The Marathon as a sport is not just about which race is superior and what the color of their skin is. That would be too selfish to label such a magnificent sporting event. Much rather it is about personal victories and determination. I don't care if you are Asian, White or Black, anyone who does train for and successfully completes a Marathon should be recognized as a victory. The sport is a victory for humanity.

While to the ignorant, "black" Africa all looks the same, in fact it's a matter of very high probability that if there's to be a specialized adaptation, such as distance running, that it will come from the African pool.The human genetic diversity in Africa is orders of magnitude greater than the rest of the world combined. Imagine a gum ball machine with 100 colors. That's Africa. Two or three of those colors left Africa and populated the other continents while everything else stayed behind.

There have been a few good spaniards in recent years too and the portugese have a sub 2.10 group of runners. Also, Mr Brown (British) 4th in 2000 and 2004 Olympics. European or white runners as this post denotes can produce good results if they run even paced, they can't respond to big changes of pace etc like the eastern africans can inject. I am a white marathon runner myself, but for me a good performance is somewhere near 2.45 for the marathon, so I'm not even close to their level )

I'm not sure what you're referring to with the muscle fiber thing, but you are further proving my point. Jamaicans (who originated from West Africa) are genetically different from east Africans and are more geared towards sprints. Do you think it's a coincidence that distance runners and sprinters are both from specific regions?

Forgive me if I get too geeky here: Black people have a higher ratio of fast-twitch muscle fibres (which provides muscle bulk) and are better for track and field sports. Though you couldn't say water sports such as rowing and swimming are predominated by superb black athletes. The increased muscle to fat ratio could possibly be a disadvantage in the pool but the rowing issue is more historical/social. Something I'm trying to change at my rowing club.
@longhornmed15 жыл бұрын
I think he was talking about black people as athletes in general. West Africans tend to have higher proportion of fast twitch muscles that give them more explosive power. As for the East Africans, I've also read that they train in high altitudes all their lives, so their bodies adapt by producing more BPG and allowing oxygen to be unloaded from red blood cells into muscles more efficiently, allowing them to dominate long distance running.
@medit84truth12 жыл бұрын
No duh, that's not the issue. The commentator "himself" wasn't being racist. The problem is that his commentary was irresponsible, as it asserted a pre-supposition of what the "other" competitors might be thinking. In other words, the speaker was pre-supposing that the Kenyan and Ethiopian runners were some what racist, claiming they didn't take a competitor seriously b/c he was white. Maybe his co-anchor sense this as well.

Additionally, blacks have comparatively long tendons and short muscle bellies compared to total muscle-tendon length compared to whites. When doing repetitive movements like running, the muscle and tendon of the opposing muscle group to contracting muscles are stretched, which stores energy like an elastic band, which is then added to the backstroke as the opposing muscles contract back. ( sorry, my English isn't very good, we commonly refer to this as horizontaly and vertically striped.)
