Simply put: “懂” is more like to deeply understand something，“明白” is more like to know a fact. There are some situations where these two words can be interchangeable, for example: Do you know what I’m saying. 【你懂/明白我在说什么吗？】

In Cantonese/ Vietnamese, we also use 曉 (Hiểu - Vietnamese) as same meaning as 懂. I don't know if other chinese (mainland, or in other regions) use that word?

Thanks for the pinyin , it's a good support when trying to read characters you don't have to guess forever when you're already slow reading then get stuck because you haven't seen a character yet
