Hello! I was the Winota player in Round 2. The draw turn was with 2 possible triggers in play (if winota was in play) and trying to kill the tevesh as it was the only draw engine. I pondered on taking the draw or not as I could have played out winota through 1 piece of interaction, but not multiple. Further, even if I could've gotten through the interaction, I was going to only have 1 trigger as the Tymna/Kraum in seat 2 was stating he would kill the Legion Loyalist I had to swing with to be able to kill the Tevesh out. I definitely agree on forced draws being not great for the format, but in the position we were in I did not really want to risk trying to grind out with only a potential single trigger. It was great to play against you, the game was very enjoyable with good politicing table talk.
@BoshNRoll3 ай бұрын
Yeah it was a bad spot for you. My point is that you and Tvesh were still taking game actions while me and TK were not. If Tvesh pushes too hard into TK and my interaction, it could give you a window. If you push too hard, it could give Tvesh a window. If everyone turtles up, then we reach the same result 30 minutes later but at least you were live for 4 extra points that whole time. If your worry was being the one pushing too hard and opening the door for Tvesh, then Tvesh should not have agreed to draw. Whoever is in the best position there should have used the remaining time to throw shit at the wall and see if any sticks. Successful players put themselves in position to get lucky when things are bad. If the fail case (play to a draw) is 1 point, but the miracle case (you spike a win) is 5 points, locking in the fail case (ID) with plenty of time to chase a miracle will hurt more than help over a career of tournament play.

@@BoshNRoll in that spot i felt like i was the one pushing the door which wouldve opened it for the seat 1 unfortunately. In that spot i just did not feel in a great spot of strength. Unlucky for me in the round 4 game i was in a stronger spot, felt i did not need to accept the draw that was being offered then immediately lost. Missed out top 16 by 1 point, such is life.

Congrats on the wins! I think the most important thing to take away from this is how being an incredible player can still have wildly different outcomes. You having that 14 month no top 16 spree and then winning a major event is super inspiring. Many people are results oriented and don’t understand that Magic, and especially cEDH have just a tiny little hint of luck involved. Even when peeps lose it’s not always “Skill Issue” cause I think you’re great. GG

thanks for talking about the ID meta game that happens. It is interesting to think that even tho they may have been incentivized to draw to stop the other from winning, the draw also stopped the remaining players from losing. In a tournament setting, the chance to make your opponent lose seems similarly valuable to the chance of you winning, so why not (like you said) take that extra time to sure up your choices, especially if there wasn’t much time pressure from the rest of the table (although the Winota player did have some obstacles to Overcome)

@BoshNRoll3 ай бұрын
In my actual winning play, Borne already resolved. In the alternate line where opp went to combat and I have to force the issue, you have to Consult first, hope Oracle doesn't get exiled, then Pact down to 1 card in deck instead of the normal 0 to account for Borne still resolving. Then you flash in Oracle after the stack clears. Pact doesn't exile your deck automatically, you can stop wherever you want.

I normally love your content (and I still do), but calling Kaalia not a cedh deck is just plain incorrect. It's not a top meta deck, obviously, but the only reason people don't get it as a cedh deck is because kaalia is very different (having 4 hits normally) than a high powered kaalia deck. It is a mardu turbo deck that uses its commander to have another separate win axis instead of having (a) commander(s) that only help facilitate main turbo lines in mardu (although there is a lot more nuance here). It also helps that this kaalia pilot is the goat piloter of the deck who has brought it personally to multiple top 16s and top 4s
@BoshNRoll3 ай бұрын
It is obviously literally a cedh deck because it was in a cedh tournament and succeeding. It's not a reach at all to understand what I meant there is that it's not an expected top meta deck that I have reps and experience and would plan to see undefeated in an event. I feel the same about Sefris, which is clearly literally a cedh deck because I had to play against it in the finals. If you're upset by my wording because discord buillies have said told you "that's not cedh" as a gatekeeping action, I get it, but that's a perspective you're applying to something I said, not how I meant it in the provided context. I simply meant it's a wild card at the table.
@MehrGills3 ай бұрын
@BoshNRoll that's fair, and this comment mostly does sum up my feelings on it (including that I can tell your intent wasn't the same as the normal gatekeeping idiots I've run into before). It is a little bit just that kaalia has long been singled out as non-viable in cedh by many players, and that the length and pervasiveness of that rhetoric has been hurtful to those of us who do play it. It's a sore spot for us, and having kaalia being the only one marked as Kaalia(?), as well as singled out as "normally just high power" despite other off-meta decks being there was reopening a scabbed over wound. I know that you didn't mean your statements in any way as gatekeeping as others have, and in fact, it's not really your actions/words that are wrong. It was just poking a pressure point in an oft brushed aside community in cedh that has seen unnecessary hate everywhere I've gone. As in, I played kroxa and kunoros (a worse deck by a bit. Trust me on that, I've done my work in playing and creating both decks), and that still turned way fewer heads than when I switched back to kaalia.

I am not sure how you could even play a tournament in EDH ( Note cEDH is high power EDH until you get your own ban list ). A 4-player format is in no way, shape, or form a good setup for a competition. How do you stop King Making or the buddy system l, where 8 guys enter and make a deal to push someone to the top based on wins and then they splits the pot. It's just silly. Get your own ban list, then play 1 v 1, you are welcome.
