Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.
arabislamicstudies.exeter.ac....
arabislamicstudies.exeter.ac....
Professor Pappe then joins, diving right into Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks on October 7th, including the media’s persistent revenge narrative arming the population for a compassionless siege on Gaza, the pervasive understanding by Israeli civilians that the Israeli army and government can’t and won’t protect them, and why - despite seeing the necessity - the Israeli public is not open to a discussion of alternatives to Israeli occupation. Stepping back, Professor Pappe then walks Sam and Emma through the genesis of the Zionist movement as an attempt to redefine Jewish identity as a nationality amid increasing persecution (and national-identity building) in 19th-century Europe, tackling backing of the project by European states and the US during the onset of the 20th Century, as they sought a clean expulsion of Jews from Europe, with an extra emphasis for the British on expanding their sphere of influence. After expanding on the Western-led colonial structure of the establishment of Israel - particularly in the ethnic cleansing of local populations - Ilan Pappe walks through the thriving cosmopolitan world of pre-Israel Palestine, one in which communities and religions coexisted, as a proper pretext for a discussion of the following eviction and cleansing of these local populations in the leadup to the Nakba in 1948, also touching on the use of Europe’s own crimes against Jewish people as a justification for the violence being imposed upon the Palestinians from 1948 on. Wrapping up, Sam, Emma, and Professor Pappe explore the obvious failings of an Israeli two-state solution, why a single multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy with full rights for Palestinians is the only viable option, and how Israel and Palestine are reading the international responses to the occupation.

@@rachelforshee6014LOL. Since his account of what happened (Palestinians were forced out against their will) matches human nature and everything we can glean from human history, versus the 'preferred narrative' of those applying continuous violence to the Palestinians (they voluntarily abandoned their homes, and businesses, and property, and took their children to be homeless refugees as a 'gift' to strangers who themselves were regugees from foreigners' wars) is on its face nonsensical... he seems pretty grounded in reality.

Thanks for this interview Sam, professor Pappé is one of the most humanistic historians in the world. As a Palestinian, I can't find a better way to resolve this problem than creating a secular democratic state for ever one . There is a better alternative which is islamic system that proven to be the best system for equality, if you paid attention to what prof Ilan said you would have know as a palestinians that muslims, jews, christians lived together and they didn't know what was the religion of each other and lived in peace under ottmans.

Because this also goes for the antisemitic inflammatory pamphlet "the protocols of the elders of zion" which by 1948 was a bestseller in the region - a situation which was possible because Adolf HItler and Haj Amin al-Husseini (the muslim spiritual leader in Jerusalem) were on quite good terms with each other when it came to the so called Jewish question. I found this interview moving, because Pappe displays such compassion and understanding of how things got to this point without denying the humanity of anyone involved. The vision of a multicultural nation where Israelis and Palestinians live together in peace seems so far away, but he reminds us that it existed in the past. I think of places like Ireland, or even Europe post WWII - who would have thought that all Europe would one day be united when Germany was ruled by Nazis? But it will take first an acknowledgment of what has happened, and what is happening now, and a genuine commitment to finding a solution.

This is the best point to make. Everyone coexisted before the creation of Israel. Jews were there and have been before it. There were Jews in much of the Islamic world as well. And it's very useful to portray the creation of Israel with other disastrous policies of the time, and at a time before worldwide decolonisation. It's time to heal old wounds, and you don't get that with bombings or terror attacks. 😓

Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt did that already in 1948 and not a single Refugee was able to return back to their home after the hostilities are over. so the Palestinian learnt their lesson and they rather die fighting for their home land than becoming refugees. By they way Egypt has over half million Syrian refugees since the war started over there despite their suffering economy so it is not a question of NOT HELPING! On recent interview with the Israeli army spokesperson by wolf Blitzer , he ask him if the bombing of a refugee camp in Gaza was at least led to the killing of the 1 hamas leader!? The Israeli army spokesperson said ( we can’t confirm)!!!! After killing about 400 Palestinians refugees, they still not sure!!!!

Evidentemente que os israelitas sabiam lá se tinham morto esse comandante do Hamas, só o saberiam se tivessem o corpo dele. A resposta deste porta voz do IDF, diz tudo.

26:25 interesting point, about the books and stuff. Blending out this historical fact does not bode well for the progressive nature of the left in America

In reading his book, the part about deportation of the Palestinians before the start of the war was one of many new things I’ve learned. I believe he also says the immigration issue into other Arab nations also was a big factor in the war and wasn’t just the UN declaration that we are told to believe. It’s an amazing read. BTW, mentioning his name or some others in respectful comments like this has at times deleted my comments and blocked me from posting for a day.

Too late for 2 state. But the Zionist DO NOT Want a 1 State Solution, as there are equal umbers of Jews and Palestinians. So this goes against the Zionist Jewish state Idea. The only solution is to get rid of political Zionism, whixh without a doubt is a RACIST & APARTHEID State

Top U.N. human rights lawyer Craig Mokhiber resigns November 1st, 2023 He says: “Textbook case of Genocide unfolding in the Gaza Strip” In his words: “In Gaza, civilian homes, schools, churches, mosques, medical institutions, are wantonly attacked as thousands are massacred “ In the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem homes are seized and reassigned based entirely on race, and violent settler pogroms are accompanied by Israeli military units.” Across the land, Apartheid rules.” What’s more, the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom and much of Europe are wholly complicit in this horrific assault Not only are these governments refusing to meet their treaty obligations, to ensure respect for the Geneva Conventions, but they are actively arming the assault, providing economic and intelligence support, and giving political and diplomatic cover for Israel’s atrocities” He says and knows fully well that Palestinians have suffered terrible persecution for decades in ‘Israel proper, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip

Hearing Ilan speak about Palestinian society pre-zionism sounds so unbelievably utopian (around 26:00). That multiple faiths were coexisting peacefully and collaboratively, is such a contradiction to what most of us in "the West" have been taught about the region all our lives. It fills me with such a deep sadness when observing the current state of Palestine when you realize what was robbed from them, but also gives me hope that this kind of coexistence is indeed a possibility.

I wonder how many people have died so far for the 'Bible' and all the land god wants for evangelical Christians--there won't be many people left when their god is done but I guess that's what they're going for--I just can't figure out which Jesus they're killing for as we have over 30,000 sects to choose from and they all disagree on really basic points, like dancing in a bar deserves eternal hellfire as punishment--not all Christians agree on that. So...?

Let’s clear this up right now. A handful of Puritans found themselves in the USA. They were a small aspect of a massive expansionist movement into Canada, USA and Mexico which rallied behind a g word of 90% of the Indigenous First Nations. Israel was exactly the same impetus by expansionism of England and the USA. The moral standards of the people who arrived in North America were various. Very few were back to the land Aristocracy looking for a new moral and philosophical home. The rest of the settlers were just glad to be alive. And the genocide of the First Nations continues until the United States give establishes economic and philosophical Reconciliation .

USA's Native Americans don't even have a sizable and substantial presence in the House of Reps whereas Canada's First Nations have local and national political presence. The Puritans named states patterned on Native American place names, gave the natives some casinos to run and then forgot them conveniently.

2:19 maybe the Israeli people have had a chance to look over their shoulder and suddenly realize that others are aware of how their govt has been treating their brothers for 78 years, that its obvious, that theyre surrounded by people that have truly been tolerant, neighbors that gave them an inch, only to have Israeli govt caught red-handed, taking like 100,000.00 miles. I'd be a bit nervous, too.

I’m a Syrian refugee and living now in Europe, I just can’t fathom why the Israeli government wouldn’t live peacefully both with the Palestinians and its neighbours. The Israeli policies which is oppressing the Palestinians depriving them their right and a state, mobbing around and destabilising the region by supporting dictators in the region in order to get the dictator to sign peace treaties again by force and brutality and supporting dictators around itself such in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon. Why can’t Israel just respect the Palestinians right and just live peacefully between us all!? I guess It has to do with the warfare which has built the Israeli economy. Expanding and taking land, then developing weapon and exporting it, then take on some minor attack “comparing to what the IDF DO” then retaliate by expanding and so on and so on..

If returning to one's religious origins geographically is such a great idea, I wish the Christians in the US God's speed as they return to Israel. After all, Jesus was a Jew who was born in Bethlehem. I'm sure the Jewish population will welcome them with open arms and grant them land and rights.

Death sentence for practicing the religion because its idol worship due to the trinity doctrine. Today they have plans on rejecting the Christians from Israel. Muslims on the other hand are tolerable because they worship the one true God.
