I know there are some things that the dev team do not disclose but I imagine we have discussed it somewhere on our forums. I'll check and see.

Why is BABIP used as a skill, rather than an outcome? It should be THE composite, not a component of contact.

It is a skill though. Better hitters tend to have better BABIP because it's a measure of their ability to hit the ball where people are not. A batter with high power can have awful BABIP despite hitting it hard if all he does is flyout with a bad launch angle. A soft swinger can also have a high BABIP if all he does is hit soft liners over the infield. The question I have is where speed fits into all of it because running speed has an effect on BABIP in real life.

@@jirikurto3859 The easiest way to understand it is to keep in mind that the in-game ratings are not exact analogs to their real-life counterparts. As an example, let’s consider speed. Obviously, in real-life a players foot speed impacts numerous aspects of their overall performance. Importantly though, a players in-game Speed rating does not capture all of those impacts (nor does it attempt to). In fact, the various real-life effects of speed are broken up and represented separately across several different categories in the ratings system: the real-life effect of speed on BABIP (that is, converting would-be outs into hits, e.g. by beating out the throw on a ground ball) is effectively baked in to the in-game BABIP rating; the real-life effect of speed on gaining extra bases is partially captured in Gap Power (in terms of stretching singles to doubles) and partially by the Speed rating itself (in terms of stretching doubles to triples & advancing as a base runner); the Range rating also has an element of speed bakes into it; and there may even be further examples. I hope that makes sense!

Looks like all the people on the OOTP subreddit are wrong about Gap power...
