I love listening to you get excited about the pencils! I have Derwant Watercolour penils and they work so well and are soft, but the wood parts have cracked so tend not to use them anymore. Not sure if it's due to our humid climate. I had normal Lyra pencils for school art and really liked them.

I loved this. I have the Faber-Castell and I like to use them along with watercolor for added texture or details. Your birds are terrific. They have just enough detail, but not overdone. Thank you for sharing an actual use of the pencils as well as the swatching.

I love watercolor pencils. They're great for under paintings and quick urban sketching. You're so fun to watch. You've never met a color you didn't like. I get excited watching you get excited about every swatch.

It was a joy to hear you so delighted while swatching the new supplies. I was really excited to see this in my feed today as well. A couple of months ago, I started sketching with water soluble graphite in a live figure drawing class. I fell in love with the play between wet and dry textures and vastly prefer them for this sketchy style over how many people use them for fully rendered paintings. This is the first video I've seen that uses them similarly! My favorite bits of this spread are the hatch marks on the wren and the wing and tail of the dove :)

Lovely comparison Ohn Mar! And I love your art. The reason the Albrecht Durer didn't dissolve completely when you said it in the video was that you had just dipped the pencil in water, the color then always sticks to the surface. Otherwise they just dissolve completely if used dry.

My favorite play with the inktense or the Albrecht Durer is to put a lot of water on paper and then go in with the pecils very soft. It makes such beautiful marks when the colours spread. :)

I like to use the Inktense pencils when I want a permanent base to layer on top of. Or to define shapes that I don't want to lose as I watercolor over top. I sketch with nonpermanent watercolours and then the lines dissolve into my watercolours as I go. No need to worry about pencil lines showing through then!

Hi Ohn Mar, I really enjoy your channel 😊. I have recently purchased Caran D'ache CREATIVE ART MATERIALS Palette Aquarelle to add another dimension to using water colour pencils. This has a rough side on which you scribble on colour pencil/s and then add water with a paint brush - this gives a nice smooth blend to apply to paper. Also a brilliant way to mix colours. I can see using this in conjunction with the various methods you used to paint your birds. Best wishes to you. 🌸

Hello Ohn Mar, and thank you for another fun and inspiring video! I’ve been playing and creating my whole life, and I love trying new techniques. You are so amazing and making beautiful and interesting art! I’m so baffled by the process of multi-media art work. I love your colour combos and end results! These birds you created are so lovely, charming and beautiful! Thanks for sharing your process which is so magical! I hope to mix my mediums of watercolor, pencil and ink and play with these ideas as well! Life goes by quickly and I want to play with all my art supplies too!!! 🥳🤩💐

Exciting to see you try watercolour pencils, and looking forward to seeing them in your future work! I am curious which sketchbook you are using when you are painting the lovely birds? I looove watercolour pencils, and my faves are the Albrecht Durers, followed by Inktense. Some observations from using them - the lighter colours in the Albrecht Durer stay a lot brighter when less water is used. For both Albrecht Durer and Inktense, if one presses hard or draws into water, the pencils lines won’t dissolve as well as if they are drawn with light to medium pressure on dry paper.

This was a fun video, I really enjoyed your excitement over each colour - it was honestly a breath of fresh air. I have a very basic primary colours of the inktense that was a gift, and much more of the faber castel watercolour pencil. I love that with the primaries you can mix them so if I go sketching, I can take a small handful & a water brush. I tried the derwent watercolour pencils (not the inktense) but didn’t like them as much! 🫶

There's a learning curve to work with Inktense, it's not watercolor, it's ink. Light hand layers work best. You can also work it permanently on fabric. I have a couple of Tipp-Ex pens but wasn't sure how to make use of it. Thank you for sharing.

This was a great demonstration Ohn Mar TY! I have a set of Jane Davenport watercolor pencils and Im still playing around with them. But I do like dipping them into water the same way you have shown us because I love the creamy texture. They also work ni9cely used on damp watercolor like some of these.

Friendly reminder: Inktense is NOT watercolor, it is water soluble ink. Derwent has another range that is their watercolor pencils. I have the Inktense, an old set of Derwnt’s watercolor pencils, and the Faber Castell ones. I like Inktense but have not used them for may projects since they really require an entirely different working skill that I have not developed yet. The standard Derwent wc pencils are good if you like a really sketchy style but don’t dissolve as much as I would like so I use them as Bible highlighters now. And the Albrecht Durers (Faber Castell) are wonderful. I am a traditional watercolorist (though working on expanding my style) and I love how the ADs completely blend out leaving few to no pencil marks if I don’t want them. I would recommend using a razor and cutting away the wood casing from the tip if you are going to be dipping them though: the water will eventually crack the wood and make the pencils uncomfortable to hold.
@jessbutterfly19344 ай бұрын
You probably already know I haven’t seen the video all the way through yet but inktense pencils by Derwent are not watercolours. They are ink and when they dry they are permanent and you can’t re-wet them. They should mostly stay in place. Both Faber Castell and Derwent colours do completely dissolve but it does matter very much the paper that you use in order to achieve, this effect
@OhnMarWinArt4 ай бұрын
This is great info ! Thanks for sharing

Hi there! I find the derwent inktense pencils not really permanent after they dried. Only when you really "washed off" the pencil marks completly. If the marks are still to be seen, you can easily go in again with water and colour will come of.
@KittehNow3 ай бұрын
Yes, my inktense pencils re wet....I sure wish they didn't. I use them on watercolor paper...cold pressed.

@incognitoedc4 ай бұрын
My understanding is you should not dip the pencils directly in water because you do not want the wood to get wet. Try using your pencils on a pallette instead of directly on paper and you will achieve what I believe are much better results, especially if you are doing illustration work such as botanicals. I've been using Albrect Durer pencils exclusively now for about 6 months.

⚠️ “It is not recommended to dip the tips of Faber-Castell watercolor pencils into water as it will compromise the integrity of the pencil. The lead and wood become soft and will become brittle which will then break easily. Humidity changes the structure of the lead and makes it crumble. The wood will soak up the water and the pencil cannot be sharpened any longer.” Faber-Castell USA
