I'm absolutely with you about opening sealed copies and playing them. All the collectors who get up in arms about this should collect something else. If you're only collecting for the value of an item, buy gold. Like you, I've bought sealed copies of vinyl because I know the record is going to be in mint condition and not full of scratches and surface noise.
