Unboxing New Orchids - A Bit Disappointing?

As mentioned in the last video, here is the unboxing of the last new orchid for this year. Not quite 'as expected', but none-the-less, a good plant plus 'something extra'.

I use to have Cali nights and I have a tiny Kiwi Midnight now probably 3 years before she will bloom, You will love the blooms

Blooms can blast more often than not when brought home blooming so I consider it being in spike a win. And it's growing at the pace of your other cymbidiums so it won't be up to "funny business". Best of luck with nursing the new plants.

This cumbidium blooms very easily Roger. One of my favourites. It does grow huge tho! What you have there it's a rather youngish plant 😂 Better find a lot of space for it 🙂

My guess of cymbidium was correct. Though I was thrown off when the Phal was brought out of the box. Can’t wait for the cymbidium to bloom those flowers look gorgeous and I love the white picotee. Happy growing. And Merry Christmas

You're welcome! I suggested the bag holder. LOL. Yours is not like what I use (mine goes into the bag to open it and folds up when not in use. But mine is my favorite gardening tool. Made gardening life much easier! Have to add, I love how your opinion of Cymbidiums has done a 180 turn. I really appreciate when mine gift me with a flower spike.

If the company was so worried about shipping temps that they included all that wrapping, they were probably also very worried that shipping a plant in spike would end up with all the buds blasting. Looks like it will have lovely blooms!

Thanks for the unboxing. I correctly guessed it was Cali Night from your clues but I have an advantage. I've had one for a number of years. This will turn into a very large plant over a relatively short period of time. I started with 1 spike when I bought mine, the following year it was 3, the year after, 7 and last year 9. This year mine also has nine. My plant also has a tendency to have quite deep folds in some of the leaves but not the concertina effect. As time unfolds the spikes will also increase the bloom numbers. Mine has gone from 13 or 14 on average per spike, to over twenty on some spikes this year. The blooms are also quite a lot smaller than your standard Cymbidium bloom. I would say less than half size. Enjoy.

3 years?! No way! Where did the time go? I was leaning towards the right side, to look around the carton flaps 😂. Okay, your disappointment is understandable. At least there's spikes developing. Wouldn't have thought it to be that kind of orchid though. Most definitely not after you said "opposite of white", lol. The only two I could think of were Black Comet and Fredclarkeriana 'After Dark'... and yes, my brain is absolutely not working right now, as far as names are concerned. Gorgeous blooms on the one you've got though - whenever they will open. I would've laughed if the extra orchid would've been Phal. Sogo Banana Chocolate - just to stick to the color scheme.

Dear Roger, Your comments are not fair as the plant was advertised with 1-2 developing spike, please read description on website! Also the free plant was for everyone who ordered plants for more than £50 as part of our December giveaway , not because the Cymbidium was not in bloom. I would like to highlight we always fill up the boxes with newspaper/paper since we have started trading and we don`t just put the plants in without filling. For viewers : the advertisement was checked again after the delivery and before making contact. It still said 'in bloom'. This morning however, the web-site has been updated to remove the words 'in bloom'. Also, my plant was only £45 so I didn't think it qualified for the 'December giveaway' and therefore must be a gift. Either way, it was a gift so thanks for that. Having checked previous unboxings, yes, the boxes are always filled - my mistake.

I had to remove the ''in bloom'' part to make it more clearer.... it will be interesting to see how the spikes develop over the coming weeks!

My understanding was that a spike was actually in bloom with 1-2 other spikes in development. Anyway, it's still a good plant and we will all watch the progress of the spikes. Until buds are actually open, an orchid would be deemed to be 'in spike' or 'in bud'. Once the buds open it is said to be 'in bloom'.

I agree with Roger. If the description says it’s “in bloom” then it’s “in bloom”. It’s so annoying when you buy an orchid that says it’s in flower and it’s not. They meant it was in flower 5 years ago.🤪

As of this moment the website does still say in bloom - I’d say it should be an interesting email as it’s obviously in contravention of the Consumer Rights Act . A bashed up Phal doesn’t take away your rights .

My email exchange was fine - with all the packaging etc this time of year, the web-site just didn't get updated. I got an apology. There is no point in taking it any further as to make any sort of claim, I would have to return the goods.
