That poor thing still needs a ton of TLC (Truck Loads Of Cash) to be 100% again. It's all original but when the condition is this bad that doesn't matter any more as it doesn't have the same desirability as it once did. Condition is everything to collectors but if this was just a daily driver type bike then most people probably wouldn't care. At least this got some love and is all in one piece again. It's too bad that the paint can't be fixed to the original colour but it is what time and wear and tear have made it. This is a true survivor. Thank you for sharing this with us.

what would be the best way to use and apply the owatrol oil? brush & sand paper? or soak the components?

+Jim Zucker That would only stop further rust from occurring not remove the rust without harming the original paint, as demonstrated in the video, so really that would be the next step after soaking said rusted parts in the oxalic acid,.

Nicely done! So many would have blasted this paint, you saved the bike for sure. I like how you used original style round head screws and square nuts. So many don't understand that the little things make it correct. I have this same bike, but Schwinn Excelsior, missing the chain guard and front light.

Very beautiful bike I'm glad that color came out in all it's former glory for a 1941 Schwinn one thing I've noticed though but you probably couldn't get the Chrome to shine are those hard to find if it's what I'm thinking for those rims are Lobdell it looks as though the Chrome didn't come out are those rims if they did you would see the written scripted word Lobdell on those rims but other than that that is one beautiful bicycle.

Why didn’t you spray a clear topcoat and only used linseed oil? Can I spray a clear 2K topcoat (in can) on my 2009 aluminium bike? I like to preserve the original paint so I cleaned it up (rubbing compound and polishing paste and finished it off with wax. It looked better. BUT, do you think it is ok if I spray a clear topcoat to make it shine and be permanently protected for a few years? Kinda restore it to its prev beauty.

I don't get it - how can the paint which has already chipped off leaving just the rusty steel frame be recovered? Are you sure the red isn't just the rust that turned a different hue from the process? Anyways looks good, only the music was a bit annoying and unfitting. And good job on keeping the one piece crankset and bottom bracket instead of putting in modern plastic crap.

Hi David, Great video and cool beat. How long did you leave the frame exposed to the Oxalic acid? I have a Colson looptail with OG paint and badge that I want to restore/preserve the paint as much as possible. I want to clean it up without damaging the paint. Thanks in advance.
@davidlarson39055 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave thanks! From what I've seen, you can leave painted pieces like your frame in oxalic acid for as long as you want. It shouldn't affect the paint at all (other than removing rust stain from it). If you're using a fairly concentrated solution with hot water, then an hour does wonders. Sometimes it takes longer - just depends how much rust you're trying to remove. Just check on it every 30 minutes or so and see how it works for you! 👍
