@@TheArcadeArchive I hear you, modern games can still enthrall me with gameplay, but modern companies put far less thought into the whole package. What with the move away from practical, the game itself is really the only experience now. There are advantages to that like being able to pick up games a lot cheaper through download sales if you're on the fence, but I doubt we'll see visuals like that sideart again and that's what makes it so great people like you are putting so much effort into keeping these machines and promotional materials intact for history.

Fantastic stuff. Richard really is salt of the earth stuff. Most folk are in the boozer on a Saturday night, but he gave up watching his boxset of All Creatures Great and Small to drive in and scrape black goo off a Sprint 2. Now that's commitment. Loving this restoration - might try that alcohol rub on my face with cling film and see if I wake up in my 20s.

That artwork looks pretty much pristine. What a find! I'm looking forward to seeing that all lit up and in action. The front of the machine would have been matt black originally. I've seen people go over the matt black to change to satin black. It really is personal preference. Sometimes the metal plates on the sides of the coin door were brushed metal. Sometimes they were painted the same black to match the wood.

Maybe, the cabinet could of being panted black because the machine would of being in a traveling fair/sideshows. They often had the entire arcade section black. All the machines were painted the same so the screens would pop, along a black wall painted with the same paint. Some bored lass in a coin booth, in the middle chewing chewing gum whilst dispensing change to eager young 80s children was often the colorful part. I can't remember ever seeing much side art for cabinets at the local yearly arrival of the sideshows. So I mean the sideshows that travelled from place to place on a lorry, not fixed location sideshows, they were a lot more colorful. They were just big black square rooms that would get packed up on a lorry and driven from place to place.

@@TheArcadeArchive If Mario Kart came out in 1976, that's about what it would be. The machine I've fixed was made in 1978. The game barely has any physics so how fast you can corner depends on how fast you can turn the steering wheel. The gearshift kinda sucks because try negotiating the bendy curvy tracks while shifting, I'm in 3rd gear most the time and even that is too fast. Like the Super Mario Kart commercial, there's only two speeds, too fast and way too fast. This game has four. Butt slow, Yawn, Too fast and Ludicrous speed! I also really like Night Driver. (Doc Brown: Graphics. Where we're going, we don't need graphics.)
