When you are stressed or anxious, the fight or flight anxiety response is triggered in your body by one of your senses. So anything you see, hear, smell, touch, taste or even imagine, could be perceived as something that will cause you harm and be a threat.
This could include external stressors, such as work, money, family, time, societal or cultural norms and expectations, experiences of discrimination …. the list goes on.
There are also internal stressors, for example, negative anxious self talk and beliefs, self criticism, imposter syndrome, how you see your identity, past memories and even how you feel about your future.
All of these things may be interpreted as potential threats and cause stress and anxiety.
The fight and flight anxiety response is the physical and psychological shift that happens in your body when you encounter one of these threats.
It is an evolutionary adaptive response to anxiety that helps us to cope with whatever is going on in our environment, and is specifically designed to keep us safe.
Humans have it, mammals have it and even reptiles have it!
