Thanks for sharing! The first thing that came to my mind to make the pump be *MUCH* quieter is to firmly attach a container filled with loose lead shot to the pump itself, then isolate the pump + weight from the structure of the van with foam cushion/very flexible fuel line/etc. That will *DRASTICALLY* reduce vibrations being amplified. Another route is to pick up one of these actual silent pumps that a fellow in the UK makes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foC5h6KBg5qmo9U (Email to contact the maker in the description.) Cheers!

I know it's not recommended, but my solution has worked for the last 3 years and I can barely hear the pump. It is just to replace that stiff fuel line with model aircraft silicone rubber tubing all the way up to the short back hose that comes with the pump. The pump is suspended with silicon fuel line rubber as well. Once my enclosure is replaced it's peace no ticking. My fuel run is 2 meters. Keep up the good work.👍👍

Hi Mel, it is a tad quieter, but I wouldn't say 'ultra' quiet and certainly not £30 quieter. Although the ticking didn't bother me too much in my T4, I experimented with sound insulation. The best method I found is to build a box out of 20mm softwood big enough for the pump to fit in and pack it loosely with that cheap foam flooring underlay. Then I hung the box with rubber cords scavenged from an old bungee. By the way, your lighting is much better.

The ticking sound is being transmitted via longitudinal waves along those hard plastic Diesel tubes/hoses. If you want to avoid this you need to build a loop at input and output and hang the pump loosley together with those loops so it can swing freely.

Wrap bubble wrap around the pump, put the wrapped pump in a box and fill the box with expanding foam. Then fix the box to the wall with screws going through rubber grommets. If the pump ever needs changing you can just pull of the foam off and the pump will still be clean inside the bubble wrap.

@jonathandickson5055 Жыл бұрын
Definitely quieter. For those interested in quieting the motor by boxing it in remember density is what deadens sound. A metal or plasterboard box will deaden the sound far more than any kind if foam or fibre. Pvc is surprisingly good too, and of course suspend rather than fix to any solid surface.

In a similar vain, 2 of mine are in short pieces of lead waste pipe, with a heavy white fiberglass(i think) insulation stuffed in the ends, and suspended from rubber hangers, which dropped the noise level a fair bit. Another system has a pump that was claimed to be quieter, bought from heatport(new zealand) called a type E (22mls/SKU: HP-10788 Brand: HEATPORT), which makes a similar difference to the one shown here, so thinking i will try a lead case on it next as well. Mel I would mount your pump vertically. They make air and mounted the way you have it lets air build up in corner of pump = noise. They say mount like you have yours, but you cannot mount vertically on vehicle frame if you wanted to that's why they say mount at angle. I have my pump mounted vertically from four springs in a channel made of wood. it just sits there jiggling around and very quiet. Air cannot get trapped and increase noise. Plus, its completely lubricated at all times no dry areas for piston to wear out. You have room to mount vertically. Cheers Ed

@Ellie_Melloy2 жыл бұрын
I don't notice much difference in your volume, the new one sounds higher pitch and the old one has more thud. I think since you've mounted yours inside the van, you'll make it much quieter by wrapping the pump in a towel or microfibre cloth and suspending it from bungee cords. I have exactly the same brand heater as you. It sounded the same when it started up and I got inconsistent performance because it's under my van and I couldn't avoid having some sections of pipe travelling downward from the pump like yours. It was the air bubbles caused by the diameter of that pipe, and changed it for 2mm ID nylon tube which gets no air bubbles even when fuel is travelling downward. I think the smaller internal diameter makes the fuel delivery more precise.

Have you considered putting the pump underneath the van that should eradicate the noise
@driveandsurvive Жыл бұрын
Nice work and good to see you got a result. If possible, I recommend placing the fuel metering pump outside the van - on the underside close to the fuel tank. And as Johannes said, it's also about hard surfaces transferring the noise of the magnetically charged piston action. That equates to the rubber mount you have in place for the pump and additionally, soft mounting the hard fuel line leading from the pump to the heater injector. This hard fuel line cannot be substituted for a soft line on the discharge side of the pump, as its hardness maintains the pump pressure - so your stuck with that. On the safety side of things, I'd also recommend not placing the heater in a location that obscures direct access to, or sight of the unit (often caused by attempts to isolate the noise of the fuel pump by enclosing the unit) and have a serviceable fire extinguisher within the van at all times. Thanks for the good work and keep them coming.

All good ideas! Could you wrap the pump in the same rubber/foil baking the pump lies against to make it even quieter?

Hi I’ve not looked at all the comments. I’ve used this pump for a year now, yes it is quieter than the normal ones, however you can make them even quieter by putting a rubber elbow joining pipe on both ends of the pump instead of the straight. This is advice from Eberspacher

another idea worth considering or not ,GET A SEALABLE FOOD BAG ,"YOU WILL NEED SOME DECENT TAPE AS WELL " POOR IN SOME PVA GLUE ,BECAUSE WHEN IT DRYS ITS A BIT LIKE RUBBER, SEAL THE ENDS AND WRAP AROUND THE PUMP , in the bag it may stay in a more liquid form ,so may act as bit of a sound deadening barrier , the idea maybe crap ,but its just a thought

I bought a true silent pump from a guy in the UK who designed and makes them himself , not cheap but well worth the money if you want silence !

I've seen them and they do look good but TBH I'd just fit the pump outside where they were designed to be fitted and save the money 🤔 If you HAVE to fit one inside like on a boat i use an insulated box to house the pump but those silent pumps are great if your stuck with mounting inside and can't insulate 👍

It seems that the sound level from both is pretty much the same, just that the new one makes a more high pitched sound than the regular pump. The higher pitch may also result in less vibrations being transmitted through the wall, pipes etc. I think the best is to install those pumps on the outside and in such case getting the "ultra quiet" won't be worth it.

I bought the silent pump from james and it was 100% silent (it was heaven) for £99 but it lasted less then 3 months so now back on the van banger.☹
