This is a crude demonstration of a concept for using electromagnetic skis instead of wheels to safely land Urban Air Mobility STOL aircraft on short metallic runways. This UMX Ultrix is using permanent magnets as a tail skis to land on a 25 ft. long by 3 ft. wide by 0.012 in. thick galvanized steel runway. For full scale, the goal is not rapid deceleration, but to maintain undeniable control over the aircraft from the moment when the skis touch the landing deck. This will allow safe operations, even in strong winds.
