The scene in which Macaulay interrogates Buck planted the seed for Home Alone. It was there that they reckoned he could carry a movie. The scene plays out almost identically, but with the roles reversed, in Home Alone when Kevin goes shopping.

And the mail slot scene also seemed to inspire Home Alone, when Miles saw the random three guys.

One of my favorite behind the scenes stories about this movie was that, during the rapid fire question scene, John Candy had the questions on note cards stuck on his forehead so Macaulay Culkin could just read them off.

I found it incredibly emotional. The actor they got to play Tia was perfect for the role. She is able to convey a wide range of emotions with just a look. My favorite is that look she gave to UB at the end to conveyed a depth of love and respect hits me every time. Her pissed off look was penetrating too. Awesome reaction of one of my most favorite movies I never get tired of watching.

There were a few young actors in the late 80s and early 90s who could do that. Anna Chlumsky, the actress from My Girl, was really underrated in the early 90s. Even Macauley Culkin could act when given the opportunity to do more than just be the kid who acted like an adult.

Laurie Metcalf who plays the feisty neighbor has four Emmy awards, was nominated for an Oscar for Lady Bird, and won 2 Broadway Tony awards. Very accomplished! One of John Hughes best films. John Candy’s gf in the film was also in Field of Dreams playing Kevin Costner’s wife.

I grew up with SCTV, and being from Edmonton made it extra special. As a kid, it was something else watching the tv and seeing these legends walk the same streets. John Candy came into my life early, and he has stayed in my hearts and thoughts since. John was like an Uncle to me, and this movie probably had a lot to do with that. I have a very fond memory of seeing "Uncle Buck" with my dad, and those memories are a balm for bad days...Every person who met John Candy has said that there was no facade with him. He was indeed the most loving, compassionate, and funny person to ever live. Before his passing, John had wanted to explore more serious roles, like the one he'd played in Oliver Stone's "JFK". The possibilities were endless and we can only dream of where he'd be now. Far too often, the great ones are taken much too soon, and John Candy was the best. I miss him a lot.

So glad you got around to Buck! This and PT&A are two of my favorite comedies of all time, not just fav Hughes movies, mostly because of John Candy and the great storylines with heart. My college roommate and I watched them several times each semester -they still hold up great, and we often quote lines even today. Probably Culkin's best work as a kid imo (like him better here as cute and quirky than in Home Alone, where he's more of a smartass/bart simpson type stuck in an improbable premise) Anyway, as always, great reaction and editing to hit the highlights.

This is definitely one of my favorite childhood movies. I have my own Uncle Buck, though he's called Uncle Ron 😆 Slightly different life situation (he's married with kids) but all the rest of the personality stuff is exactly the same. So, he has issues 😂 and he's pretty lucky my aunt puts up with them, but he's a very loving, good person. (He's just quite immature in some ways lol) But he'd always stand up for and protect us kids, especially us little girls. In fact, he still thinks of us as little and despite being 60, having had 4 heart attacks and surgeries, will still be like, "WHO TREATED YOU BAD?! DO I GOTTA HURT SOMEONE?!" If we've had a bad day 🤣(even though most of us "kids" are 30-40 years old now 😆)

1. Many say Planes Trains and Automobiles but I say this was his best. 2, Of course it's Chicago. This is a John Hughes film. 3. Macaulay Culkin got the "Home Alone" gig because Landis loved him in this. 4. That's the same High School used by Hughes for "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Beuller's Day Off". 5. Making a stack of pancakes that big would take A LOT of work. 🙄 6. Tell me you didn't enjoy this. I dare you 😁

I saw a short documentary on John Candy's life and at the end there was a clip of the last still frame in this movie. It was such a perfect ending but heart wrenching at the same time and made you miss him even more. Funny how you can say that about actors you don't even know. But I think that's a testament to his body of work and more importantly to him as a person.

"Do you think she hates me?" "With a passion." "Really? Do you think it's the hat?" "No." "No? A lot of people hate this hat. It angers a lot of people, just the sight of it. Ah, I'll tell you a story about that on the way to school." Fun Fact: Despite their characters not getting along for the majority of the film, off-camera Jean Louisa Kelly got along very well with John Candy and said she was honored to work with someone she considered a legend. Culkin Candy Fact: This the first of 3 movies Macaulay Culkin and John Candy would star in together. The others being Home Alone (1990) where they had no screen time together and Only The Lonely (1991) where Culkin only had a small cameo. Location Location Fact: Almost every set was built in a local high school gymnasium, including the two-story Russell house.

This is definitely one of my favorite movies, it's funny because it wasn't until later in life that I realize that John Hughes did some of my favorite movies. Macaulay was great in this and the sister was played by Gaby Hoffman, who went on to do a bunch of other movies. I would say other favorite John Candy films for me are The Great Outdoors and Nothing But Trouble both with Dan Aykroyd. Also saw someone recommend Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead...I second that recommendation, love that movie!!

Just found your channel and subscribed...great stuff here! Looking forward to perusing all your videos. ☺ I'd have to say Uncle Buck is my favorite John Candy movie followed very closely by Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I like just about every movie with John Candy, he's so great. My other favorites though are: Summer Rental The Great Outdoors Only the Lonely Cool Runnings Delirious Armed and Dangerous Speed Zone (this is an obscure movie and is a loose sequel to the movies Cannonball Run 1 and 2, it is not really a good movie but it's a guilty pleasure for me and at least all the John Candy scenes, in my opinion, really are very good.) Then there are movies that aren't John Candy movies but he plays a significant supporting character...he's been in some iconic movies...fantastic movies: Splash Spaceballs Stripes Then there are the movies where he's had even smaller roles, not much more than cameos, (like in Home Alone) but in each one he makes these movies that are already very good even better by being in them. I'm not going to name them though...there's a few of them and they are all classics and I wouldn't be surprised if you reacted to them eventually...so I'll let you be pleasantly surprised whenever he pops up in movies like that. Lastly, if you liked Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, I strongly and highly recommend another John Hughes movie called "Dutch". No John Candy in this one, but the story has almost the same feels as Planes...I consider Planes, Trains, and Automobiles the best Thanksgiving movie there is, but Dutch is a wonderful second best. I don't know if you are from the U.S. or Canada but either way Thanksgiving is coming up soon... Best Regards!

When this movie was made, it was typical to not have complete closure. In this case, we can logically assume that Buck has made amends with his famiky because he did so well with the kids. John Candy was great in anything he did. One you might look at is Stripes, where he is a supporting actor but managed to almost steal the show; Considering Stripes was a Bill Murray/Harold Ramis vehicle, that is saying something! Other thoughts: The Clapper wasn't popular, but the hilariously bad commercial for it was! Using it in this movie is a way to show Buck is a bit tacky. Home Alone came after Uncle Buck, but this role is what won it for M.C. The actress who played Marcy also played Jackie in Roseanne and reprised the role for The Connors. She was also Sheldon's mother in Big Bang Theory, and I think she was in a Louie C.K. series on Netflix.

I saw a comment asking you to check out "Summer Rental" and please, you are the only reactor we can count on. It may not be the most well known movie, but it is absolutely worth watching. I regret losing my VHS copy of it a few years ago. Kerri Greene, who starred in Goonies as Andy the cheerleader, also stars in "Summer Rental". She was my first celebrity crush ever. Greene also starred in a wonderful film with Cory Haim, Charlie Sheen, and Winona Ryder called "Lucas". I'd suggest checking that one out if you can even find it.

John Hughes's career had an interesting trajectory. He went from teen movies to focusing on adults at the end of the 1980s and then to kids. I still refer to FedEx as Federal Express sometimes without thinking about it. I remember this being one of the earliest mainstream, studio movies with rap songs throughout the movie and in the commercials. I don't think it was intended to be that way but I think the scene where Miles(Macauley Culkin) sees the 3 strange men outside of the letter box is great foreshadowing to Home Alone which was also a John Hughes movie. I don't know if Hughes was already working on the script for Home Alone at the time Uncle Buck was being made but it almost works out like he meant to do a bit of foreshadowing there.

@jeremygeorgia4943
@jeremygeorgia4943 Жыл бұрын
Yup, the freeze frame ending is always effective. He also had a ring on. I think, this is my favorite Candy film. I always enjoyed seeing him on SCTV. Until this point, I really wasn't that "filmiliar" (It started out as a typo, then I ran with it) with his film work. Though he had been in some things previously, his role in "Vacation" really didn't make an impact on me, and "Blues Brothers" missed my radar entirely. I ended up seeing Planes/Trains after Uncle Buck, so this one made the biggest impact on me. I am actually very surprised that there's anyone around that remembers FedEx as Federal Express. I thought it was mainly WikiGeeks that would know that, these days. Uncle Buck was one of those big screen sitcom/dramas, that was funny, without being mean spirited. That's a bit rare these days. It seems like the latest trend in comedies is mean-spirited hyper self awareness. If you'd like to see more Federal Express in a comedy film, you might like "Crazy People". It stars Dudley Moore, of all people. He was bigger in the 70's and 80's. As usual, the review/reaction was great. They do keep improving as well. Some reactors try to guess ahead too much, and they end up seemingly sabotaging their enjoyment of films, in exchange for "Being Right". You seem to be able to keep your mind from being over active, while still being insightful. There are a few time, where you seem to get to the "Punchlines" ahead of the film, but they are rare. I appreciate you showing restraint in calling out your conclusions.
@JayBondReacts
@JayBondReacts Жыл бұрын
"Filmiliar" should actually become used on a daily basis from here on out. Haha Haven't heard of Crazy People, but I'll look into that one. As far as guessing what's to come, that's so hard to manage so I understand why people do it. I arguably do it too much when watching horror movies which has made me dislike certain movies I would have otherwise enjoyed. Thanks for another great comment and for sharing your feedback. Always appreciated.

"The Good Son" was fun in how everything in it was done to counter Culkin's kiddie reputation which had gotten a backlash by that point. He's smoking. He's cussing. I remember the audience's reaction at the end.

Unfortunately I can't do that one as I've seen it over 20 times and can basically quote it at this point. 😂 Fun fact: There was a time Felissa Rose (Angela) and I were con buddies. I sat at her table and drank beers with her and later partied with her. She's the best!

Not my favorite movie (though in the top 25.) Not even my favorite comedy. But Buck Russell is my all-time favorite character. And John Candy is easily in the top 5 comedic actors ever!
