Good job The Print on investing time and effort into exposing people in India to different voices of reason. I've read Fukuyama's work and while I'm not fully convinced with the validity of weight he places on liberal democracy in the long term, on regular political matters he provides very balanced views. The major problem in India at the moment is that the majority of those who speak waste their time in name calling and on useless debates on 'left', 'right', etc. The focus should be on core issues such as education, healthcare, food and nutrition, infrastructure. But Indians have been distracted away from meaningful discussions on these core issues thanks to the heavy propaganda from both sides. This popular ignorance and distraction will be the reason for nation's undoing.

Liberals need to develop better theoretical frameworks to understand Indian society and culture. The typical western frameworks based on the theory of power struggle and class conflicts do not apply on Indian society. Unfortunately people who value Indian culture and wisdom and so called liberals and some of them are perhaps genuinely concerned about the evils in Indian society have not developed suitable and grounded frameworks to understand the Indian society.

@@lalluchettan ji, after acknowledging the division we need to also look at the integral unity and how British rule exaggerated the caste system for their benefits. Yes, there was mobility within castes. But, the Gupta period, in a strange way, defined caste within marriage -- that marriages within castes were the ideal. Interbreeding dipped during the Gupta period. In independent India, the reservation policy was a step in the right direction to right the wrongs of a thousand years of caste oppression. But I believe strongly that we must apologise collectively to what we have done to the oppressed within Indian society.

Francis Fukuyama fails to understand that China's governance model has important advantages over liberal democracy. To classify China as authoritarian misses the underlying meritocratic and democratic structure of the ruling party. U.S. and many other liberal democracies are failing by succumbing to leaders who go too far in taking advantage of populist and nationalist sentiments. Modi has the opportunity and ability to chart an independent path. But an anti-China path will doom India to perpetual third-world status. China has no interest in territorial wars, but will change the world and lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty with the belt-and-road initiative. India has the opportunity to work with China and provide an important counter-balance to China within the region or to take the path of isolationism.

China's expansionist strategy is not economically sustainable. This is similar to British empire which also was not feasible and became costly after the most costly metals like gold have been taken away from India. Similarly occupied territories like Tibet are totally uneconomical and would only prove to be a drain on the exchequer. Best thing is to have a Tibet which is totally independent and if at all with close relationship with India. Tibetan people know how to lead life in the hostile climates and mountainous regions and any attempt to radically change lifestyle would only put Tibet in jeopardy.

Francis Fukuyama suffers from the same problem that plagues all liberal thinkers. All minorities are equal, but some minorities are more equal. India welcomed the Dalai Lama when and has been pushing back against Chinese attempts to dictate the order. This is not a recent event, but decades old. If that is not being tolerant to minorities then what is? Yet India's still gets tagged as a country that mistreats minorities. India has challenges. But what makes him speak of religious intolerance as the biggest vice in the country? We don't have full freedom of expression, our bureaucracy is holding us back, we don't have enough sharp public intellectuals our economic system still has socialist era hangovers. And yet, Fukuyama thinks, that minority treatment is the biggest thing holding India back? Dude, get some coffee and pontificate elsewhere. Your thoughts reek of a holier than thou attitude.
