The soft style combined with the harsh horrors faced by the children is really amazing. It tells such a fantastic story, but I hope the little boy is okay. The other children are scared of being killed by the hunter, but they shouldn’t kill their friend. The narrator is also very good, they have a great voice, good pacing, and emphasize in the right places.

Love this one. The soft lineless style really lends itself to a storybook feel. How it depicts the cycle of violence and abuse. How the abused becomes the abuser when they refuse to address trauma. So sad how badly they felt they needed to hide their guilt when they were innocent until the moment they decided to inflict violence on one of their own. The open ending is really great too. I doubt there was still a bullet in the chamber, but if he was killed the horsemen would find them red-handed. 10/10 very beautiful

Spoiler It wasn’t until rewatching that I figured out the parallel between the pomegranate, the dead man, and their connection to the bird. the gold had no value for the children. would've been rocks to them any other day.. the first and only time they saw it, gold came out of a corpse slaughtered in cold blood. part in a murder, a death, betrayal, greed, violence through rocks is what was shared. to each a token of guilt, pain, fear but mostly guilt not to buy their silence - their truth - but to invoke in them a lie. not his but their own. because the deed was now theirs too. they held the bounty in their hands. to some that would have sufficed but innocence is formidable. it is life itself. so they traded the equals, their innocence for the man's gift of life. in this sense, the gold was also life?? my baby auguste was the smallest, the bravest.

I absolutely love storytelling like this. Things start off so whimsical but as things get bleaker the audience, in all their cynical glory, begins to recognize the usual defects of human nature and the fairy tale world starts to crumble at the edges.
@kaylag.58073 жыл бұрын
I've watched this short film multiple times now and I'm stunned by the story and the visuals every time. I noticed how Auguste never actually helped with the hiding of the man's body (the other kids drag the body but he lingers behind), but by staying silent, he's complicit in the murder. I'm convinced that the hunter wasn't going to come back and kill them, but their fear resulted in the gun being fired, implying the truth would be exposed anyway, even if they had to kill one of their own to protect themselves. In trying to protect themselves and ignore the weight of their actions, they exposed themselves and the crime they committed...

The thing I love most about this are the small details which contribute to the overall message, like how Auguste has different coloured eyes or how at 2:26 he sits slightly away from all the other kids or how the game of hide and seek could represent the kids reactions to the murder. I also love how the song-like script, simple (but incredible) music and animation style all contribute to the story book feel but it contrasts with the dark themes or compliance and trauma. In short: I really, really love this.

An interesting touch is the hunters eyes. They are a very distinct color and at the end, when the other children are pointing the rifle at Auguste, they show an image of one taking aim and his eyes are the same color as the hunters. Edit: at 1:27 there is a shot of all of their eyes and it's not just the one who points the rifle at the end. All of the other children have light eyes like the hunter's, except for Auguste with his brown ones.

And, the scene where there was a loud music after the shot and the chivalry running with their horses, only for the kids to break the silence by entering the scene; it's too late, they caught Auguste.

For anyone wondering if they shot Auguste, it is very unlikely that they would have been able to, since the rifles from that era could only fire one shot at a time. That means that the hunter would have had to left ammunition for the gun with the children, which he did not. On top of that, they likely would not know how to load the gun properly either, making it either backfire, or not go off at all.

Why are these 7 kids kept away in the beginning? Is this a symbol of anything? I like the tone and the way it talks about the obedience coming from fear. The 6 don't even try to think about the justice and confine the truth and their conscience behind the bars of the gate. Their obedience is an evil action against the goodness. We don't know anything about their growth and their connection with the outside world. Chances are that the short talks about a narrow-minded governmental/institutional group that always make the decisions under the circumstances of being controlled and threatened by the powerful ruler.

But that little kid could die just from great fear it experienced. The film isn't to show outcome because then some could judge them by the outcome. And outcome is random. Point is that children wanted to kill their friend because he reminded them of their conscience
