Ben Bikman is hands down the world’s leading expert in metabolic health - he has helped me best understand how your metabolism and particularly how insulin resistance instigates chronic health issues - through watching his videos and making changes to my diet and lifestyle I have lost 22 kilos, am reversing my DT2, reduced significantly high inflammatory and cortisol levels to normal and my kidneys are no longer leaking precious protein - the first time in 13 years. From the bottom of my heart thank you Dr Bikman - no endocrinologist or Cardiologist I’ve seen over the years has been able to assist me as You have - you should be the teacher to all trainee doctors - blessings from Sydney Australia x

My metformin I would start having bloated and and heartburn and indigestion and pain on my right side. And I felt it just gave me permission to eat whatever I wanted, I went on the keto diet and I went from 180 to 160, Took me 20 years to get that far. And I didn’t tell my doctor and she wanted to put me on insulin I think because she thought I was a diabetic ketosis. I just had a Lifestyle screening test and they listed me at prediabetes, and I think if I could lose another 15 to 20 pounds, and still keep my same diet and fasting routine, I will be fine. I’ve been on this diet since 2019, in 2019 I was completely carb free and fasting taking plenty of supplements. And by the way I’m 73 years old this past July

Also, because he is a scientist, the data is not conclusive on a keto diet for everyone, long term. I like that, here in this interview, he says that everyone should strive to attain ketosis once in a while. The only way I can get into deeper ketosis is to fast. And it is not until the 2nd or 3rd day of fasting that I can get above 1.5-2 on my keto mojo blood test. Even on a strict keto, reduced calorie diet (800-1000 cal), I rarely go above 1. Besides, fasting allows me to indulge in some carbs and still keep my weight down. I started fasting and eating strict keto in 2019 at 63 years of age. I lost 40 lbs easily over several month (and yes, I suffered severe hair loss, too). But I stalled out on weight loss. So, I carb cycled, and fasted more. Longer periods; up to 5 days, and more often. Got that final 20lbs off. Unfortunately, I have allowed a carb creep, 3 years later, and now have to use fasting again as a tool. I retired and don't find it as easy to do OMAD or even 2MAD. 😔 Plus I am not using as much energy throughout the day. Though I have taken up a sport, exercising 3x per week, I continue to gain. Ben's advice is so inspiring to maintain mental and physical health in the Golden years.
@romns1032 жыл бұрын
It could also be that the keto diet is more of a spectrum than a specific one size fits all way of eating. Your health going into it can affect what the optimal protien to fat ratio is for you. Genetics, age, autoimmune issues... all play a role in how low or high your protein/fat macros should be for you to heal or to feel your best.

For and many others, any sugar substitute causes me cravings for more and more sweets. I think that Dr. B’s insights as a scientist are technically valid, he is not a clinician. Clinicians see people on a daily based and see how much variation exists in people with regard to glucose level intolerance. Some of us are so bad at handling carbs and even fake sugars that have to stay in ketosis all the time in order to stay out of the black hole of carb addiction.

I don't fully follow insulin resistance of brain cells prevent glucose uptake and the cognitive problem is due to the fact that the brain cell is "glucose starved". My take on it is insulin has driven so much glucose into the brain cells that they become glycosolated much like Hb1C is formed in red cells. It is this glycosolation of brain cells that causes loss of function not that glucose cannot get into the cell.It is exactly the opposite--too much glucose chronically inside brain cells. In Type II diabetes the cells are overfilled with glucose why would it be different in brain cells?
@JasonBuckman Жыл бұрын
Because you also have Type II wrong. Insulin resistance is from high levels of insulin, not from being glycosolated. The brain will use up the glucose and no longer be glycolosated.

What does it mean to exercise at the beginning of a fast? Is it exercising after eating?
@wardenclyffe2072 жыл бұрын
Bikman said that exercising before fasting would put you in ketosis much quicker. I doubt that exercising directly after a meal would be beneficial. A shorter fast of say 24h will lower insulin , drive up growth hormones and adrenaline and make you ready to exercise. So exercising right before eating makes more sense to me.
@bobcocampo2 жыл бұрын
@@wardenclyffe207 Walking after a meal helps too
@stephwessel73462 жыл бұрын
If I take a walk after last meal of day and then work out or a vigorous walk in the morning and then don’t eat until noon, ketones are higher right before I break my fast. This lets your liver use up the stored glucose before having to deal with more coming down the hatch. Dr Annette Bosworth has a great YT channel where she explains from an internal medicine doctor’s POV. She’s has also researched brain healing for years.
