One tough thing with repentance I think is that there are massive structures in place that contribute to people 'behaving' the way they do in the first place...so when repentance is presented at this baseline individual level such as 'stop sinning' in relation to behavior, there is something bigger at play contributing to the outwardly seen behavior...when many times, it isn't actually that individual's fault but with the environment one is in. Something might be their 'fault' if still thinking of the behavior, but in some way it's all been passed down to us generationally and through structures. It is really difficult to figure out what is to be 'repented' of too, when so many Christians disagree on sin itself, what it is, and the many forms it has.

Luke 24, 25-27. 44-48 [25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: [26] ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? Fact 1 Your word is the truth. So let this truth make them completely yours. John 17:17 Sanctify them in Your Truth; Your Word is Truth. John 17:17 Fact 2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not. John 1:1-5 is speaking of Jesus. Fact 3 Jesus identified himself as: I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 Fact 4 A preincarnate Christ was part of the omnipresent God: ....that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Acts 17:27-28 Conclusion, truth is there all around us. It's for us to detect and be in sync with. So in that sense, you're right: No man decides/determines "truth". It's to be discovered, preceived, sense, and be in sync with. The remarkable thing is that truth is a thing, spirit and a person. Truth might get crushed and killed, but it rises again. 2 Corinthians 5:15 This very idea brings "dead" people to life.

I would want to tighten up the question, "Is religion good for society?" When I speak with my friends about Christianity, they immediately draw on the caricature of an angry tyrant in the sky waiting to send people to hell. Is that kind of religion good for society? Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe some people need the threat of spiritual violence to maintain a civil society. I would maybe change the question to be, "Does this type of religion entice people into a close relationship with the Divine?" To that question, I would say no. Any belief system that promotes fear of the other party cannot be good in establishing a loving, trusting relationship. To that end, is Christianity as it's commonly portrayed good for relating to God? I would say, no, that view is not helpful.
