Thanks for this interview Sam, professor Pappé is one of the most humanistic historians in the world. As a Palestinian, I can't find a better way to resolve this problem than creating a secular democratic state for ever one . People whether are Muslims, Christians, or jews should be equal in rights and obligations.

strange statement, better than the secular system that proven to be catastrophic for equality we have just to see how USA is treating its african americans and indians. There is a better alternative which is islamic system that proven to be the best system for equality, if you paid attention to what prof Ilan said you would have know as a palestinians that muslims, jews, christians lived together and they didn't know what was the religion of each other and lived in peace under ottmans.

@@crocheting1366 LOL, Yeah so how that lslamic system working in yemen? I need look no further then how the Saudis (muslim arabs), treats yemen (muslim arabs) to know what you said is total BS. The Saudis have killed more yemen people in the last 9 years of the Yemen war, than Israel has palestinians EVER! Such atrocities and yet one can't get more islamic system then them, well except maybe Iran. By the way which is the true islamic system: Shia or Sunni? The amount of blood split on that question alone is outstanding.

26:25 interesting point, about the books and stuff. Because this also goes for the antisemitic inflammatory pamphlet "the protocols of the elders of zion" which by 1948 was a bestseller in the region - a situation which was possible because Adolf HItler and Haj Amin al-Husseini (the muslim spiritual leader in Jerusalem) were on quite good terms with each other when it came to the so called Jewish question. Blending out this historical fact does not bode well for the progressive nature of the left in America.

@@okernist-gut223 No information is a problem for the left. Information is only troublesome for reductionists who live in cages of anti-intellectualism sophistry and paternalist elitism on the right and centre right. I didn’t know about the brochure but it would makes sense to some degree that people outside of the Third Reich would be seeking whatever information or parallels they could have to get along with the new establishment cult in Germany and fascism in Europe. By the end of the war it would likely have been obsolete. Just guessing.

I found this interview moving, because Pappe displays such compassion and understanding of how things got to this point without denying the humanity of anyone involved. The vision of a multicultural nation where Israelis and Palestinians live together in peace seems so far away, but he reminds us that it existed in the past. I think of places like Ireland, or even Europe post WWII - who would have thought that all Europe would one day be united when Germany was ruled by Nazis? But it will take first an acknowledgment of what has happened, and what is happening now, and a genuine commitment to finding a solution.

This is the best point to make. Everyone coexisted before the creation of Israel. Jews were there and have been before it. There were Jews in much of the Islamic world as well. And it's very useful to portray the creation of Israel with other disastrous policies of the time, and at a time before worldwide decolonisation. It's time to heal old wounds, and you don't get that with bombings or terror attacks. 😓

Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt did that already in 1948 and not a single Refugee was able to return back to their home after the hostilities are over. so the Palestinian learnt their lesson and they rather die fighting for their home land than becoming refugees. By they way Egypt has over half million Syrian refugees since the war started over there despite their suffering economy so it is not a question of NOT HELPING! What is happening is Ethnic Cleansing and that is what Israel wants to do, so Egypt does not want to facilitate that. Hope it makes sense to you now. @@oskarfabian5200

It is essential to offer reasoned counterpoints to the narratives being marketed to the world at large. @@kaizokud42you confuse and perhaps knowingly conflate Judaism with Israel. Obviously you did not listen to anything Pape said in this video. It is the Israelis who have dedicated a concerted effort to erraticate and ethnically cleanse Palestine's territory going back to 1948 and still ongoing this very moment. YOU support this and think you have some sort of reverse Uno card by trivializing this history as a conflict of religious religious zealotry against Islam in general. Funny that the secularist Palestinian movement was undermined and forced out of power with the support of Israel decades ago. Just admit it and retain some semblance of honor and integrity by admitting that you prefer to cultivate a Palestinian population that has been brutalized and assualted so harshly that they turn to leadership that is fanatically religious and only committed to wage a jihad against their oppressors with virulence and hatred for the Jewish state of Israel.m

BTW, mentioning his name or some others in respectful comments like this has at times deleted my comments and blocked me from posting for a day.

Blending out this historical fact does not bode well for the progressive nature of the left in America

Top U.N. human rights lawyer Craig Mokhiber resigns November 1st, 2023 He says: “Textbook case of Genocide unfolding in the Gaza Strip” In his words: “In Gaza, civilian homes, schools, churches, mosques, medical institutions, are wantonly attacked as thousands are massacred “ In the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem homes are seized and reassigned based entirely on race, and violent settler pogroms are accompanied by Israeli military units.” Across the land, Apartheid rules.” What’s more, the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom and much of Europe are wholly complicit in this horrific assault Not only are these governments refusing to meet their treaty obligations, to ensure respect for the Geneva Conventions, but they are actively arming the assault, providing economic and intelligence support, and giving political and diplomatic cover for Israel’s atrocities” He says and knows fully well that Palestinians have suffered terrible persecution for decades in ‘Israel proper, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip

Too late for 2 state. But the Zionist DO NOT Want a 1 State Solution, as there are equal umbers of Jews and Palestinians. So this goes against the Zionist Jewish state Idea. The only solution is to get rid of political Zionism, whixh without a doubt is a RACIST & APARTHEID State

Hearing Ilan speak about Palestinian society pre-zionism sounds so unbelievably utopian (around 26:00). That multiple faiths were coexisting peacefully and collaboratively, is such a contradiction to what most of us in "the West" have been taught about the region all our lives. It fills me with such a deep sadness when observing the current state of Palestine when you realize what was robbed from them, but also gives me hope that this kind of coexistence is indeed a possibility.

Let’s clear this up right now. A handful of Puritans found themselves in the USA. They were a small aspect of a massive expansionist movement into Canada, USA and Mexico which rallied behind a g word of 90% of the Indigenous First Nations. Israel was exactly the same impetus by expansionism of England and the USA. The moral standards of the people who arrived in North America were various. Very few were back to the land Aristocracy looking for a new moral and philosophical home. The rest of the settlers were just glad to be alive. And the genocide of the First Nations continues until the United States give establishes economic and philosophical Reconciliation .

USA's Native Americans don't even have a sizable and substantial presence in the House of Reps whereas Canada's First Nations have local and national political presence. The Puritans named states patterned on Native American place names, gave the natives some casinos to run and then forgot them conveniently.

If returning to one's religious origins geographically is such a great idea, I wish the Christians in the US God's speed as they return to Israel. After all, Jesus was a Jew who was born in Bethlehem. I'm sure the Jewish population will welcome them with open arms and grant them land and rights.

AMEN SISTER! I expect a rich jacob descendant to give me their completely furnished home......and car. Fyi, they despise chridtoans and want them eliminated from the land as idol worshippers. Death sentence for practicing the religion because its idol worship due to the trinity doctrine. Today they have plans on rejecting the Christians from Israel. Muslims on the other hand are tolerable because they worship the one true God.

Israel has taken German officers to court on war crimes committed during the Second World War, In 1948 the British Government who were administering Palestine allowed and encouraged the creation of Israel and the displacing of the indigenous people by force, and since then creating Apartheid since then while funding Israel while they were killing Palestinians on a daily basis could the British government be taken to court for in fact facilitating this to happen?

I wonder how many people have died so far for the 'Bible' and all the land god wants for evangelical Christians--there won't be many people left when their god is done but I guess that's what they're going for--I just can't figure out which Jesus they're killing for as we have over 30,000 sects to choose from and they all disagree on really basic points, like dancing in a bar deserves eternal hellfire as punishment--not all Christians agree on that. So...?
