Yes, personally I think and I've constantly said that The Time was the greatest band, in the highly competitive, 80's. But we still have to give credit where credit is due. It all started when Prince asked Morris if he cud use the song 'Partyup' on his Dirty Mind album, and in return he could get paid or play drums in a side band Prince was creating. Morris chose drums, but when it didn't workout with Alexander O'Neal on vocals, Morris was moved up front. A move he was intimidated by, but accepted. The Time's first album was all Prince, including background vocals, with Morris singing and drumming. And if you listen to the album's keyboard runs and the guitar solo on 'Get It Up' it's pretty easy to tell it's all Prince. I'm a guitar player and can easily tell the difference between Prince and Jesse. In fact Jesse said himself that he was on an album cover he never played on. The second album was more The Time, but Prince was still the writer, producer and boss. Later, in many interviews, Jimmy said that the tightness of the band, down to their steps, all came from the pressure of Prince. He said Prince got out of them stuff they didn't know they had. And, YES, Prince created something that outperformed his own band on many nights. The complete lowdown.

You must be very young to write that first sentence
@thespadestable4 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with pentz1, you must be very young and or very naive. (plus I doubt you are a musician) There is a major difference between what's done on an album, then translating that, to include the energy during a live performance. Yes Prince played a major role in all the studio versions of the song, but it was the members of The Time to learn on the parts as close to the album version as possible, then get on stage and play it in a manner that'll get the fans into the music. As all the band members stated, they were so good that Prince did not like the attention they were getting....Off of his songs! And let's not forget they were also Vanity 6's on tour band. Lastly, let's not leave out Matt Fink. He make claims that Prince performed all the keyboard solos in studio by slowing the tape down, record, then sped the tape back to normal speed, but it was Matt who then had to get on stage and perform them to damn near perfection, where no one really knows where Prince's input ends and Matt's begins, this include the infamous "When Dove Cries" keyboard solos. Side Note: I still believe Matt Fink created and recorded all those solos, it's just all the members feel the need to give Prince more shine than he actually put the work into. My proof is a lot of things you heard on his earlier albums all but disappeared after the members of The Revolution left, to include keyboard solos. And this goes for keyboard solos live on stage....He's does not perform any of them live.
@iain7134 жыл бұрын
@@thespadestable i mean Fink has been pretty specific on what he did and didnt do ..think it was only WDC that was slowed up...and as for the rest of it ...prince moved away from the oberh after the rev split so you wouldnt expect the same sound .. sure some things went uncredited ..or were miscredited ala shortberry shortcake ...but basically NAH
@thespadestable4 жыл бұрын
@@iain713 - Wendy and Lisa were the only members from either camp to really break away from being politically correct about everyone's involvement in the making of "Prince". As both mentioned, when they began to do their first album they had difficultly not sounding like the Revolution, because everyone gave their all and their talents to create the sound, and it was hard to tell where the Revolution ended and where each individual member began. Andre Symone took an issue after he left the band that baselines he had created or was working on would end up on several of Prince's follow up songs. It's awfully strange that after Matt Fink left the band, none of Prince's keyboard solos on any song after that sounded anything close to what was on the albums Matt was on? Matt Fink sound like "Matt Fink" on albums and live on the keys, but like Prince sounds like "Prince" on albums and live on the guitar. Everyone has their unique voicing and playing style no matter if they are playing a $100 Casio or a $3500 Korg.

I'd say Prince lived vicariously through them where he could put out more R&B oriented content while his pop stuff was taking off.

One of the most fascinating things about this tour, is that despite The Time washing Prince on this tour, he had a keyboard, vocal mic and bass hooked up to the soundboard next to the monitor, backstage in a draped off location. He would listen for the cues from his sound man, cubby and would play on everyone’s set. Playing keys, adding Adlibs, vocals, licks, he would be playing the entire time, just to end his night on stage. Prince was very frustrated with The Time, but the truth his he was own competition. He created this and they not only exceeded but were INCREDIBLY talented musicians in their own right. They challenged him and while he didn’t like it, he couldn’t deny it. I think knowing Prince was behind the scenes contributing to the same greatness that outdid him says a lot about his ultimate loyalty to the music, more than himself or anyone else.

It must have been crazy for Prince to have to follow a kick ass band like the Time, especially when he wrote all their songs lol. He should have just let the Time headline their own tour while he did his own without them.
@horrorpowerfilms94813 жыл бұрын
The problem wasn't The Time stealing anything from Prince, the problem was that Prince wasn't an establish act yet and he din't anticipated that The Time will get cult RnB succes with just one album, meanwhile it took him 3 albums for the same, but Prince was going for a higher road, mainstream succes and it's fair to say that as Prince was naive about dealing with The Time succes, The Time were even more naive and immature as dealing with The Prince opportunities, in the words of Bobby C "many din't see that they were part of a bigger boat" Obviously Prince had plans for The Time solo tours and more, but they were to egocentric to see that. The reality is that with no Prince there was no The Time and even worse, with no Prince record deal, there was no The Time record deal. The Time burn them selves out and they still are in denial.

It's been confirmed by the Prince Vault website that this concert was really from January 2nd, 1983 (it's the one that shows Prince and the Revolution performing "Controversy" through "Automatic"). The one with Prince and the Revolution performing "Controversy" through "Head" was from December 29th, 1982, and that concert is part of the 1999 Deluxe (Prince even shouted: "Houston, Merry Christmas!").

I can see why Prince ended up being so great. When you have a group of guys this talented on your heels you have no choice but to be great and keep pushing to be better every single day.

Terry and Jimmy are fantastic but the songs that were crafted on Condensation (Original 7) weren't nearly as good as Prince's productions.
@FoxyChariot3 жыл бұрын
@@gentrydaniels Prince fired them but Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went on to become some of the biggest hit makers of the late 80s (ironically when Prince’s relevance had started to wane). Prince was later imitating a style that they created (new jack swing) instead of the other way around (Minneapolis sound/synth-funk). Now that being said, Prince wasn’t quite as relevant in 87 (public interest had shifted away from funk rock and new wave and onto new jack swing and hip hop) as he was in 84 but his best record, Sign O The Times released that year.
@gentrydaniels3 жыл бұрын
@@FoxyChariot I'm not questioning Jimmy and Terry's talent. My point is that Prince put together The Time and crafted their sound. In my opinion, the tracks were better and sounded more authentic when Prince wrote, produced, and arranged the songs. As far as the New Jack Swing, that was Teddy Riley that popularized that style.

this band sounds so good live. some concerts you go to and it sounds nothing like the record because the studio usually covers a lot. these guys can just flat out play which is why it sounds so good live.

WOW, how in the world did Prince have all of that energy to rehearse and groom 3 bands for one show on this tour even at that youthful age? The HUNGRIEST, hardest working Man in show business even back in the day.That is why I will keep on wearing my Prince - 1999 album black hoodie that I bought from the Estate store. I'll admit that The Time had him on this show because that reception after 777-9311 was victorious.

Kyle Christian I agree. Prince took them off the bill in big cities like LA and NYC during this tour because they were better than his band. He messed up big time as he could have had an empire of talent if he had kept his ego in check.
