Thank you for this! As an historian and a Gospel Doctrine teacher I have often said knowing the history behind the revelations is integral to understanding them. Many of my own family just shake their heads at me...and some of those in my class also. They often say "there she goes again!" But when I was converted I knew the Book of Mormon was true and then I needed to know all about Joseph Smith and the history. Thus began a 30 year journey which if I'd gone to college I'd have a master's degree at least. I did go to college to be an historian but not solely in Church History. I am grateful that my research strengthened my testimony and I'm grateful for all the wonderful resources we have available now that I did not have all those years ago. Again, thank you!

Thank you. Well said. History requires we try to understand the perspective and context of that time and that we do not view history through the lens of our time. That's a problem we have as humans in studying historical events and trying to force this events into our context.

Assumptions ....they are the whole framework upon which faith in Christ and His restored Church increases or decreases. Humility....is the keystone of faith, as The Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. Beautifully done, thanks to all.

If a policy is not eternal and can change, I have a question about the focus that used to be to encourage moms to be in the home and at the crossroads and all the honoring of those who sacrifice and make a priority to stay at home and be a homemaker. Is encouraging women in the home no longer church teaching? Is it like polygamy in that it had a time when it was needed but that time has passed? How do I know when homemaking is a good value and goal or if it is simply an application that is just one of many ways to live life and we no longer consider it any kind of ideal?

Maybe it was just my view or thought but I sure felt like it was taught by prophets and apostles

It has been taught by prophets and apostles within the context of their respective times that women should stay home to care for their children. It has also been taught that women have and will continue to make important contributions in all aspects of society including those outside the home. The Family A Proclamation to the World says, "Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives-mothers and fathers-will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. "The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed." Individual decisions about whether or one or both parents work outside the home and what role each parent plays in the childrearing process should be made between couples and the Lord.

How is a narrative which is not supported by any archaelogical findings nor by any confirming secondary source could ever be a credible historiography?

Great point. The theory of the Book of Mormon geography fits this perfectly. Just after the Book of Mormon was published, the Rochester Observer newspaper wrote and asked Joseph Smith what the Book of Mormon was, as they had only heard stories and opinions. Joseph wrote back and told them "it was a history of the ancestors of the Western tribes of Indians..." And clearly taught the members at the time and the Native Americans living in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois at the time, that those very same Native American tribes of Fox, Sac and Sioux, were the descendants of the people in the Book of Mormon. Shortly after, Joseph received a revelation from Christ commanding him to send missionaries to THE Lamanites. Not a remnant of, a splinter of, or anything else but THE Lamanites. He obeyed, as written in our D&C sections: 28, 30 & 32, and sent missionaries to: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and as far west as Missouri and as far east as Western New York. So, we don't have to theorize or wonder exactly where the Book of Mormon lands are, they are in the Great Lakes region, U.S.A. that supports both archaeology and revelation from God on this topic.
