I umpire myself. The mechanics would be if the ball went down the line by the 3rd Baseman, the HP Umpire would've come up to 3rd Base, once R1 committed to 3rd Base, the 1B Umpire would've have come to Home Plate for any plays there. But he should be doing this in foul territory. There is no reason why I can see that he was coming into the infield in a 3 umpire system and this scenario.

He though the ball got through and was going to cover home as the plate umpire would move to third. He never looks at the ball his eyes are toward home, he never sees the ball and is surprised when he got hit. With either a 2- or 4- man crew that wouldn't happen.

That certainly seems like the appropriate story here…but with that in mind, would it make sense to rotate ump at 2nd to third and have 1st to 2nd? Idk, I just feel like with a runner on 2nd and a ball hit down the line, you can likely expect a throw home, and since that is very consequential, you’d want to keep that umpire there

We all make mistakes. From the video, it is obvious that the umpire thought that the ball went through. He simply got ahead of himself. The rule is that you allow the ball to take you to the play. He skipped that step. What is worse is that, had he not been hit by the ball, he would have been totally out of position to make the call at first base. BTW, 30 years as an umpire.

Need to understand umpire rotation to figure this out. He thought the ball got past the 3B, so in his mind, a potential double down the line. He moves from position A in foul territory behind 1st to fair territory behind first, thinks he sees the ball get through the infield and now he needs to get home because the HPU should be going to 3rd to cover, and his job is to cover home. Now, as for his reaction, his reaction is fine because the ball is still live and in play, yea, he screwed up, we all do as umpires from time to time, but all he can do is continue to work the play. I can tell you from experience, when you mess up positioning on a play like this, whether you miss a call due to positioning, or actually impact the play like this, inside his head he is definitely feeling "OH CRAP" and it makes you feel horrible. No umpire wants to screw up and make a big mistake like this.

Im seeing lots of comments saying he was rotating to home plate. Did you guys know that he can run around the other side of first base in foul territory, BEHIND the first baseman? I'm gonna go out on a REALLY REALLY long limb here and say that officials teach the first base ump to go around the backside of 1st base SPECIFICALLY TO PREVENT THIS SORT OF STUPID SHIT.

If that ball had gotten through this would have been a rotation for the first base umpire to the plate. Odds are he was sure the ball made it through the infield. When the ball was hit he moved into position for a possible play at first, then probably assumed the ball had made it through and started his rotation down towards the plate.

I'm not a Minor League Umpire, but am familiar with umpire mechanics. His position should be outside the diamond and set up 90 degrees to the incoming throw an ~20 feet from 1st base. He wouldn't go inside unless the ball is in the outfield. If the ball gets past the 3rd baseman, U1 would "button hook" to watch the runner touch the base, and be prepared to rotate home. The BU would rotate to cover the play at 3rd. I suppose he thought the ball was going to get through. That's more of a High School/College mechanic. Professional Leagues could have different rotations.

My initial thought was that U1’s position before the play started would be behind first base on the foul line, where he could judge a pick off throw from pitcher or call fair/foul on a ball hit down the 1B line. He would start a potential rotation from there.

The Umpire thought that the ball got by the 3rd baseman and was heading into the corner of the outfield. On a three man crew, the 2nd base umpire stays at 2nd. The home plate umpire rotates to 3rd. The 1st Base umpire covers the plate. What is also strange about the play, is that the umpire got hit in the front. He should be turned watching to make sure that the runner touches 1st base before going to second.

Couple things here: A lot of people saying that U1 was moving to home in rotation to 3rd. The problem is that if this umpire WAS in rotation, then they would be rotating on the OUTSIDE (foul territory) to home. They likely thought the ball got through (as many others have said), but came inside to slide with the batter runner to 2nd while U3 is sliding with R1 from 2nd to 3rd.

@RyanRobbins007
@RyanRobbins007 Жыл бұрын
U3 is going to stay inside to cover second and the batter-runner's advance there. U1 will release the batter-runner once he sees the batter-runner commit, then bust home. The PU rotates to third to get R1 there. This way, all three regular bases are covered and the plate can be covered if need be.

Presumed that the third baseman would miss the ball and it would roll into left field. He got ahead of himself, anticipating the play. Perhaps the team battling has been getting some good hits and hoping for some big plays. Or maybe it's been boring and finally someone hits the ball, running in surprise. The ball moved faster than his brain could perceive what's going on. He didn't even seem to know the ball hit him.

The brain was probably looking ahead.. player running to second.. fooled first base ump.. into thinking there's only 1 out. In that scenario.. third basemans play is to get 2 out by first throwing to second. Baseball is so tedious that the ump just fell asleep. It's 2 out!.. there's no need to get inside the bag for a better view at the first base play. So in summary. Hockey is more fun as the game is faster and more happens. Thanks to baseball for putting guys to sleep during the game.. even the ump can't stay awake. Micro sleep or not.. let's be real here.. no umps required in this game.. just put a bunch of cameras out there.. tracker in ball and make the game totally mistake free.

Umpired for 7 years here. In a 3 man crew, the umpire in the field will have the lead runner and the person behind first base will take the play on the batter runner. The umpire behind first base thought the ball was hit into the outfield on the third base side so he was trying to get ahead of the batter runner so it is easier to see him step on first and follow him to second. This is done by maneuvering inside of the diamond like he did. On some occasions the first base umpire might have to rotate to home if the plate umpire goes to get a tag at third but the way this played out and the fact the plate umpire wasn't running down the third base side, it is most likely that he misjudged the ball that was hit and believed there would be no play at first. To avoid this mistake, he should have waited and rotated in after the batter runner had passed first if it had gotten through, which it didn't.

Home plate umpire would move to cover third base, second base umpire stays for possible play at second base and first base umpire covers home. If the ball had made it through the infield the possible plays with a runner at first from the pitch are second, third then home.

I would love to give my perspective on this. I agree with everything everyone has said so far. But I want to add a little more. First, the thrown ball that hits an umpire is alive. This is so unusual that the front runner or base coach may not have seen it hit the umpire and think that the ball is in right field and try to take another base or is just confused. Pick up the ball and throw him out. Thrown balls hit the umpires all the time - maybe not like this incident though. Second people have mentioned two sets of three-man mechanics with a potential for an immediate play at third or home. This is discussd in pregame based upon the homeplate umpire's preferences. Remember you don't have an umpire to mke the call at each base. This creates a lot of problems and circumstances. In the standard mechanic (the mechanic used the most), the immediate call at third base with a runner at first is that the plate umpire takes the front (first base) runners' immeidate close play at third base, and the second base umpire takes the immediate call at second base, whether a return to second base by the lead runner or the throw form the outfielder for the follow up runner coming from first. You have the two most likely immediate close plays covered. One of the commentators - obviously an umpire - stated that, as the home plate umpire, as a priority, he would rather make sure that he covers the delayed home plate call himself, and not cover the immediate call at third. He wanted he second basee umpire to call the immediate third base call and the potential immediate second base call from halfway between third and second, instead even from a distance. If the second base umpire reads the play as it progresses, he can approach the bag to be in position for a close bang-bang play - especially the immediate outfield throw to third. Here, since the ball was on the line and likely in the outfield, the play on the runner at first base, after the outrfielder's long run to chase the ball down in foul territory, would most likely have been to the plate - not to third. The plate umpire wanted the first base umpire to call the delayed play on the follow up runner from half way between first and second, and read the play to get as close as he could to cover the close play. In the standard mechanic, in the immediate coverage of a batted ball into the outfield, the home plate umpire covers the lead runner at third, and the second base umpire covers second for the potential return for the lead runner or the play of the outfielder's throw on the follow up runner at second base. And there are several follow up plays. The principle is since you don't have an umpire for each base, get as close to the play as you can with a preference for the most advanced base. Each umpire has an immediate assignment and several possile follow-up assignments depending on the mechanic. Several commenters stated that the first base umpire thought the ball went threw on a mechanic where the home plate umpire would have had an immediate call at third base, so the first base umpire was going to be sure to cover the potential close call at home. Add to this that with a hard-hit, split-second ground ball to third with a runner on first, ninty five out of a hundred times, the third baseman is going to second base with the ball. The fielders were all in double play debth. Add to that, this is an extremely good play - if not a great play by the third baseman to field the ball. Atthe last split second, the tird baseman decided that he could not get the runner at second for the double play and threw to get the out at first. The hard part about this is that the third baseman did make such a good play. We all wanted him to be rewarded. The umpire took his eye off the ball because he thought the ball was going into the outfield. He couldn't see the ball anyway. He was no his way to cover home for the plate umpire or alternatively, beat the follow up runner to second base in case of the follow up play at second. Here, if the batted ball went into the outfield in foul territory, the likely play was not at third, but at home. The home plate umpire most likely would have read that. Also, he was still in position, if the homeplate umpire reading the play decides there would be no play at third but rather at home, as in this case where the outfielder would have had to run so far to get the ball, the followup play would be at home not at third. So the first base umpire reading that the home plate umpire is staying home and not going to third for that call, the first base umpire has the follow up call at second base and the second base umpire has the follow up call at third on the runners return to third. Granted, no matter how much you anticipate, you have to keep your eye on the ball, but inside the infield and closer to second, and depending on what the home plate umpire decides, he was in position to go whre he needed to for whichever follow up call the play lead him to. Anyway, this is my perspective. It is clearly the disadvantage of not having the fourth umpire. I don't think the first base umpire was really all that stupid, just making too many deciisons, in such a quick period of time with so many options. Just pick up the ball and find the next out.
@patrickhyde6125
@patrickhyde6125 Жыл бұрын
One more quick thought. Had the third baseman thrown to second, which was most likely the anticipated play, but the throw was wild and went into right field, the first base umpire was in position to beat the batter runner to second base for the play and would also have been in position to cover a throw from the right fielder to first base, while the second base umpire would be albe to cover the throw to third, and the home plate umpire would have been able to cover the throw for the play at the plate.

I am thinking the umpire didn't see the 3rd baseman snag the fair ball in foul territory. I'm guessing he saw the grounder hit fair and travel into foul territory and assuming the 3rd baseman had not chance of snagging the ball. It looks like he wasn't looking toward 3rd base when he started repositioning himself to the inside part of first base to get his angle in order to watch the baserunner round first while potentially advancing to second base.

In a 2-man system with nobody on (only reason the field umpire would be in what we call A position, behind 1st in foul territory is with nobody on), the field umpire will come in, and if a ball gets through the infield, he comes into the position you see him get hit in (but a little more towards 2B), does a pivot to watch the Batter-Runner touch 1st, then rotates with the runner to 2B for a potential play at 2nd. We know it isn't 2-man just from the point we have a runner on 1st; if it was 2-man umpiring, the field umpire would be in what we call position B; between the mound and baseline near 2B (to watch pick-offs, and handle calls for steal attempts, etc).

He's either new at 3-man and rotating like 2-man, or he's over-anticipating a rotation where the plate umpire heads down the 3rd baseline if the ball goes down the line. In that case, he's supposed to wait and be prompted by the plate umpire's movement.

So the first base umpire in this situation with a man on base uses whats called an inside out rule for positioning. If the ball is hit and fielded inside the infield then he will stay outside of the infield to make the call at first. If the ball is hit through the infield and hit into the outfield then he takes a position inside of the infield along with all of the base umpires. This will allow the umpires to keep the play in front of them and not have their back to the ball. With men on and a hit to the outfield the umpires rotate in a reverse pattern and the home plate umpire will make a call at third the first base ump calls the play at home. So I’m thinking he thought the ball got through the infield and was doing his rotation towards home plate. I umpired 17 years. Have some NCAA experience and I’ve never seen that happen. The third basemen made a major league play on the ball. I think he thought it got through.

This is so suspicious. If you focus on the zoomed in center field camera angle, the umpire is watching the ball during the play. He is not watching the play at first. Why is he not looking at the play at first? If the ball never hit him he would not have been able to make the call because he wasn't looking at the bag, the first baseman, or the runner. It looks like he deliberately interfered with the play. Very strange.

First base umpire didn't see the ball, assuming ball was going down the line. Plate umpire would rotate up to third base. First base umpire would rotate to plate, if ball went past third baseman, but he should have done that in foul territory and watching batter/runner touch first as he headed to plate.

I'm 90% sure the 1B umpire thought the ball got through to the outfield. When the ball goes to the outfield on that play, he's supposed to cut inside and follow the runner to second.

From what I see the ump was trying to get in position for a play at the plate. He had to of thought the ball went through the left side. Plate up is going to cover 3b, other field ump should be south of 2b and the 1b ump should be getting in position for a plate call. The ball was actually fielded ... Yikes, tough luck for the ump crew and the players. Stuff happens. Human and stuff..

Doesn't umpire interference end the play, or result in the runner being out? It looks like they let the runner on first go to second and called the batter safe. Shouldn't the play be dead?

I played ball and I umpired for about 40 years this umpire was so out of position I would question that there's not an umpire that's trained properly that would ever do that when you have four umpires on a field you don't need to rotate unless you see an umpire is out of position then you only go halfway down to make sure that you can see the play properly if there's a play at any bag where an umpire's absent umpire should not be absent from their base. If you look at the umpire he's looking right at the ball when he runs in front of it my opinion is he did it purposely

No explanation, ump at home would stay at home to cover third base line and home plate. Since there was no play at home ump on first should have stayed back and watch first base. First base ump is wrong on all accounts and should not have cut in front of throw. Should have been an automatic out to runner .

Ump probably thought the 3rd baseman was going to throw the ball to 2nd for the force out considering there was a man on 1st. Regardless the ump should be fired and have more awareness than that.
