We have a 2013 Kia Rio we bought new , with 1.6 engine . It has 225,000 miles and just replaced the alternator for the very first time. Replaced battery for the second time , 3 months ago. Replaced the plugs once. Took Pcv out , shook it , it rattled, put it back in . Its been the most trouble free car we've ever owned ! For $13,000.00 it has been a great car . I used the same synthetic, conventional oil blend as the dealer used when i had them change it when it was under warranty. Changed my own since. There was one recall on the part in the steering wheel , CLOCK SPRING, which had caused the trip odometer and steering wheel controls to stop working. It was replaced free of charge. Also have never added more than half a quart of oil , between changes, and only did it 3 times. I give the car 5 stars after 10 years and 225,000 miles.

By far the best way to explain the issue. The key is with whatever car you buy, have a general knowledge of your specific unit before buying & do maintenance something before the recommended time (for prevention).

My GDI engines each have a catch can which helps. I try to run top-tier gasoline and I do an intake valve cleaning chemically once a year. I am hoping this pushes out walnut blasting, but time will tell. My "N" engine ran really great after the CRC Intake Valve Cleaner. I switched last year to the Berryman since it is a single person operation as opposed to the two-people required for the CRC cleaner. Well aware of the issues and I am trying to address them early. These days I think all engines are GDI.

I just bought a 2023 Kia Sportage X-Pro with a 2.5L GDI engine. Found out about the carbon issues afterwards 😮. But now I know GDI’s are common & not singular to Kia’s. Long story short, my engine isn’t on the list of motors, even on Kia’s own list. I’ll stay on top of my maintenance and I do majority of 90 highway miles daily so I’m expecting positive results. I’m loving my Kia. I definitely think they’ve improved their quality immensely. Time will definitely tell & I’m optimistic 😊.

I don’t know why this is not a recall? they can do gdi, but they MUST do set of secondary injectors to spray gasoline before the intake valves to wash. So easy to do but yet they don’t. Definitely a recall issue. Is there a lawsuit for this issue? I have a 2013 Hyundai sonata and having this exact problem.
@Benscarreviews

I haven’t come across any lawsuit information but I agree, it seems like a recall for certain models and years should be a thing. Kind of like the transmission issues with the 2nd gen Colorado and Canyons. Good luck with you engine. Thank you for watching!

I believe the carbon is coming from blow by through the rings and back up through the PVC all that oily vapor gets thrown against those hot intake valves and that's where s*** starts happening. At 136,000 mi my car started using oil And it wasn't running quite as smoothly Took it up to get gassed up opened it up on the highway a little bit and after I exited stop at a couple lights over a couple miles it started knocking. So I drove it home had it towed to the dealership. And was denied because they said it wasn't rod bearing failure. I did 100% of my service at the dealership. On both my cars. By the way my Sportage has 400,000 mi on it. It's not GDI. Best car I've ever had. The hell of it is The Optimas still holding up great. No rust everything works. I had to put a new engine in it. I also installed a catch can however I believe those are problematic because the moisture they collect can freeze in the winter time. Theoretically a catch can should help tremendously. IF you start getting a lot of oil in that catch can you know you've got problems.

@@Benscarreviews My sonata GDI engine is still running at 280k miles....Cheaper premium gas from Sam's club and the only fuel additive I use is the cheap Walmart brand "Supertech" fuel injected cleaner for $2.35....yes, only 2 dollars and 35 cents....I have used Seafoam, Techron, and Lucas additives but supertech is much cheaper and works Okay...Seafoam is the best but the cost of Seafoam adds up quickly......Oil change is Valvoline full synthetic or Castrol Edge ALWAYS....GDI engines don't work well with Duramax and Pennzoil oil. Only Valvoline synthetic and Castrol Edge for GDI. The worst oil for GDI is royal purple. The only problem with GDI is ENGINE NOISE....At 280k miles, my engine sounds like a rusty loud lawn mower but IT STILL RUNS...The radiator fan is dead and the A.C is gone but the vehicle still runs. As long as it's running, I will drive it.....AND YES, I will buy another GDI again because I see that it's a car ppl don't want and the price is always low......Ppl hate GDIs simply because they don't understand them. I understand them very well and the noise doesn't bother me.

@@Benscarreviews Best Engine Oil for GDI engines are... #1 : CHEVRON DELO full synthetic #2: CASTROL EDGE full synthetic #3: VALVOLINE Full synthetic Worst Experience is Pennzoil and Duramax....the acceleration with those 2 feel heavy....like the pistons is struggling to stroke. Chevron Delo is the best experience for engine noise reduction and acceleration smoothness. BEST FUEL ADDICTIVES for GDI 1. Techron 2. SuperTech fuel injector cleaner WITHOUT the carburetor cleaning feature. ***Supertech has 2 types... (1) Injector Cleaner and (2) Injector cleaner with carburator... DON'T GET the one with Carburator cleaning add on....the Carburetor cleaning variation causes check engine lights to come on. 3. Seafoam....now you have to be careful with Seafoam because the instructions insinuate emptying the whole container into the fuel tank but from my experience/testing, just use 1/3 of the container. Seafoam is too powerful for GDI engines so you have to use much less. Seafoam make GDI engines rev too much....the excessive revving could cause a problem down the line. BEST FUEL TO BUY FOR GDI engines is #1 Chevron Supreme with Techron. #2 BP Premium #3 Costco premium #4 Shell Nitro premium...but you have to be careful with Shell Nitro premium because it makes the care rev too much.
