In one episode of Australian Masterchef (I think it was the first or second season) one of the guys got a beer from the 'shop', not to use in his dish, but just so he could drink it because he knew he'd be waiting around.

12:36 This guy wins everything from me. In S3 of Shokugeki no Soma, Soma goes up against a popular and highly-regarded upperclassman who specializes in spicy Cantonese food, in a contest to try and attract more people to buy from their food stall, but he does the anime protagonist thing of trying to compete by making similar style food and just gAnBaRu his way to victory. Like, he's literally set up across the walkway from his competition, also making spicy food. It bugged me so much that such a clever character until now hadn't thought to instead make a sweet dessert for the tons of people that would have just eaten very spicy food and might want, oh, I don't know, something cold, sweet, and dairy to soothe the burn. And here a real-life guy on a Korean cooking show had the noggin to take that into consideration.

He planned really smartly because just based on the context of this show, contestants come up as they are ready to present. Meaning his plan worked because he could interject with the intent of his dessert to bring down the umami overload that the judges would be likely experiencing. Had the order of presentation be at the judge's whim, then it would have been a gamble instead. This was also exemplified in Shokugeki no Soma where Eizan Etsuya thought he could mess with the judge's taste receptors due to using artichoke, but Soma instead capitalised on Eizan going first and used him as a stepping stone.
