Let's unbox 16 sand geckos! In today's video, I'm so excited to share that I am not only expanding my work with the Stenodactylus genus but also creating a new "Project Series" on the channel where I share my efforts to systematically contribute to establishing a captive-bred representation of a particular species or genus in Herpetoculture. I hope you enjoy the video!

I’ve kept both of these species on and off for the last 6 or 7 years and they are so fun and unique. I bred the steno stenos completely by accident,by having them in a natural setup babies just appeared. Also they the way they communicate with their tails is just one of the coolest things found in nature!

Gotta love seeing the underloved obscurities of the hobby get the attention they deserve! Qotd: I think that wild caught is acceptable for certain species and situations because there are some that just aren't available (one example is my dream lizard, gonocephalus chameleontanus, which is a bit difficult to breed, but if I get the opportunity I won't hesitate to buy a wild caught group to breed)

If you like stenodactylus, you should try coleonyx, specifically coleonyx brevis. They're a lot like stenos, but look and act like mini leopard geckos. I've had Squeak, my female, for a couple of years, and she's one of the best animals I've had the pleasure of working with. Also I agree 100% about wild caught animals, I only source captive bred animals to keep as pets.

They’re GORGEOUS!! Can’t wait to get to know them!!! QOTD: I don’t believe in, or will buy wild caught animals unless it’s for the reason you’re doing it, to help repopulate. If it helps the species survive then yes. If you’re just taking from the many in the wild, then no, it’s not fair to them. These lil guys are sooo fun to watch!! They’re not terrified either! (That they show) Dunno if I’ve ever seen more cute in one bin! Love the Egyptian style music while they eat, bet they felt right at home! Lol I love how they hunt and that tail wave! I’m smitten! ❤ even their poops are adorable

The wagging tails were so cute and funny! I kept pausing and going back a couple seconds to rewatch some of the awesome clips you got of the new ones drinking, the feedings, the curiosity about the tongs, and the digging. I hope that if they bury their eggs in fine sand, that they do it close enough to the side so you can see the egg through the glass.

for the question of the day I agree with what you said about using wild caught animals to kickstart a captive breeding population, I would also add that I see no issue with occasionally bringing in more wild caught animals in the future for strict use in adding genetic diversity to the captive population(this would of course be a regulated process), many species we have lost from captivity due to lack of genetics in both the zoo and private sector of animal keeping

These are beautiful! Maybe if you get any new animals you could start them off with a nice soak? That way they can get hydrated right away and quickly since they seemed super thirsty. They are all looking much better and some of their colors have gotten so much brighter. I'm guessing bc they're being cared for properly and not stressed from the shipping. So glad tour trying to get these more established in the hobby so these animals don't have to be taken from the wild as pets. I agree with you on wild-caught as well. Thanks for sharing these cuties with us. Have a great day!

I agree with your stance on wild-caught 100%. I think wild caught often don’t make great pets and can contribute to population decline in the wild. Keeping demand for wild-caughts as low as possible deters irresponsible/illegal collection. As cute as these are, my casual search for them yielded only a few “field collected,” specimens. I have no plans to breed anything in the near future so if I ever get any Stenodactylus ssp, it’s going to be a while. Assuming they ever start being produced in captivity in the states.

Beautiful geckos. I definitely agree with you that wild caught animals should be going to people who have intentions to establish a solid captive bred population. The ONLY exceptions I can see are when the animal is an invasive species and taking it from the wild that way goes to help preserve a native population from being depopulated for the pet trade.

If you have any qs, you should ask Wally Kerr. He's been keeping these for ages. Supreme Gecko is his channel. He streams stuff like that too, talking to other creators about gecko stuff

And I'll add, I'm with you on the wc/import issue. It isn't black and white. You're doing it right.

Something I’ve seen some other keepers do is put a small rock in the water dish, which they can stand on and help them to get out. It wouldn’t be as slippy as the bottom of the plastic dish, and should help them be more comfortable with the dish.

Thank you for the suggestion! Thankfully there have been zero issues and I’ve made sure ahead that the smallest of the geckos could climb out!

Awesome video!! I love small geckos :) I actually got a pair of the same geckos a few weeks ago! Unfortunately one of mine is very skinny and not eating well. I currently have it in a quarantine tank. I'm using paper towels for the quarantine area, should I use sand instead? Thanks for all the info!

QOTD: I agree with your opinion. It just makes more sense to have wild caught creatures to be only used as breeders. Cause unlike their parents the offspring won't have many wild tendencies like biting and such due to the nature of their upbringing.

I’ve fallin in love with this specific gecko & want a pair…I had a bearded dragon but when she passed I haven’t used her tank…been really trying to to find them where I live but the pet stores don’t even know what I’m talking bout when I mention them 😢…waitin to hear about our next reptile show…but if I hav to order I will…I’m jus nervous if anything happens to them…

I completely agree ref wild caught, I only agree with this in the instance a species is not established in the community and you are going to breed to help eliminate people buying wild caught by producing captive bred.

They remind me of my rough knob tail gecko (u. milli) he is so cute and I love misting him and watching him lick the water droplets and eat mealworms. Last couple times I've tried to handle him he's thrashed and barked at me so I've been leaving him alone 😂

I agree on the wild caught take, however, my house gecko is “wild caught”. I say “wild caught” because I rescued him from my cat. He was rescued as a true baby and had been hand fed since then. I knew I couldn’t release him because he had become accustomed to being hand fed so he became my pet. I’m happy to report he is happy and healthy and living his best gecko life

These geckos come from the area where I live. I know a researcher who studies them in their natural environment and I was also involved in research on them. These geckos are psammophilous creatures which means they live on sand dunes and need sand to live naturally. I recommend making a terrarium of sand for them and not of rocky desert soil, that way you can imitate their natural living environment and see how they live naturally.

I agree. The establishment doesn't have to be for the pet trade, but to save endangered species as well.

I agree with bringing in wild caught but I only think it should be done once every 10 years or so to keep the gene pool (somewhat) at a low COI. Idk the question has lots of complex factors and that is my extremely simplified answer. Love your content by the way!❤

@@Reptiliatus Yeah I thought it had died when I didn't see it the whole winter, but it was just spending the winter in its burrow without eating and drinking. I keep it together with my Quedenfeldtia offspring. Hard to find data with regards to their maximum lifespan.
