This might be a case of China not having a system of joint custody when people divorce. 90% of the time custody is granted to the mother. The parent who is awarded custody can legally cut off the other parent if they want to. It seems that Johnny sees his son, even if it is not as much as he likes. He might not legally have the right to bring the child with him. That is why he feels bad about going to the US. It's not like he's ditching his kid on the street in order to do cosplay.
