a little bit of context for this video that might be useful Kip: The parts of the video where Badger and his friends are playing are the vanilla game, but the parts where it's just Lythero vs his crew of buddies (gary, paperboxhouse, DNO, Lucy, etc...) are done on a modded version of the game that adds new characters such as cyclops, orange hulk, RE4 Leon, etc. who did not make the cut to be in MVC3 or just generally haven't been in these games at all. Cyclops was in all the games up until Marvel 2 but didn't make it to Marvel 3, Krauser has never been in the game, neither has Hunk. The Marvel 3 Modding Scene got cracked WIDE open very recently when the biggest FGC-KZbinr by the name of Maximilian Dood put a monetary bounty on a function he wanted added to Marvel 3 as a mod. This developed into now being able to import animations into the game which was previously not possible for modded characters. What used to make modding so hard was that the game runs on an Engine that was pretty much not documented at all so it had to be completely reverse engineered and even just being able to import new models was a huge deal. Before animation import was made possible you literally had to scrap together animations with individual frames of character animations. Currently there's a Mod called the UMVC3 Community Edition in the works, combining a lot of character mods including new outfits for existing characters as well as entirely new characters like Blade, a lot of people are looking forward to it. Also the UMVC3 online is pretty bad which is why most tournaments that don't happen in person will be done through parsec, which i'm pretty sure Lythero and his other (non-badger crew) friends do to ensure a higher quality connection.

1:19:59 So to explain: for some unknown reason, Phoenix's Judge Super deletes and removes all hitboxes in Ryu's Super Hadoken, but if used far enough away, it doesn't hit Ryu. As using X-Factor cancels all other animations, including the intended stun spin from the Judge, Phoenix can now walk through the visual of the Super because there are no hitboxes while Ryu is stuck in the animation.

There's regular Akuma and then there's Shin Akuma. Regular Akuma is built into the game... Shin Akuma has been featured in other Street Fighter games and Capcom vs SNK 2 (CvS2) and CvS Chaos. This character is a mod, but the point of Shin Akuma is that he's a boss character that is meant to make a player lose and spend quarters in the arcade. Shin Akuma was designed to be BS. Also, Lythero explained the whole Phoenix Wright walking through Ryu's Super Hadouken, and quote. "So, fun fact: Phoenix Wright doesn't have invincibility frames, but he's able to walk through the beam because 'The Order in the Court' super *deletes all of the hit spheres in Ryu's move, but the animation keeps going."*

11:01 Dante is such an interesting character not just in UMVC3, but in fighting games in general. In order to emulate how vast of a moveset Dante has in his home game, every single special input with each button has him doing a different move. Not only that, but most of those inputs have follow-ups that can only be done by pressing either the same button or another button either before or during the attack animation. This means that Dante has nearly 40 DIFFERENT SPECIAL MOVES IN HIS MOVESET!! Not only that, but he has one of the coolest moves in any fighting game called the Bold Move. By pressing any attack button with the Special button, Dante will do a simple jump forward. It's pretty basic on the surface, but there's a unique property it has. Bold Move automatically cancels the endlag of any grounded special move you perform. That's already badass, but if you're fast enough and input another special move before Bold Move makes you airborne, you'll cancel Bold Move into that special move. This is known as Bold Cancelling, and it's sick as fuck! A practical example of Bold Cancelling is with Stinger, a forward-advancing move that has no special move follow-ups. In a standard Dante BnB combo, you would Stinger, Bold Cancel, then follow up with Volcano. You would then jump cancel and perform 2 jumping mediums, then land and pop the opponent up with Special, cancel into Clay Pigeon, cancel into Prop Shredder, then super jump into a small Aerial combo, land, then do Volcano into Beehive, then use Super. Most characters could just do their Magic Series combo (LMHS into super jump into MMHS in the air), but Dante's version of that combo kinda sucks. That's why learning these intricate combos as a BnB is insane!

So glad to see you interested in Lythero! I genuinely get so excited when I watch his stuff, whether it be fighting games or anything else! High level fighting games are an art form when you can see the mind games and set ups- what you’re talking about with combos is what we sometimes joke about a “flow chart” of the optimal path for inputs. Buffs and nerfs actually remove or add new ones depending on the health of the game, so knowing the hitboxes and mechanics of the game is indeed super important. Even as someone who isn’t used to 2D fighters, you’re genuinely very open minded and can quickly relate it back to your own experiences which is one of the reasons why I love watching you so much Kip! As for mods- yeah the FGC LOVES their modding, Maximilian being a forerunner for it too! His “funniest FGC Thread” would be a perfect video to check out to learn a bit more terminology just offhand and wonderful to laugh with.

9:50 Nah Kip. As Russian Badger and crew show in this very video (and their own) getting into fighting games is real easy. All you need is to press buttons and get the other guy's health to 0. Sure there is specialized knowledge that'll make you a better player, sure there are high execution possibilities and niche scenarios. But all of that is for after. All you need is pressing buttons and killing the other guy. That, everyone can do. The hard part is finding other people on similar skill levels. But its very much doable on new releases or the big popular current titles like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 or Guilty Gear Strive. 1:02:13 Vergil is literally the best character in the game. This clip of him turning the tides on a 1v3 with X Factor is something that happens in bracket VERY often, even at top level play. He's just THAT good. Oh, btw, every character gets different percentage buffs from X-Factor (Though, the timer remains consistent... Kinda.. But i don't want to spam your comment section with essays so i'll save that explanation for another day). X-Factor increases your movement speed, makes your framedata way faster and your damage better (Both in base damage and damage scaling). It also makes you impervious to chip damage (chip damage kills in this game) and heals any red health. And, naturally, this X-Factor last longer AND is MORE EFFECTIVE the less characters you have alive (By that i mean that the damage and movement speed boost increase, the framedata doesn't, neither do the chip damage negation and healing they remain consistent). So a Max lvl X-Factor Vergil (I.E. you're on your last character and you activated X-Factor WHEN you're at your last character) will get a 75% damage boost and 25% speed boost... And that can stack with Devil Trigger's own damage and speed buff, btw. Edit: I also forgot to mention, you can use X-Factor to cancel LITERALLY ANY MOVE IN THE GAME, EVEN SUPERS. You can also activate it on block to prevent yourself from getting chipped..... There's a reason why X-Factor has held the title of most broken comeback mechanic in an FG uncontested.... Until DBFZ buffed Sparking Blast into oblivion, now X-Factor has competition.

In nemesis’ case a lot of his attacks have super armor which let him just go straight through other characters’ attacks. A major thing to mention Kip with this, when Badger and the boyz are involved it's not using mods with an obvious exemption, but when Lythero is with his usual group it's mods galore, case and points, Leon, Krauser (probably misspelled his name), and Asura are modded characters. Also Fun Fact: the main reason modded characters as a whole developed is because Maxamilliadood basically made a $1000 bet and the community took that shit. He basically mad that bet because he's spent so much time in MvC wether it's 2, 3, UMvC3, or the most recent one he's working with people on MvC: Infinite. Also mods are fine online on the PC version if both have the mods installed, otherwise is glitchy as hell when you use a new modded character like Cyclops, DMC1 Dante, Nero, Storm and so on.

in more traditional fighting game height tends to not affect much of the gameplay, at least not in the way smash does it. some games do have different gravity for different characters but overall height affects more stuff like how high you can still be hit from a crouching or standing state. Can create some nasty situations for big bodies

52:41 Oh yeah baby, that's the DHC (Delayed Hyper Combo) right there. Hyper Combo is basically MvC's word for supers, and you can cancel your supers into another character's super. Though, in MvC2 and UMvC3, you can basically cancel anything on whiff. You can whiff a button and cancel it into a dash or a special/super*. If you cancel it into a dash, you cancel the dash into that same button and then repeat the cycle, this is called plink dashing. (Side note: If you look back at the Orange Hulk clip where he's tea-bagging, that's actually just his initial dash animation being cancelled and starting over again, Hulk does a "hop" when he dashes) Another way of dashing really fast in this game is by repeatedly dashing and then crouching (thus cancelling the dash animation and allowing you to dash again), known as a wavedash. This is why you see some characters approaching really fast while "tea-bagging", that's just them wavedashing... or plink-dashing, they tend to look similar. Oh and just to clarify, there is a way to dash without double tapping a direction. If you press Light + Medium attack (Or Light + Special attack, i don't remember) you get a dash, and to do a back dash you just have to hold back while pressing the shortcut. This is used even in wavedashing and plink dashing since it's faster than double tapping, but you have to be precise and press the two buttons at almost the exact same time otherwise you get an attack instead of a dash. As to which one you should use.. Well... Both are the same speed but for some characters plink dashing is required because some supers and special moves in this game require a ↓ ↓ + button input (Like Ryu with his install), so wavedashing will make you do an accidental move, wavedashing also makes you slightly more vulnerable on account that you have to crouch and that limits your options... But the downside of plink-dashing is that it's not consistent across every character because everyone has a different window to cancel their Heavy attack into a dash, some are more lenient than others (I say Heavy attack because since you dash with Light + Medium this means that you pretty much need to use Heavy to get a plink dash, and also because Heavy has the most startup and thus the better cancel window), and if you fail to cancel the heavy... Well.. You whiff a heavy, which can leave you vulnerable since you're probably not to expecting the button to whiff so won't be able to cancel it into something else in time (unless you react fast enough). *: This is how Haggar went from doing the pipe move into his command grab. His pipe moves are just normal buttons, his heavy buttons, specifically. Though, to be fair there's a decent amount of fighting games that let you cancel buttons into specials, it's just that in Marvel it's way more lenient and pretty much everyone can do it. In other fighting games, cancelling a button into a throw or a special is called kara cancelling, in this game i just call it whiff cancelling, kara cancelling can be useful to let you grab or do special/super moves from ranges where they would otherwise not reach. And in Haggar's case as well as UMVC3 in general it's good to catch your opponent off guard by making it seem like you're going to do one thing or whiff an unsafe button, and then do another thing instead to catch them trying to punish you. Cancelling pipe into grab is a mix-up because good players will see the pipe and try to block it on reaction but then they get grabbed instead and the grab is unreactable. If you jump the Haggar player can just not cancel the pipe and let it hit you on the way up or force you to block the pipe in the air, and from there Haggar can get another mixup. And if you press buttons to hit Haggar out of the command grab startup you run the risk of getting hit by an assist or the pipe.

I think you’re looking a fighting games the wrong way. I don’t think the skill floor is a “barrier to entry”, it’s just part of the game and what makes it fun. It’s like how in a Dark Souls game it might take you 30 or 40 attempts to figure out exactly how a boss works and find away to beat it. Getting your ass kicked is a fundamental part of the game and it’s pretty much the same for fighting games. Figuring things out is the fun of it. “If my opponent does this, how do I counter it?” “If I do this and it hits, what should i do next?”. Figuring this stuff out is what makes fighting games satisfying just like when you finally beat that dark souls boss after getting ass-blasted 500 times in row, you feel accomplished and everything you learnt can be applied elsewhere in the game and you build a catalogue of knowledge. That’s how I see it anyway.

1:14:16 Yeah, that's literally how you beat Phoenix. If you let Phoenix get 5 meter, when she dies (she has the lowest health pool in the game) she transforms into Dark Phoenix. Now, regular Phoenix is honestly very mid, maybe even bottom tier character... and I still think Vergil is the best character in the game (he doesn't need 5 meter to be good and even when he's not an anchor with lvl 3 X-Factor he can easily wreck your shit).... But Dark Phoenix is honestly just as scary as Vergil. You NEVER want to leave Phoenix for last because Dark Phoenix makes her projectiles and traps so overwhelming it's almost impossible to deal with, her damage and speed become insane and her combos and conversions are crazy. She gains a teleport move that she can use while you're being forced to block her traps so she can force you into blockstun and mix you up or just teleport to escape from the corner or create distance from you, she regains all of her health back as well and she can use X-Factor to become even stronger. And once the transformation activates you can't hit her out of it, she gets a free turn, if you try to hit her she will beat you. If she doesn't get a direct hit, she WILL kill you through chip damage. Her only "weakness" is that, much like regular Phoenix, she's dead if you start a combo on her because she still has the lowest health pool in the game, so you only need to hit her once.... But good luck doing that against a good Phoenix player. (Oh, as a bonus fun fact, in case any of you were wondering: Phoenix/Dark Phoenix have 375,000 health. That sounds like a lot but most attacks in this game deal at least 10k damage when unscaled. And for perspective, Thor, the character with the biggest health pool, has 1,250,000 health).

fun fact, marvel vs capcom created two crossover crack ships involving morrigan. in mvc2 spiderman and morrigan are not only close friends and talk about relationships but she fully thinks peter takes too much abuse and cares for him. then in MvCI she flirts with ghost rider, who then puts an arm around her and pulls her close at one moment

43:11 Actually... Seth is mid, his kit isn't necessarily bad, but his normals are just.... Either awful or very situational because most of them only cover very specific areas and leave you extremely vulnerable due to end lag. For example: His up-tilt almost never sees use and his smash attacks so slow that you don't really wanna throw them out unless you're sure of what you're doing, even when you have wing which gives your smash attacks armor. Almost everything in his kit is either reactable, laggy or both. That's not to say he's a bad character though, his kit is still strong, it's just that a lot of it is very situational so you tend to be stuck with only a few options in neutral. Hence him being mid.

darkstalkers is great, it basically created modern anime fighting games as we know it since it popularized air dashing. All the characters are iconic too, the sprites are also well animated and bursting with personality and really cartoony/exaggerated expressions. A real send up to old horror movies; sadly a dead franchise though since SF is more popular. Its only recently avaliable on steam with the capcom fighting game collection, until then its ONLY recent port was on the PSN PS3 store. Yes, ONLY ps2 (and i think 360 too), where that port infamously was the unit of gauging interest in reviving the series (and capcom also rather infamously, has CRAZY sales goal expectations for even stuff like rereleases)

He is agreed to be the most broken character in the entire roster. The fact that Lythero, arguably one of the best Phoenix Wright players, says he doesn't need to know how to play a character, you know they're dummy broken.

That whole thing about crossovers reminded me of something that always makes me upset. We could have had Samus in Fortnite. Nintendo was a bit too aggressive on keeping their IP, however. They wanted to have Samus be a Switch Version Exclusive skin (that parts fine) but they also wanted her to *only* be visible on the Switch version.
