Parents divorced when I was 4. My dad gave my mom a chance to be in our lives, she chose not to. But our dad, he raised me & my sister by himself he got some help every now & then, no child support. Took us to & from school, whatever school activities that schools was doing he was there. He even had to work nights for a few years, something that he really didn't want to do but did it. Sad to say we grew up without a mom and times were tough, but we pulled through because of him. I love you dad.

Same here man, my dad raised us both alone mom was never around till he was bedridden. Worked every single day until the cancer overwhelmed him. Wish I had've gotten to spend more time with him while he was around. This years 10 years since he passed in July, fighting back the tears writing this as a grown ass man. Cherish every day like you may not have a tomorrow.

Song reminds me so much of my baby brother. He had his first child at 16, and immediately got a job on a shrimp boat to provide for his new family. On his 17th birthday, our father signed for him to enlist into the Marine Corps. He did three tours in Iraq, and was even wounded in fallujah. After the service he got a job offshore drilling, and worked countless hours every week to build a comfortable civilian life for his family. I watched as he deteriorated when he got sick. He beat it, and went right back to work to continue to provide. He overcame so much in life only to be hit by a stray bullet at a gas station half a mile from our fathers house in 2014. Rest in Paradise baby bro u were double the man anyone I know could ever be in half the time! You were always able to keep the wolves away. I’m so proud to be your big brother. Miss you so much man.

and bad things don't happen to bad people... There should be more people like your brother, there are many people who lack the strength or motivation to go ahead and fight, especially to fight for the family, without it and without someone to guide them, the children get lost along the way. Rest in peace.

Working 7-12’s as a pipe fitter, or 7-13’s as a foreman on turnaround in refineries and chemical plants all over the country was normal 8 months out of the year for me. ADANAC Sadly alot of people don't ever realize this. Most kids without a father growing up were told that there father leftt. That isn't even remotely true. The majority were forced out of their homes by government, which got going from their wife. Sadly the kids are brought up believing falsehoods. They don't know there dad was providing for them since they were born, and after the divorce. The old days were different, but now you're supposed to take certain things for granted, while propping up mediocre behavior. Nowadays just being a mother deems you the right to claim yourself a great, or, good one. As a father if you don't do half of the inside work,( as well as all the outside work he was already doing) then he is somehow lazy, or terrible. As Rodney Dangerfield always said "No respect I tell ya, no respect". No wonder marriage rates are plummeting. Good for you for realizing that though. It most certaintly is something all fathers hope their kids will realize someday. Be grateful for knowing that truth.

It doesn't have to be this way. We have all been deceived by an illusion that life for the majority is always a struggle. This is so far from the truth yet we accept that we have to work for some corporation and we accept what they want to pay. Their share holder dividends should be a huge clue to the amount of money they make off the poor they give bread crumbs to for their blood and tears. This can change. Start talking about it. The more we bring awareness out, the faster things will change. Tgere is enough resources in this world to take care of double the population in excess of having too much.

Makes me cry everytime. My grandpa died to ALS after a fall triggered a calcium deposit in his neck. Left my dad two farms at the age of 26. When I was 8, my mom got a call that dad fell from the top of a combine and split his back on the corn head. Like in the song, my Dad recovered, but I'll never forget that day. This song reminds me of my father. Waking up at 4 30 am, driving almost 4 hours every day to go to a factory assembly line. Punching in and out, thankful for dinner ready at 7 pm. In bed by 9. For years he did this, for us 3 kids, and his high school sweetheart. Never did I hear a word of complaint. But I felt the calluses on his hands. I heard the exhaustion in his voice as he sang me to sleep to the tune of songs like If I had a hammer, all the leaves are brown, and paperback writer. As a child I didn't know the metaphor of this song, keep the wolves away. Now as a father, I understand. My hands are rough. Bones weary. I'm there for my son, and my old man. To keep the wolves at bay.

It has been Impossible to keep my Wolves away. They broke into my house when I laid dying on the floor of my living room, for 10 days, due to a doble vascular accident. The looting lasted all night long; they, including neighbors, took everything from my house and my American Blazer truck. The didn't stop until the THUGS threw up my little dogs to the street past midnight of May the 2nd, 2019! ..Me, am still alive, but bitten my Snakes and Wolves. The wounds and the scars will last a lifetime!.... The Griffin from The End of the World.

I see the company man show his colors all the time. Luckily we have each other’s backs and we go home everyday to our loved ones safe and sound. I'm a 34 year old father of 2. I work in a coal power station. Hats off to anyone that fights off their wolves everyday! I fight a pack of wolves every second of everyday. I've been struggling to stay sober bc I've wasted to many years of my life running with the same wolves that now have turned on me. Im blessed that my father is and has been the rock in my life. Guilt overcomes me when thoughts burn through my mind of all the wasted memories that I destroyed by worrying about when I needed my fix. Now that I'm able to clearly think, my dad has moved on to Texas and it's not as simple to just stop and visit. I hate myself for wasting all the golden opportunities that I had of making memories with him. Ever since I became a father to my son, i can only dream of always being there for him like my dad was for me. I hurt so bad in my soul bc I know that all the time thats past can never be presented to me again. God bless everyone of u! Stay strong and don't let the wolves blow down the house that u created! Thanks for taking the time to read this novel!

My dad left at sunrise, usually came home at sunset. Not "blue collar," just a humble librarian at the public libraries. We were pretty much poor, but didn't think of it that way. Dad worked, but only had one job except when he picked up projects, and I am grateful to him for showing me what a man really is, but not holding three jobs like some neighbors did so their wives could have fancy furniture and get their hair done every week at a salon (and grateful to my mom for not pushing him to do that or demanding it).

@@brianmackey6923 I couldn't guess at your father's demons, but a man who walks away from his family has some. At the moment he left, he thought that his family would be better off without him. He's felt grief all his life for what he did to you. And he knows that there's at least one man in the world who would kill him if he got the chance. Nothing he could do now could redeem him in your eyes and heart, but doing that to his family scared his soul.

Wish I could say I was a mom who had SOMEBODY while ALL the struggles are real..mental, physical, emotional, and fucking unbelievable the hell I'm left to deal with SOLO. YOLO. And God gave his greatest battle to his strongest soldier to deal with the devil(maybe even 3 lol). But today I still stand maybe not as tall, but counting my many blessings. The heart hurts, for many reasons, all being my own stupid fault. That just means the devil needs to grow a few inches here and there and THEN come talk to me. Cuz death already has me knocking on heaven's door and through the tears I just laugh without fear. Only sorrow for what more I could have been..possibly still could be. Maybe 1 dayday. Yes sir. My dad sacrificed his health and his happiness working himself to exhaustion every day for my family so my mom could stay home and nurture my brother (RIP, hung himself last year) and me. He never let on how tired he was or how much strain it put on him. Now that I'm the breadwinner for my family, I do the same thing because I learned it from him. I work long hours every day, for months, years at a stretch "to keep the wolves away" and so my wife can be home with our kids. I consider it a privilege to work so hard and be so tired, because I know I'm doing my best for my family, and setting an example of how a man leads and takes care of his wife and children.

Damn this song hit close to home. My dad worked at a uranium mill for nearly 15 years and has some gnarly scars from acid burns. I remember being really little and him coming home from work with his arm bandaged and him cutting them off and seeing just black goo on his arm and he just did a shot and grabbed a razor blade and pair of pliers and just started cutting out the burn so the acid would stop burning. This was before we had medical insurance, so a bunch of stitches would be way less than a bunch of stitches and surgery. He had been burned over a dozen times since that first one, with one being so bad that the hospital had to do skin graphs. Since then he's worked as a welder, working 2 hours from home and working 16 hour days to keep the lights on and food on the table. Now he works as a railroad engineer and 3 years ago tore his labrum in his shoulder and his bicep tendon throwing a frozen rail switch, he's had 3 surgeries to fix it, and it's still not healed. He sleeps like 3 or 4 hours a night from constantly bouncing back and forth from graveyards to days for 20 years, He's the toughest man I know, and I could fill a damn book with stories about him, I thank the Lord for him every day. This song is the only one that has ever brought a tear to my eye from the words. It really hit close to home for me.

My dad is 84 years old and just retired this past year. He’s a mechanic. He worked several jobs, including time in the military, putting a roof over our head, food in the fridge and shoes on our feet. Went to church every Sunday. He never complained. Got me my first job as a porter at age 11 and allowed me to keep the money I earned unlike his childhood working in a coal truck at age 9. He reminded me of his childhood growing up in a cold water flat and a community bathroom, which he said was an improvement over grandpas who slept 5 to a room, on a floor next to a coal furnace. We had tough times and good times through the years, but he instilled in me the principals, of hard work, sacrifice, responsibility, God and Country. Moms been dead for over 5 years now, my sister died over 15, way to early. Raised her boy on my own since his daddy was in jail. My father nodded when I stepped up, but that was it. Spend more time with him now and understand him a lot better. Still doesn’t say too much but doesn’t have to. We spend time working on little things together like fixing a lawnmower or a pipe or just sitting on the porch. In my fifties now and have a boy of my own and I hope I’m around long enough to teach him the things my daddy taught me. Those lessons you can’t get in no school. This song and a few others like it makes me think about all of this and for that I’m grateful.

I'm happy to provide for my wife and 3 kids every day in any way they need! I feel it in me that it's my job to take care of them. If i didnt, I wouldn't expect much in the way of love or appreciation because I wouldn't be doin my most important job. Real men understand this and are happy to work all day every day if that's what it takes to provide for his family, and still find time for a meal, or a laugh, or an outting, or a shoulder to cry on, then have a beer and spend time with his wife before bed....(we squeeze in those things and so much more). I am happy to have this role, I hope I do it well!

This tune gives me goose-bumps everytime I hear it and by the end my eyes are always sweating. I had a hard working father who sold his life to the Steel Mills in Gary Indiana and without his love I wouldnt be who I am today. Cheers to my father Douglas Goodfellow and to my Mother for loving him.

This song got me. As a husband and a father this is what we do, and a lot of time we get little to no recognition for it. We fight, struggle and sacrifice for the ones we love. If you do it right no one notices and if you do it wrong everybody does.

Reading through the comments really touches my heart, so many awesome stories of love and perseverance. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏼❤️

I worked at a drywall plant for over 12 years. Worked swing shift and went months without an off day. Now I work at small laid back chemical plant loading trucks. They tell me I do the work 5 men couldn't do. And everytime they do I quietly whistle this song to myself. For all my brothers and sisters out there working swing or just straights, you'll make it. Love yall!

Im away from home, 9 months out of the year! I have a beautiful wife and four amazing little ones at home! I work 14/7 hitches, sometimes 18 hrs shifts for 14 straight. This song hits home, as I had an amazing dad, who succomed to cancer from chemicals he was exposed too. He welded for a living, constructing jack ship legs. I would see him maybe 6 weeks out of the yeat. But, he was an amazing dad. I am just grateful I am able to pass down what he selflessly passed down to me!

My 7th grade year my dad caught fire in the bottom of a tank in a ship yard. He spent 100 days in the mobile burn center with a 20% percent chance of survival. Now I’m 19 and running the roads and this was my first time hearing this song. It hits pretty close to home.

Lyrics Took my first breath, where the muddy Brazos, spills into the gulf of Mexico Where the skyline's colored by chemical plants, t'put bread on the table of the working man Where the working man does his best to provide, safety and shelter for kids and a wife Givin' a little of his soul every day, making over time to keep the wolves away Well I was barely thirteen when the company man, tried to dig my daddy's grave It happened on a French owned tanker ship, spilling poison into Galveston Bay Where the liquid fire filled his lungs and his eyes, silenced any mortal cries Cold and the grip of death stinging pain, he fought like hell to keep the wolves away For the next few years dad was sick as a dog, but he made a recovery just to spite the odds Settlement came and we moved out of town, where the sky isn't heavy with refinery clouds Yeah he's still alive he's doing good he's in his fifties But the moneys running out, and he's pinching for pennies So I'm goin' for broke with every song I play, 'cause now it's my turn to keep the wolves away

It's all about the Benjamin's. You can have the best song and music but if you don't have the money to promote it. You're not going to make it. Unfortunately that's what happened to this song and band. I've seen songs that don't have anywhere near 84 million views like this one but got more publicity. Such a shame!

Have to be willing to sell your soul to the devil to make it in the industry to be promoted. And once they own you, they OWN you, your money, and all the music you make for them. I hope to see more good musicians stay away from the evil industry that uses them to push and sell agendas to the masses.
