I can tell you exactly what this is about. Mr. Edwards does not like what the lawyer is telling him. It’s not uncommon for defendants to not want to hear the truth. They want to hear that they’re right and nothing bad will happen. Sometimes that’s just not the case.

Judge Simpson is a gem! He gave the students are hard time... Which makes them snap out of their first appearance fear and interact with the judge " on their feet". That's what it is all about. He could have nursed them through... But he welcomed them to the teal world... With humor! They won't forget their first "at bats".

Judge Simpson has a great laugh. Even when dealing with challenging cases he manages to set a bit less stressful tone. I am not prone to visit courtrooms but I would appreciate a bit less tension if I was in court.

Please don't give him another lawyer, he wants to lawyer shop for a free attorney. Judge needs to put a halt to this nonsense. He has some kind of strategy that no attorney will be able to follow. This better be the last time he gets another attorney. The first attorney tried his best but the defendant doesn't want to do it except the srategy he has in his head.

I agree they need to stop them attorney shopping. I saw one court room where they told the defendant they could get a new attorney, they wouldnt be attorney shopping and it was the last time they would allow it. If they want a new attorney they should hire one at their own expense

Imagine going in for surgery and telling the surgeon how to do their job and when they tell you that’s wrong, you demand a new surgeon. Defendants do have rights, however, it’s is not a defendants right to dictate to their court appointed, tax payer funded, defence attorney, how to litigate the case. It’s a perfect example of the level of entitlement human beings have reached in the world. You were charged with a crime, the court believes there is enough probable cause to go forward with those charges, you’re getting your due diligence yet you think you know better than a well practiced attorney.

They're probably both law-school students doing an internship with the attorney they mention. If they were licensed attorneys, they wouldn't need to ask for permission to appear under supervision. I do kind of appreciate the tongue-in-cheek way that Judge Simpson kind of toys with them, though. :-)

Probationary status. They get experience with mentorship from a licensed attorney. One showed up last year in Judge Simpson’s court with flying arrogance. Got taken down quickly.

I have seen many Michigan law students literally "practicing" in Simpson's court, but this is the first time I have seen MSU law students. Seems they could find plenty of courts closer to Lansing and avoid the 3-hour drive.

Criminals sometimes are not allowed to change free public defenders. Judges will often say no. Taxpayers fund the Criminals. But the criminal if in custody stays in jail. When out on bail judges are usually tougher and will threaten to remand criminal who is trying to delay courts sentencing.

Everyone is entitled to a defense. That’s how the system works. It’s not about what the attorney “wants” it’s about representing their client. If you were in court, would you want your representative to think you’re guilty and throw in the towel? Or do you want them to defend you to the best of their ability? Some of the defendants are dumb as hell, and these defense attorneys have to work with what they are given.

@Remedey49 In Asia, people have worn masks _for decades_ if they themselves are sick. It's a proven way to have one more layer of keeping your germs to yourself. (Yes, I realize it's not 100%. But I'd take a reduction in the output of germs if the sick person has to go out into society.) I've noticed a very slight uptick in people doing the masking-while-sick thing here in the USA. So perhaps that is the reason. Who knows, but really, does it hurt anyone around them? No, it does not, so why do you care?
