The Junkyard supply of Big Block Chrysler engines may have dried up years ago, but there are still plenty to be found out there in old RV's, Dump Trucks and Irrigation pumps. Here's how to tell them apart along with what will, and will not work in your hot rod.

A couple of things: The reason the industrial motors had a different water pump setup was to elevate the fan. This was done to get the fan closer to the center of the large rads. The Charger, don't cut the frame, take it to a body shop and have them pull it on a bench. This will bring everything back into shape.

Another issue to watch out for is the industrial cranks like in irrigation engines and other similar applications. They will have eight bolt drive flanges but they are not the Hemi/six pack eight bolt pattern. This means that you will need to find a different crank, but hey, cheap big block mopar engines.

@@eddieb4227 you are incorrect. Some industrial engines had a weird eight bolt crank flange that's not Hemi. Not saying they can't have a crank swap, only that they MIGHT have a crank that's incompatible with automotive applications.

@@kart70 I'm not incorrect on anything of what I said. I did not disagree with what you said nor did I say it was a hemi. Just stated that some of engines were designed to be left hand turning engines, which the crank stayed the same and the camshaft was designed to run backwards.

Back in the 1980's a farmer bought a 440 from a salvage yard for his farm machinery. The dealer wanted a fortune to rebuild the factory engine. Farmer got pissed and bought the 440 without even knowing it would fit. He another guy worked at, welded some brackets and made it fit. Something about radiator hose, they had to siamese two or three hoses to make it reach. But it worked and it had more power than the factory engine.

I just love these old 66' - 67 Chargers. My brother got one for his first car back in about 1974. It was a 1967 with the 2 barrel 383. It was blue with a black interior. The previous owner had put slotted mags on it. The 4 bucket seats and the front and back consoles were so cool to me. The instrument panel with all of the gauges and the 150 mph speedometer were impressive to 14 year old me. At night the gauges gave off a cool blue light at night that was so bad ass looking. I still think that body style is one of the best to ever come out of Detroit. Even now when I look at cars for sale I make a point to look at these Chargers.

The later 413’s were under bored 440’s, I have one that was safely bored .162” over and sonic checked. I also have one stamped 440 but still has its factory 4.185” bore. And they did make headers, a lot of motor homes had a tube header that fits the industry flange.

I told him you are buying the dam boat! why he says ? I went back cleared the junk off the floor boards and got the floor lifted up ! there sat 2 426 hemi marine engines ideling away !I told him shut up say nothing to the sales woman buy it now! the 2 engines are worth more than the boat all day long! so he made the deal! all said and done paper work signed! it was his! one of the guys that worked there when we loaded it on the trailer which was a piece of work in it self!! why would you buy that piece of crap ! thats when the guy who bought it opened his mouth and told the guy about the hemi"s all tho I told him to shut up! we got out of there before the shit hit the fan! and the guy run to the owners about it fun ride towing home behind my ram half ton truck! shows to go you never know where you find gold!

I have 1960’s 361 industrial engine that came with the 413 industrial heads. But Tony you left out the 8 bolt flanges that they come with if they were in a medium duty. The crank will not work with a normal big block bell housing. The flange is about a 1/2” further out, and has 8 bolts so the crank can’t be used for a normal car/truck. If you watch the Roadkill episode with that 60’s D100 where they grab that big block bell housing, it’s actually the industrial bell housing that will not work with a regular crank. A divider plate is part of those bell housings for that 1/2” out flange. Also has a hydraulic clutch master cylinder bolted to it. So if you see six bolts you’re good, 8 bolts you will need a crank. Also a good identification for the medium duty blocks with the 8 bolt flange is an large letter T cast on the side of the block. My 361 has the T upside down, but it shows it’s a “truck” block for the bigger trucks. And there also is a 1 through 5 number cast next to the T. As far as I know the higher the number the stronger the block. Example my 361 is a T-4 block. You should only see this on the 361 and 413 engines.

I have a picture somewhere of a 413 modified to run standing on end. They claim it ran like 20-30 thousand hours (there's 8,760 hours in a year) on an irrigation well. Never went deeper than points and a valve lash on it. My boss had a pair of slant sixes on an irrigation pump. Someone would come out to work on the well or the sprinklers, and spend a half hour fiddling with vacuum gauges trying to get them pulling the load equally. He shut them back down til dark, and when he fired them up, set the throttles by the glow of the mufflers.

@@LongIslandMopars just be careful the domes aren't so high they affect air flow into the head or block the flame travel. in the old days folks would cut a notch but sometimes what you get in compression you lose to poor burn quality...and then you reduce ign. timing to avoid detonation on top of it

@@albertgaspar627 Thanks very much for that insight. Maybe that's why the engine builder I worked with convinced me to just keep it stock with the mild Isky cam. If I ever decided to go with higher compression, he recommended custom Ross pistons. I greatly appreciate your feedback.
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 3 жыл бұрын
@@LongIslandMopars glad to help. the only real benefit to a domed piston is it adds more surface area to be pressed against. but it also adds weight to the piston, which has an effect on piston speed and that affects how well the intake charge is "sucked" into an expanding volume of cylinder (as the piston races away on the intake stroke from TDC) and how fast it gets pushed out by the rising piston on the exhaust stroke. and there is an issue if the camshaft has a large valve lift--that dome better get the heck out of the way! too much duration in the cam and it bleeds off the mechanical compression in the chamber--that's why the rowdy idling long duration cam really wants a higher compression. The best choice in a perfect world is a small combustion chamber--less of the combustion work is done filling up a large chamber on a cylinder head that isn't supposed to move at all--combined with a flat top piston that is supposed to move. I'll agree with your engine builder since at 273 cid, there's not a lot of low RPM torque to lose. Ask your engine builder or cam company about "variable duration lifters". Crane and Rhoads sell them, so you may have to go with their cams. In a general explanation, they bleed off cam lift (and thus duration) below about 3,000 RPM. so at the lower RPM (where you are cruising down the highway, running the AC, launching from a stoplight) a wilder (say, a muscle car grind like the D code 275 hp 273 engine's specs, compared to an "RV" cam for torque) cam mellows out. you'll lose the choppy idle, but can pick up a few miles to the gallon. Above 3,000 RPM or so, you get your wilder cam specs back, and the lifters are hydraulic but can go up to 6,500 rpm shift points. Rhoads lifters tend to click like solid lifters (compared to Crane's) and work better with the slower ramps that came on the old muscle car grinds. I have Crane's on an Olds 461 cid, 10:1 cr (needs 93 octane) and a .490 lift, 260 duration cam. with 3:1 rear gears, I can leave the manual valve body THM400 in 3rd gear and pull from a dead stop with a captive discharge ignition (fires the spark plug no matter what, a regular points may not like to get that much load, but i'm just saying what a variable duration lifter can accomplish on a large displacement engine.) If you're making the 273 a cruiser/daily driver, and want a little more umph above 3,000 rpm once you try out that mild cam...a bigger cam and variable duration lifters may just be a ticket for you. hope i didn't just give you too much to chew on :) go with the cam and compression your builder is considering, and tune it well. that could be everything you want out of the engine. but if you decide a little more...those lifters may help you go bigger on the cam and not worry about losing low RPM torque or needing a stiffer rear gear to launch (if you have a choice of automatics, i find the torqueflight 904 to eat less hp than the vaunted 727, and you probably have it behind the 273 anyway. In 1980 i think, they swapped the first gear ratio from 2.45 to 2.74 and called it the A998/999 trans. this gets into another field of modification, and on some engines the drop in ratios between gears just makes the car run up to redline and then fall out of its powerband in the next gear and have to build itself back up again. but, enough "drawing out on a cocktail napkin" wild ideas. typically when you want more power out of a 273, you go up to a 318, and that will also help make power in the lower RPM ranges. at least you have the nice adjustable valve rocker arms--folks used to search junkyards for the 273 to get 'em :)

@@albertgaspar627 All great info for me to process if I ever want to try and wrangle more from it. I wanted to keep the car completely original, so when I inherited the car upon the passing of my dad, I rebuilt it in 2013. It's a 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 SE that my parents bought new. It remains a stock 2bbl with the only mod being an Isky E-4 cam. It still runs solid lifters with the adjustable rockers. Sucks down gas like a big block, which I'm sure the cam is to blame for. The 2.94 rear gear is in a 741 housing; if I ever wake it up with a 3.23, I expect I'll have to go to a 489 rear. It has the original 904 trans that was rebuilt by a friend in our local club and is perfect. I drive it on weekends and take it to cruise meets. Keeping the memory of my dad alive.

@AaBb , pulling it straight would be a good thing, but this 'Frame' is actually a UNI-BODY design of sheet metal no thicker than 0.062" in the places where the buckling has taken place.... The floor-pan & frame-stubs that are spot-welded together, are probably fatigued and/or cracked where the buckling took place... The repair needs to include doublers that are attached to the areas where the bucking took place, after it has been straightened... Lots of crazy thing the gov spent in the name of keeping us safe in the 50' through early 70's. Any how The 440 based ones are kind of obsurd but still cool thats a lot of motor for a siren lol. But heck gas was what 28 cents a gallon in the 60's and they only tested them once a year lol. Those air raid sirens are deafeningly loud though up close and at full tilt we could hear one we did not very loud but clearly at roughly a mile away.

@ Adam Culbertson... Tony had an episode that talked about doing this, reversing the orientation of the piston installations in reference to which side faced towards the front of the engine... Mostly done on Pistons with flat-tops and crown shapes that do not interfere with the valves or combustion chamber... Why? Because some Pistons had the pin position slightly off-set, apparently to quiet the engine down... So Tony was saying that reversing the orientation of the Pistons could increase the power output, and make the engine more efficient... How? Presumably, because of better connecting rod geometry on the power stroke, and increased dwell-time the fuel has to burn and create pressure for the power stroke... A very interesting concept that was brought out into the open by Tony-here on You Tube AND in the David Vizard book 'How to build Horsepower', and Smokey Yunick's book called 'Power Secrets'.... They found ways to get more power from stock parts... The reverse piston trick really revealed some amazing results on otherwise stock mild-mannered equipment that were Tested on the dyno's.... Good Stuff that is often overlooked otherwise...

My older sister ordered a Bronze 383/ 4 speed Charger black interior a month before they came out in '66 . At 5'3", 98 pounds, she could barely push in the clutch, LOL! I was 13 and thought she was the worlds coolest sister! It was really cool getting dropped off at the front door of the school every morning since my school was right on the way to work for her. Growing up in a Detroit Suburb, we weren't very far from Woodward Ave and of course she cruised with it. She dabbled in street racing but if she won. it was because someone had a 283 or just let her win. With her struggle with the clutch and the factory shifter, she wasn't really a contender... but she looked cool, the dual exhaust sounded good and people thought she was the Dodge girl from the comercials!! Anyways, she married a guy with a new black '68 383 Road Runner a few years later and blaa bla bla. I always loved the electroluminesent instrument cluster at night along with listening to her lear Jet 8 track with Jefferson Airplane, Beatles, Blues Magoos, Donovan, Yardbirds, etc, etc. playing from it.
