Many toilets have a single hole at the bottom of the toilet bowl (Siphon Jet Hole) which is a key part of a toilet flushing properly. Water should spurt through this hole when you flush the toilet pushing the water out the large opening to flush. This hole can become clogged with calcium and mineralization which impedes the flow of water causing problems with flushing (other toilet styles have this large hole at the rim which serves this same function).
Someone else has a video on the same issue
• Toilet Not Clogged But...
This article has a good diagram of the toilet showing the siphon jet hole (the article is explaining how to clean the rim jets, which are different than the siphon jet). Note that sometimes this "hole" may be set back in some toilets and not even obviously visible looking into the bowl.

The following are other potential flushing-related issues you can have with a toilet.
This youtube video explains how to clean out the jets around the rim of the toilet, which can be a source of flushing problems for a toilet as well.
• Slow Flushing Toilet? ...
CLR (brand) Calcium, Lime, Rust Remover is one commonly available product that can be used to clean the small jet holes.
There are also issues with the mechanics in the toilet tank that can cause issues with flushing. This video has a good overview of the typical issues you might face.
• Increase Toilet Flush ...
This isn't about flushing a toilet, but if you hear a hissing sound when your toilet is not flushing and you have a Korky Toilet Flush valve your problem might be from a worn rubber pad. This video explains the easy fix (it worked for me):

THANK YOU. I've had low water pressure for years and could never figure out why. I had a couple plumbers look at it before and they quoted outrageous prices (telling me I just needed a whole new toilet), so I gave up, and just kept pouring water in Everytime I flushed! Today, I can finally flush without the extra water. It's the little things that make us happy lol. What a great start to 2021! 😂

This was the video that pointed me to the REAL problem with my toilet. I had been considering getting a new toilet, and you saved me a ton of time and money. After cleaning the siphon jet (with the $5 auger from harbor freight, which worked great on rim jets too btw) my toilet went from not even flushing on the highest water setting to being fully reliable on the lowest setting. Quite an improvement, and I didn't get out anywhere near as much "dirt" as your video shows

Thank you for the solution to my problem! I had been attacking the issue as if it were caused by a clogged drain, when it turns out the problem was caused by clogged jet holes. They were clogged by the cleaning tabs that you stick inside of the bowl. Fun fact, my toilet doesn't have a jet hole in the bowl like yours, but rather jet holes located under the rim. I had to use a liquid bowl cleanser bottle with the tilted neck designed for spraying under the toilet rim. I filled the bottle with hot water and dish detergent. I then inserted the nozzle of the bottle into one of the jet holes. Upon squeezing the bottle, all of the gunk from the cleaning tabs started pouring out - solving the problem. Thanks again!

Yes! Yesterday we replaced the flapper and other parts, and adjusted settings but nothing worked. So we tried again, and again...and again. I was sure the problem wasn't in the tank at that point, so went to bed accepting that we'd have to call a plumber and possibly have our main line augered. I woke up, searched and found this video. And the sediment that came out was unbelievable! Still preparing myself to have to spend tons of money, I flushed. And it was beautiful! Wish I found your video sooner, but so thankful I found it when I did. I truly can't thank you enough!

I have been having a problem with the toilet tank bubbling when flushing and slow drain out. Tried everything till my dad, a jack of all trades said it could be that little hole in the bottom of the bowl needing scraped. So I was able to get my hand in there and actually scrape through with my finger nails and I got the hole opened!!! That was all it took! Flushing with NO BUBBLING IN TANK AND IT FLUSHES SO MUCH BETTER! I wish I had seen your video sooner, but thanks for educating and sharing your experience and advice! Bad plumbers who can't tell us toilet peons about this needing to be done for a better flush! It's not the drain or the vent on the roof but that hole needing scraped out! Thank you!!

Like the rest of your posters, I was referred to the rim jet for cleaning and for months wondered why not much help. Replaced flapper, handle and lift shaft, even had individual who poked a screwdriver into the BOTTOM JET- as with the rest of your readers, I had no idea that this could be completely clogged !! Why is there no description of BOTTOM JET calcification, what tool to use to scrape away, what product to use in the bowl for it to eat away at the calcified clog? These people, myself among them, had no idea of this hidden problem. A product describing its use for sale in the hardware store would sell like hot cakes and make the manufactures millions!! I used a short paring knife, after reaching in to inspect the small slit opening and realizing the near-total calcified clog still remained!! I have nearly half to go yet; large chunks lie behind the calcification adhering to the BOTTOM JET circular opening. Unbelievable. The CLR product says not to let it set for over 3 min? Which does nothing to remove the clog. The problems stems from not being aware of the TWO types of jets, rim and bottom. And living in a community which supplies very hard water without the info necessary other than water softeners to live with the problem.

Thank you man, worked great after cleaning. Turned off valve, cut a water bottle to fit the smallest part of the bowl and removed all the water and dried off with old rag. Used a long thick screw to poke at the build-up from the clean side, don't try to remove it in any other ways, this is by far the easiest. I also cleaned the part that goes to the sewer pipe and now all the inside looks brand new and the toilet flush perfectly. Just push lightly onto the toilet with the tip at a 25-ish degree angle and do small tap/stroke and you should see flakes coming off. Use your finger to feel the inside of the hole, it should be smooth entirely. Do your best, some parts are hard to reach. You can wear a long glove if you think it's gross, but you will probably clean your hand after anyway.... I washed my toilet with Ajax before doing this.

My toilet is about a year old, it's very clean, but I kept seeing something sticking out of that hole. Almost thought it was something growing in there. I put on a glove and used a wooden bbq skewers and poked and scraped. What came out looks exactly like yours, almost like grey sand. And when I got deep enough, a substantial chunk came out and water started flowing. I have a whole house water filter (so our toilets are literally filtered water) and we really don't have hard water in this area so I didn't expect this. I've recently had a musty mildew smell that I can't pinpoint. I think it had something to do with the water that was stagnant and not flowing out of that portion of the tank. Thanks for the video and info.

Thank you for passing along your observation. I just recently saw something strange with my toilet that may be related. Our toilet had not been flushing as strong (this is the toilet in the video). I reached into the siphon jet hole and there was like a blob of sand. It wasn't hard like the deposits I had scraped out in the past. I just wiggled my finger around in the hole and disrupted it and then it was moved out of the hole on the next flush. Strange. It was like the deposits glommed together, getting ready to stick to the side of the hole.

This green moss may be algae, from what I saw doing a search with "Algae Growth in a Toilet." Just from what I've read, this seems to be an issue with the tank and so it is different from the problem described in my video. The algae growth does impact flushing so that's not good. The articles mention using bleach or vinegar to treat it, which makes sense. I don't have any personal experience with this particular issue.

I don't know if CLR will help with this particular buildup. Maybe it would. As Jeremy commented just yesterday (see below), these deposits are pretty hard. They can be chipped out, but it takes some effort. The challenge with CLR would be getting it to that area at the bottom of the bowl. Flush the toilet with the intake water turned off to drain the bowl of most of the water and then pour CLR into the bowl. Maybe it would work, but given the larger size of this particular hole and the amount of buildup, it is probably faster to physically chip it out. The cause or source of the buildup in this area might be different depending on the different minerals and such in different water supplies. In our case, we don't flush "if it just yellow" so that contributes to buildup different than just water minerals. One piece of data about the buildup in my case is that I placed some of the material I removed in a bowl of white vinegar and this had no effect on it. It didn't disolve it or break it down at all. I point this out because vinegar is sometimes recommended to disolve mineral deposits in a shower head so the material in my toilet bowl at least was different than the typical shower head case.

Been trying to use Zep to clear the drain. It didn't work and also a toilet on the opposite wall was flushing fine and it was further away from the sewer drain out front. I poked a narrow brush that I use to clean out the hair in the sink drain and it brought up a lot of discoloration. So it is a clogged flush hole. Now, living in California, we use the "If it's yellow let it mellow" rule. So I think the calcium in the urine has aggravated the problem. I pour vinegar into the bowl and let it sit in the toilet for several hours to get out the visible stains, but it evidently wasn't getting the invisible areas. I have a question. Do you think it is a good idea to use a higher vinegar strength such as 30% to let sit in the toilets occasionally? Or can it damage the wax ring? Thanks for any input.

My video is about cleaning the siphon jet hole. The following article has a side view of a toilet and it shows the siphon jet hole at the bottom of the toilet (the holes around the rim are called rim jet holes). www.1tomplumber.com/clean-toilet-rim-jets/ It could be that some toilets don't have this siphon jet feature (I'm not a plumber or an expert so I'm not sure). This siphon jet hole is obvious on our toilet that I show in the video. For our toilet in the other bathroom the siphon jet hole is not visible looking into the bowl. It is recessed. I only know it's there by sticking my hand down into the bowl and feeling for it.

The tool I refer to in the video is a nail set tool (at time 0:53). A small screwdriver or other pointed, metal tool would work as well.

It's at the very bottom of the bowl at the front. I zoom in and point to it right at the beginning of the video. Not all toilets have this same hole. Yours may be a different design. Some toilets may have an equivalent large hole at the rim, also in the front. Because these holes are in the front, the water streaming from these holes pushes the water out the bowl to the back, helping the flush to complete.

Don’t use metal. You could damage the porcelain. Use a old toothbrush- I snapped off the brush part on an angle and it does just as well without scratching or possible chipping.

I don't know what kind of amateur build up you have in your toilet, but mine gets stuff like concrete. Your toothbrush isn't going to touch that.

I tried this with one of those mini electric toothbrush heads, and after a few minutes, the brush part came off of mine, too. But no matter how hard we tried to scrape it with that, it barely put a dent in it. I am going to just cave and try with a metal tool.

u seem to be saying that u could have flushed that pile of calcified grit- is that right? seems like i shouldn't flush such hard material down my toilet. but i don't wanna fish that crap out for 20 minutes- hahaha. please make me feel safe to flush the pile i will ultimately create! hahaha. thanks! great video either way. : )
@ericschmidt6129

I'm not a plumber, but I don't think it would be a problem to flush the grit down. It's hard to get it all out anyway with the water and all. It's pretty small and light so it seems like a low risk. One way to make things a bit easier is to lower the water level in the bowl. An easy way to do this is to turn off the water supply to the toilet and then flush the toilet, which will flush most of the water out of the bowl. With the water shut off, the bowl won't fill up again.

It's a Toto toilet. Not sure of the exact model. We've had it for many years. Looking at the Toto website, it looks similar to the ECO Ultramax One-Piece Toilet, 1.28 GPF, Elongated Bowl

I stuck my finger in there, and there's either ton of build-up, or it's actually part of the toilet. I'm a little concerned about jabbing it too hard. It would make sense for it to be a smooth tube as far as I can stick my finger, but it certainly doesn't feel that way. Hmm.
@ericschmidt6129
@ericschmidt6129 11 ай бұрын
I assume it was smooth when the toilet was new, but the buildup makes it rough. The buildup can be pretty hard. Porcelain is even harder. Scraping by hand with a metal tool like a nail or screwdriver shouldn't damage anything. Don't use a hammer or anything (as if it could fit in the confined space).

@@ericschmidt6129 I ended up buying a nail setter at my hardware store, and really went to work on the lower siphon jet. Dang, a lot of build up came out! I originally thought it had to be part of the porcelain when I first stuck my finger in there, but nope, calcium build up! I used a small measuring spoon from my kitchen to scoop the stuff out after breaking it apart with the nail setter. Thanks for your video!!

Poor job of actually showing clearly where the siphon jet hole is, and didn't show the actual clean out, just the debris that was removed. Turns out my 2011 Kohler does not have a siphon hole like yours. Oops! Room for much improvement here if you remake this.

Thanks for the feedback. I do get questions as to how to remove the material. That would have been good to include in the original video. The location of the siphon jet hole is shown at the beginning of the video (0:04), but I don't call it "siphon jet hole" because I wasn't familiar with this term when I made the video.
