I think the difference between PI and stalkers are; PI is getting paid, PI is not supposed to be personally invested, PI has a license and has some rules to obey

The 2nd point is most important. Also a PI is doing their job to get some info - are you actually injured? - and if they do their job right you won't even notice. A stalker is doing their work to get noticed and feared by the victim

I'm pretty sure there's a whole class of people out there convinced that in order to be disabled you MUST be in a wheelchair. There's a whole spectrum of problems, and a rainbow of different stages of them. You wouldn't think I'm disabled but Cancer Stage Four is by law a disability. And believe me, being on Chemo Meds every day for Five years has WRECKED me. But I'm not in a wheelchair and I'm not grey haired. I'm so lucky that most of the disbelief I've encountered hasn't been anyone directly ordering me to act "normal" or something but I dread it every day.

I am so sorry and wish you the best. Cancer is terrifying to handle even caught early. Stage 4 is enormous to deal with. I have major depressive disorder and had ulcerative colitis resulting in an ileostomy, both of which are legal disabilities but which usually are invisible. As it turns out, institutions will actually openly discriminate against someone with an ostomy because having an ostomy isn’t considered a disability (it’s a procedure and resulting medical device to treat some extreme cases of injury, cancers, and digestive/urinary disorders which *are* disabilities). It’s a bad situation out there for people with all disabilities.

My mom has this issue, she has severe issues that effect her walking but....she has good days and bad days. On bad days she can barley walk and needs my help to do most things, On her good days she walks without much issues save needing to rest after a bit. But she has to act like her bad days anytime we aren't home otherwise people accuse her of not being disabled and she only wants to go places when she has a good day but has slowly but surly been stopping going out at all because it's hard on her body to behave as if it's her bad day and is actively worsening her conditions as she can't exercise properly. It's so frustrating how many people don't understand how disabilities work. It's equally frustrating that there are people actively faking it to make it entirely understandable why PIs are hired to follow people making claims. It makes life hard.

My grandpa lamented not being able to find four good friends of his from when he was in the military. He didn’t know where they ended up and only had their names and where they were originally from and nothing more. I got online and started searching and eventually calling phone numbers that I found as well. I did the whole “hello, I’m looking for (insert name of guy) who was in the Navy back in (insert year) and was on this particular ship with my grandfather-are you him?” I had a lot of misses but eventually called two of the right guys and asked if it would be ok to give their numbers to my grandfather who would like to reconnect with them. They both agreed. I’ve literally never seen my grandfather’s face ever light up with excitement and happiness like it did that day. So don’t give up on finding loved ones-no matter how distant the shot seems. Sometimes you get lucky and find someone. I watched my grandfather relive memories that I never would have known about on those phone calls. And he was SO happy that day. He looked like a kid who got his most desired and long awaited gaming system that he never thought he would ever get-to put it in today’s terms 😂. He looked like it was the best gift ever.

@@rInkStories when I was a kid, he did a lot of nice things for me and I loved spending time with him. So when that topic came up about his military service and he spoke about those friends when I was an adult, I had a tool that he never had and didn’t know how to use-the internet. I knew it was a really long shot, and I’m still to this day getting emails from a website I joined called Forces Reunited that didn’t help me AT ALL sadly. I did better looking up names online in the cities he said they came from. I couldn’t find two of the guys-it was as if they fell off the face of the earth so I don’t know if they had long since died or what happened. But just no mention of them anywhere. But the other two were much easier. As for me, I just wanted to pay the kindness forward. If he hadn’t treated me good when I was a child it probably wouldn’t have happened. He got back what he invested in me, you could say. I tried to do little things in return to show that I cared. Another little much less special thing I did for him was look up certain foods from the past that have long since disappeared in today’s world that he grew up on and his wife wouldn’t cook him. So I learned how looking it up online and made the things that his mother made for him when he was young. Some things he hadn’t tasted in forty years. No one’s cooking is ever as good as mom’s but I tried 😂.

My father was an attorney representing a taxicab company being sued by a passenger for causing a crippling injury. Plaintiff claimed that he could walk only with crutches, etc. My father hired a PI who tracked the plaintiff using a 16mm movie camera. (This dates the case.) Plaintiff was filmed doing all kinds of normal activities, including bowling a full game at a public alley. When the film was shown in court, plaintiff got out of his wheelchair, jumped the gate to the gallery, and ran out like a rabbit. Taxicab company won the case.

Having never done so myself, if I had to, my first step would be to Google "private investigators in [where I live]." Then I'd see if I could find any reviews on them to help decide which to use. If there were no reviews, I'd check on the addresses of the offices if they're listed and go with the one whose office is in the best location or looks the most reputable. As an example, I'd choose one that was headquartered in an office building rather than one running out of a dumpy storefront in a run-down strip mall in a sketchy part of town.

So for the person with the grandfather's missing brother, the grandfather doesn't have to be the one to do the DNA kit. A number of years ago I wanted to try finding out more info about my paternal grandmother's family origins but also because there was debate about who my mom's bio father was. My mom refused to do a DNA test for years so I said screw it and ordered an ancestry kit for myself. It came back linking me with family members of the "other" man and one of his grandkids reached out to me. Now my mom is thrilled to have new half-siblings and she doesn't think any differently of the siblings she grew up with. So the OP could certainly order the kit for themself and if it doesn't provide any leads then they don't have to tell their grandfather about it. But if it does I'm sure he would be overjoyed.

@redjoker365

I think a big part of it comes from terrible Holocaust education which then allows antisemites to latch on to the miseducated. For example, I've met some people who were taught the Nazis were getting rid of everyone who didn't have blond hair and blue eyes, which is obviously disproved if you look at a single picture of Hitler. There's also people who only get taught about Jewish victims, then get confused when presented information about non-Jewish victims later, and decide the whole thing must have been made up

I've met a few. Some are just trying desperately to be edgy and come across as more pitiful than anything. Others claim that it was the Allies who acktshually committed the Holocaust, because how dare they cut German supply lines and leave those poor enslaved people in work camps to starve... and forced the Germans to kill them, or something. And finally, others just start screaming "RABBI!" at me. To which I respond, "You don't have to call me teacher; I already know I schooled you."

7:50 can confirm you’re absolutely right. I’m a night shift security guard in a corporate building. It’s overnight so literally nothing happens. I basically get paid to read, play video games, eat, and sometimes sleep. There are very few cameras in the building because the company that works here has a very strict policy against micromanagement of its employees as it greatly degrades worker morale. It’s the best. There’s even showers here and a gym. To top it off there’s a full blown cafeteria on one of the lower floors that stays stocked with every condiment you can ask for on tap, and every floor has a kitchenette with fridges, coffee, and ice cold water on tap as well. It’s a fantastic building with every single amenity you can ask for

I completely agree with the person who said that you have to still live your life even if you’re disabled disabled isn’t dead. Disabled people still walk they still need to get groceries and counter to peoples beliefs They don’t just hand out helpers to do everything for you. You might be able to film what somebody’s doing, but you cannot ascertain how much pain they’re in because they did that. It’s a big difference when one is bringing groceries one it’s a human necessity to eat food and one has spent five hours shopping at the mall for fun. The latter could suggest someone is exaggerating their claim but there are also conditions that ween and wane sometimes daily - sometimes people have a few good weeks or months out of a year. For example, somebody with bipolar disorder could be stable for six months at a time and during that time they look normal they’re acting normal. They physically appear normal to everybody, but once every six months, they have a flareup where they end up being institutionalized so how are you going to work a job get a new job every six months because no one’s gonna hold your job while you’re at a mental institution. And there’s no telling how long it’s going to take medication treatment to get stable that could be three months and if you haven’t been at a job longer than a year, guess what all those protections don’t apply to you yet. With all of my various disabilities, there are some days that I can’t even get off of the couch and there are some days where I would be able to spend a few hours at an amusement park. The problem is I don’t have enough good days or good hours that could translate into a job having four good hours on Tuesday and three good hours on Friday and six hours on Saturday doesn’t do much for you if you can’t plan those days are going to be. A job has a schedule they need you specific time and they need you to stay there until a specific time. There’s no way to sync up one’s random few good hours in a week with what a job requires. And then if it’s a bad day when you wake up and it’s a workday, you can’t make it to work and as soon as you can’t make it to work once or twice, especially as a new employee who hasn’t been working there very long you’re getting fired. It’s not just about being able to about being able to consistently work because you can only work once a week or once every two weeks and the amount of time that you’re actually able to be productive is only 10 hours a week. There’s no job in the world you can do that’s gonna make enough money for you to survive in ten hours that allows you to work those hours whenever you’re feeling up to it.

About "Bree", the long-lost granddaughter: I'm truly glad you don't need to worry about the political climate. I'm trans and gay, with a far-right family who votes for Trump, and says racist crap publicly; both in person and on social media. Not only that, but they are abusive as hell. Bc of how insistent they are on their political views, plus their open bigotry, I stay away. I do not trust that they care about me, and worse, wouldn't hurt me themselves. Sometimes political views are a valid reason for people to just drift apart. Sometimes it's a symptom of a larger issue, like being a hateful bigot. Even then, Bree lived a very different life from her family, and it sounds like it was her choice to leave. Not having seen family for so long, coupled with differing views, I think it's fair that she didn't wanna stick around. Family isn't owed anything, even if they're generally okay people. (This is coming from a dude who's disowned 99% of his family for being terrible people, so take my view with a grain of salt, tho.)

Yeah, my specific philosophical and policy disagreements with my family actually seem minor to me, but in practice the disagreements are also things that make both my quality of life and my family members I don’t talk to much go down and would put me in severe danger from them to be fully open about who I am. I am nonbinary and don’t like government control. My family ostensibly claims they’re for small government and against big corporations… but in practice they do nothing to support those positions because they’re violently against abortion and trans rights.

17:47 - I know people have answered this question but there is definitely a downside to PI work. I’m not just talking about outing cheating, lying, fraud, etc. I remember there was this television series that involved finding lost family members with the help of PIs. The show ended up being pulled not long after it started. I think they ended up doing a similar series but being very careful with their cases. If memory serves, what ended the initial series was a young man approached the show to find his birth mother who gave him up right after birth and had a “No Contact” on the adoption case. The PI apparently ignored that very clear warning and forced contact between the mother and her son. They did try to contact her but she ignored them which meant they should have taken the hint. But no, they didn’t. They took the son to her house and knocked. When she opened the door, she froze up. Her face paled and she slammed the door in his face. It was then that they did further digging. They introduced a r*pe victim to the child she was forced to conceive. She had paled because he was apparently a dead ringer for the r*pist. The son did send her a single letter apologizing for bringing such trauma to her doorstep. He actually had no idea there was a “No Contact” on his adoption file. His adoptive parents, I believe did know the circumstances, had decided not to tell him, but advised him not to contact her. He thought it was probably because she was an unwed teen mother. Not a victim of r*pe. I do know the show faced A LOT of backlash for the clear breach and like I said, the initial show was pulled but a few years later was started up again. The new show made it very clear that they would NEVER do that again. I was so devastated for the woman. I believe she wrote her son back thanking him for his apology but asking him to please do not reach out in the future. I also believe she ended up moving again.

Story 5, I want to put the DWP in perspective because the story doesn't sum up the "oops never mind" of it. They gave assessors bonuses for the number of people they kicked off benefits, and if the people appealed they went through the arduous months long process of stress and hassle and just said "yes, you qualify for benefits" knowing that they did before they kicked them off. Like we know you can't walk and have evidence from a doctor that you can't use your hands but we think you are fit for work so I can get my £100 bonus, just appeal the decision and you'll get backpay in six months time, if you aren't homeless, starving or suicidal. Boils my blood that they weren't jailed for that.

Story 5 - there are people who are jealous of folks who get any sort of benefit or assistance for disability; assume you at your best, is you at your worst, and/or are just that petty. They don't realize it, but they've got a heart condition. Chronic lack thereof. I'm the one with disabilities, but they're the ones I pity.

Right like I’m essentially housebound, leaving the house only for necessary medical appointments that can’t be done at home (about once a month or less) and spend most of my time sleeping (severe ME). My benefits are barely even survivable at best and I am constantly grieving the life I could’ve had. People who are ‘jealous’ of people on benefits are seriously jaded😑

With the China one, my family was actually on the other side of something similar. My grandfather and his brother got separated when escaping Siberia in WW2, and out of guilt, my grandfather never went home. He couldn't bare the thought of returning home to an empty house with all his siblings dead. Turns out 5/8 of his siblings survived and made it home, and spent the next 40 years looking for him. He died believing that he had betrayed his family and couldn't protect them. My dad eventually found the lost side of the family in 2021, and found out my grandfather's brother died the day after him. We wish we'd been able to find and reunite them sooner

That story about the person who reported the person on benefits makes me angry. Because even though all of those people sitting in that room must’ve seen that video and they knew that the video showed somebody who was struggling to walk and get back into their house. Yet they intentionally took screenshots of the video picking out the images that looked as though the person were looking at person running and then tried to present that at hearing as proof that the person was not disabled. This happens all the time in this country and if there isn’t some lawyer there who can recognize that these are screenshots people who literally their life depends on their benefits because if they don’t get their medication, they will cease to live anymore are kicked off all the time because of stuff like this. The government will twist whatever evidence they have to try to make it paint the picture the picture they wanted to paint of someone who’s perfectly capable that they don’t have to pay. They’re not using deceptive, shady, ethical methods to get a persons benefits, denied, or taken away who really deserve it. If the people who were doing these types of investigations were ethical, then they would’ve come back to the government agency that controls this I’m not in the UK so it doesn’t apply to me the same and I followed him, but I didn’t see anything that we could use every time he coming out of his house he’s struggling he’s propping himself up. He’s limping. If anything, the evidence I’ve collected is only going to booster the other side. But they will see somebody who literally can’t walk and try to pick out clips second and time where it appears that they’re walking normally so that they can go back to their employer and go. I got this one. Of course it’s not just that the investigators are on ethical, but the whole process itself is really on ethical. Because these investigators go out and they don’t come back with so called dirt for the client to use then these government agencies will fire them and higher somebody else who comes up more often claiming that they have evidence that will get the government off of paying. They do the investigators they do that with the doctors that they used to independently supposedly independently verify your ailments. If that doctor doesn’t find enough people faking Will lose their job because they work for the government and the government doesn’t want to pay benefits so if they hire a Doctor Who says that like 80% of the people who sent to him or disabled, he’s gonna quickly lose his job. So you can see how this whole system is very much against the disabled person who is just trying to survive and eat and have a roof over their head. Essentially bribing their workers investigators claim reviewers, and doctors. And they’re not saying oh if you find this person disabled, we’re going to fire you but everyone is aware of the consequences when another provider approves too many cases. They’re not directly bribing for a particular outcome. I believe that this is still a form of bribery. and it’s even worse because this is the person form of employment. They need to survive on this money could be months before they get another job so they’re not gonna risk losing their job to find somebody disabled even if they truly are disabled.

Stalking is usually defined by one person developing an unhealthy fascination with another person. The stalker creates a non existent relationship with the victim in the stalker’s mind. It often escalates to violence against the victim and/or the victim’s family/friends. The stalker could hire a PI but that gets very expensive and most PIs would not want to work for an actual stalker. PIs actually spend a lot of boring time watching and photographing possible cheaters or folks who try to scam the system by claiming disability when they aren’t disabled. It isn’t like TV or the movies.

If anyone is in a similar situation to the OP where the grandpa has a missing sibling, you could suggest a DNA ancestry test so that you could see what specific regions your family is from. I know that 2 companies at the point definitely show that, there may be others. I got my grandmother on my dad's side to do one of the tests and I'm the admin of her DNA, which lets me see her relatives that have also taken the test. I wish I had been able to have my mom's parents tested too, but they passed before I was born/when I was little. As an aside, don't forget to talk with your loved ones! You never know how long you'll have with each other.

The investigation probably cost more than the money she was asking for too. People and insurance companies love to be scumbugs for zero financial benefit. The private investigator is even worse because she was probably visibly struggling to some degree even on her good day, but they were specifically tasked with gathering evidence she was fine, so that was ignored.

Since my first comment was Long, I’m going to leave another comment. When I started school, the Americans with disabilities act had just started. I was not learning brew, as I should’ve been, not learning how to do maths properly and was bullied horribly by teachers and students like. They were trying to force my mother to send me a way to the state school for the blind so they didn’t have to do anything extra. All of the money meant for my teaching and the equipment that I needed to write and such was used to make the staff a gym with very high dollar equipment for the time. This has had to be done. People have had to hire private investigators and such for stuff like this. It took the state of Texas coming into the whole thing and even then it did not fix it. I still ended up having to go to the school for the blind, because not only was I not receiving the proper amount of hours, though my teacher was amazing and was my teacher through high school, but they purposely bullied me and allowed kids to physically harm me. That crap is real if your kid says something figure out a wayto find out if they’re being truthful so you have evidence.

Many years ago I was being spied on for an on-going work related injury. Their Insurance agent informed my lawyers that they had footage of me supposedly completing tasks I had advised I was unable to do. They would not release the footage they supposedly had of me. I told my lawyer to ask about the colour of the hair of the woman they had recorded - yep not me, they had recorded my sister. Their footage was of a blonde woman, and I was brunette. We told them to do more research before making wild claims. I won my case, but only received a small amount of compensation in the end.

Sometimes I wonder if I was the target of a PI. I went on long term due to eye issues and not being able to stare at computer screens for long periods of time, which my job required. I needed to get sergery, which just after the pandemic, was heavily delayed. When I got back to work my boss oddly knew that the only times I went to play on my computer during my time off was when I ran my D&D sessions for my group, and even then I stopped after sometime, exactly quoting something very specifc I said to my group while I was breaking the news to them. I have no idea how he could have gotten that specific information (what I said), but this video got me thinking.

I really hate PI's. I had a workers comp case some years back and it went beyond stalking. I couldnt leave my parents house without them driving past and going slow to take photos and videos for evidence for 2 years. I was followed in stores, im sure they hacked into my phone which is highly illegal and they paid off neighbors to stop by my parents house when i was too sick to leave for physical therapy some weeks. I get people screw over the system all the time but i still suffer years later from seizures, both epileptic and pseudo. I have ptsd from being stalked and one of the vehicles rented to stalk me was a loud truck and i still get brought to tears when one passes by and that was years ago. If im not allegedly planning on taking out the US president it shouldnt be leagl to follow me. Scars from 17 stitches in my arm, a massive concussion and seizures caught on eeg wasnt enough proof of my injuries. They more than likely spent 200,000 plus dollars following me around and it wasnt even worth it. I settled my case anyways. Its insane.

Anyone who has ever received an indirect or implicated threat knows what one is. Also, injuries caused by accidents are typically covered by some sort of insurance (including car accidents), so his client was probably an insurance company. Also, getting your medical bills paid doesn't do any good if you missed a lot of work and have bills to pay, or missed a lot of work and lost your job or can no longer go back to the same work (possibly needing to get more or different training), all of which takes time and costs money. Not getting paid out what you should because you don't look disabled/injured enough is BS.

Texas refused to help me because I'm not immediately related to the child and the father alive/abused my late cousin repeatedly + my cousin had severe schizophrenia and left her child in care of someone + child wasn't school age until this year.
