23:16 "You can be arrested and still be a decent person." At my brother's 20th birthday he was caught by a park ranger having a beer and ended up getting a minor in possession of alcohol and he ended up sentenced to 20 hours of community service. A few years later a bouncer at a bar didn't believe his ID was him so he was confiscating it. My brother contacted the non-emergency line for the police and when they came out they asked him a couple of questions and then arrested him because there was a warrant out for his arrest. 20 hours of community service is the same as 2.5 days (8 hour work days) so when he brought in the forms and the police had transferred the information to the county where he'd originally gotten in trouble somewhere along the line it was documented that he'd completed 2.5 hours instead of 2.5 days, so they put out the warrant (to be clear, he did the full amount, it was a clerical error). They never notified him of the warrant so he had no idea until he asked the police for help getting his ID back. Fortunately it was all resolved and he was able to get things expunged, but he went on to be a math teacher and working in public schools even things that are expunged come up on your background checks...if he were ever to use it he has a great story for the importance of units for his class!

I had a book that collected stories of dumb criminals. One favorite story was of a wannabe bank robber and a smart Teller with nerves of steel. She noticed he was real jittery and calmly noted that they didn't accept the paper he had and he'd have to go another Bank at X location. HE ACTUALLY LEFT AND WENT THERE! In the mean time the first teller had called the cops and they were waiting for the guy when he arrived.

Story 13: At least it was a non answer instead of an answer that gave more evidence against him. By the time an officer is testing your sobriety, you are going to be arrested anyway. If no response can help you, then any response that doesn't count as proper evidence against you is probably a good answer.

Best one I witnessed was about 20 years ago. Someone hit my then-girlfriend's car from the side. She wasn't injured beyond some bruises but the other person drove without license and without insurance. She wanted the repairs to the car covered somehow, I drove her to court. The other person showed up to the hearing about 5 minutes late - can be explained with anything like "nervous, had to pee, sorry". That person's excuse was "I've been stuck in traffic and couldn't find a parking lot." Needless to say, the judge was impressed by that excuse, but not in a positive way.

My brother used to be a court interpreter. He went to a trial to translate for an English witness (this happened in Spain). The defendant was an old Spanish dude, who was on trial for messing with an Englishman's car (puncturing tires, keying, breaking windows, the lot). This. Fricking. Defendant. When asked whether he pleaded guilty or not, his answer was: "Your Honor, I don't think what I did was bad. I was just trying to protect Spain's values. You know the way these English people are, right?" He said many other dumb things, but man, talk about making a first impression. He was convicted (obviously) and, at the end of the trial, my brother says, the defendant's appointed attorney told my brother: "In all my years as a lawyer, I've never seen anyone as stupid as this guy".

And in a similar vein, I don't get people who complain about speeding tickets. There's a reason why it's illegal. It's not to scam you out of your precious money. It's to ensure that you're not going so fast that you lose control over your car.

I'm not a cop but I've seen people do dumb things in front of cops. The dumbest one I saw was in heavy traffic. One car cut another off, the guy in the car in front got out and marched over to the car that he cut off, only to realize at the last second it was an unmarked police car. The cop turned his lights on, got out, and arrested the road rager on the spot.

A guy I knew in high school went straight into the marines. But he was kicked out for getting into too many fights. So he's homeless, jobless, and driving around in a stolen car when he decides to rob a bank with a pair of scissors. While there, someone comes in complaining about the doofus who double parked, and how they can't get out. This guy apologizes and goes out to move his car. Of course, the lock the doors while he is moving his car. He was still begging to be let back in when the police arrive.

With story 16, I've heard of the "everthing that goes to parent B's house must be returned when they go to parent A's house". this is usually done as a result of either parent B stealing the cloths (if they're high value/name brand) to sell or because parent B (or their spouse) has repeatedly destroyed the clothes. For example, I've heard of one where step mom poured grape soda all over the children's clothes in their over night bag an hour before they where returned to bio mom's.
