During my PhD (they work a bit differently in the UK to in most countries, as I understand it, as you _just_ do research and then wrap up by writing your thesis), _every_ other member of my research group of 12-15 people, depending on the year, was Chinese and, while their English was always excellent considering they were only in the UK for the duration of the PhD, their grammar would and syntax when speaking would be very different from formal English in a pretty consistent way... ...and you'd be shocked how quickly I found myself talking the same way while I was in the office, initially without even realising I was doing it. It honestly made communication super-easy because it meant I wouldn't slip into my usual Northern Irish colloquialisms, which even the most thorough English class are unlikely to teach.

Just because youtube commenters often get the joke, he's just kidding about the free-range chicken. Give the chickens a good life and they will taste better. In Vancouver, a Southeast Asian-influenced restaurant always used free range chickens and they were not as chubby (because they run around), but they were also very yellow. Great flavour. Weird that the Sorted free-range chicken was so round. I'm used to them being leaner looking. Oh well.

Free-range chicken refers to a particular chicken breed found in Malaysia, known as kampong (village) chicken. They used to be free range (running around the villages), and are still farmed in a way that lets them run around. You're right that they're very yellow and the drumsticks are very long and sleek.
@janusjones65193 жыл бұрын

I'll have to try this! I love chicken and rice just in general but I've never tried this! 🤣 I used to get talked to for eating with a spoon always in a private family setting. Classically it's a faux pas and wouldn't be acceptable in public. However they aren't using knives so...😕

I know Nigel's videos are comedies but a lot aren't - one thing that I don't like about food video review videos is that everyone makes things in a different way. Liz makes it one way, but other Singaporeans will make it a different way. Guaranteed there are Singaporeans who make it exactly the way Sorted did. I'm not bothered by this particular video cause Uncle Roger is a character but it definitely bothers me in videos where the people are serious about their criticisms. And the thing is, some groups are exempt. Every Italian grandmother has a different way to make each pasta dish. An Italian will never say she's doing it wrong. If you as a non-Italian do it the same way as a real Italian grandmother, 90% of Italy will tell you that you did it wrong and maybe insult you for it (especially if you're American) I brought it up on your comment because her recipe isn't necessarily the "right" or "correct" one, there are many ways to do it. Hell, they criticized how they plated the rice, but look at her photo in the book - she didn't use the bowl method either.

As a Hainanese, I feel the way they cook this dish in Singapore or Malaysia is pretty different from how people in Hainan cook it after watching this wejio, now I get why people in Hainan says it's actually a Malaysian/Singaporean dish😂 Although in Hainan we don't call it Hainanese Chicken Rice, it's Wenchang Ji(Wenchang Chicken) and the chicken rice, and you order the chicken and the rice separately. I've went to Singapore before to visit my aunt and had a few Hainanese Chicken Rice during my stay there. Personally I think the rice is good because I like Thai jasmine rice better than the Hainan rice, but as for the chicken I really don't like the texture of it. To me Wenchang chicken in Hainan is definitely the best.

Shallot, garlic, spring onion, salt. Every Asian cuisine need that, whether you are Arab, Sino (Viet-Chinese-Korean-Japanese), Hindustani (Indian subcontinent), Persian-Turkic, Malay-Indo, Muang (Thai, Cambodes, Lao), etc. It's the basic core.
