the engine on first place. Put the new intercooler on and it ran good but still had exhaust leak. Also it would not move in reverse. Found that transmission was 3 quarts low. Middle shop had pushed it with another truck 15 miles to my shop. Makes ya wonder what first shop was thinking putting engine on first place. They couldn't find a boost leak and never checked trans fluid after having trans cooler removed. Not all mechanics are the same. If ya find a good one then don't piss them off.

Getting hit with High beams is bad even when you have young eyes that adjust rapidly but old people really have a bad time. I've heard there are a few old folks in Florida. I just realized something being an old fart, before I got my cataracts fixed, I could not see at night without my high beams on so I didn't drive at night if at all possible.

Yep the melty Frozen road encrusted snow and Ice... A nice chunk of that fell straight down the back of my Monkey suit at the tender age of 16 in Vocational Auto while under some 70's vehicle on a rack in Mid-January. Much to my irritation and my classmates delight I danced around until I stripped it off and got the offending cold wet mixture out of it. I chose right then and there to continue turning wrenches but not in that environment. After seeing the Bs you have been through in dealerships and other repair shops it only makes me feel correct in my decision. Your hard work, perseverance and financial management allowed you to rise above all of that and begin building what I see as a viable growing business which will continue to grow and prosper. Additionally give the opportunity to other worthy mechanics to continue to grow in the right atmosphere. To the day @ almost 61 I will get on my back under my vehicles and do repairs, oil changes Etc. It's in our blood. Much respect to you and all of the others who go out there day after day, ferret out the issues mechanical and electrical and correct them and get vehicles and machinery up and running again. We are what keeps this country going👊

Ray, as many long wheelbase vehicles as you have had in the shop, maybe it is time to consider a four-post lift, so you can lift a long wheelbase vehicle securely, so you can do these types of services without being on a creeper. At the very least, find out if there is some way to add some additional space for a long-base alignment rack, so you could, in theory, do the current job using that type of rack.
