Suskriti sat down with me to try and understand some of the words we use when we all together.
Coming to Asia the transition was difficult in how I (We) spoke, especially coming from St. Kitts in the Caribbean.

St. Kitts accent is definitely not similar to Jamaican patois. Jamaican patois is entirely different from any other caribbean accent. I could put I u man on deh phone with a Jamaican from St. Anns, Jamaica or even Monteego Bay, Jamaica and I bet you couldn't understand anything dem man saying. Shabba Ranks is originally from St. Anns, Jamaica too.
@ThatGuyAB
@ThatGuyAB 6 жыл бұрын
True, However, not saying that we Kittitians speak everything like Kamaicans, but getting complimented from Jamaicans myself is reason why I made the above statement. And I've had different caribbean countries say the same thing they thought we were Jamaican.

ThatGuyAB very true I am also kittian but born in America I grew up around all types of Caribbean people and most swear I’m a born Jamaican when I talk patios,and lots of people in my family sound so as well I’m not saying we sound exactly like Jamaicans but we are the only other island that have similar dialect to them
@Asafo87
@Asafo87 6 жыл бұрын
Basically one could break it down to Northern Caribbean vs Southern Caribbean dialect. My parents are Jamaican and Montserratian and the accent, phrases, slang etc are quite similar compared to islands further south such as Barbados, Trinidad and Guyana which I have a harder time deciphering.

Saint/St Kitts was the first Caribbean island claimed by England in 1623. Shortly afterwards it was settled by English settlers, some linguists claim it was the progenitor of the Anglophone Caribbean/Caribbean English accents.

My husband is Kittitian and my family still cannot understand him after 23 years of knowing him. I cannot understand my husband's father at all, he is from de country, his aunt from Monkey Hill is difficult to understand as well. The people from the city seem to be the easiest to understand for me. His mother is okay unless she starts talking fast and laughing. One time she ask me how come I can't understand her but I can understand my hubby, I'm like I live with him and talk to him everyday, lol. He is from the Village.

Heyy I just want to give you some advice on your channel, this is a highly watched video because you gave us a small eye into life on st kitts, many people watching will have heritage but maybe don’t know their family or can’t make it to the island so come to KZbin to live vicariously others. I believe you’re in a unique position, if you’re running out of content ideas I promise you what may seem boring you would be very interesting to your audience. Things like day in the life videos, showing cultural differences, showing differences on the areas of the island, best things to see, cultural foods and foods specific to st kitts, what a typical holiday looks like. I and I’m sure a lot of other people would love to see into your world.

I JUST found out that I have Kittian Heritage (3rd generation). My maternal grandfather's parents migrated here from St. Kitts but now SOOOO many things make sense. My grandfather used to say "ye-stid-da" when he was trying to say yesterday. I would LOVE for someone to say "yesterday" just to hear if that's how it's said. I always thought it was his Southern draw but when I heard other Southerners, they didn't talk like him. Then my family just LOOKED different, if you will but I never paid it any mind. Mind you, I'm 52 years old, my mother passed when I was 18 and my grandfather died about 20 years ago, however, we have a family Historian and this came up and I was like WOW!!! I'm definitely going there. I'm so happy find out about my Heritage!!!

Remember that "deh/dey" doesn't mean "there" or "they". It's a word meaning "to be (in a space/location)". It's from our African roots. So 'weh yu deh?" means "where are you?". "Mi deh yah" in Jamaica (and probably elsewhere) is a common response to "wa a gwaan?" (how are you?) and means word-for-word: "I am here" (mi deh yah = I'm ok / I'm all here).

I don't know why he is generalizing our way if speaking because everyone doesn't speak alike thus this is not the way we speak in St.kitts! Yes some of the Expression are true but some of us have to speak proper.

Yeah, I'm from town too and yeah we do say "main no" but people from other parts of the island and they speak different. I to don't get how people say we speak like Jamaicans either because to me we don't, but I get it all

You do sound like Jamaicans. The truth is people outside a group tend to focus on the similarities between people whereas those within the group tend to focus on the differences. Yes, I agree, Montserratians sound more like Jamaicans than any other people.
