Here in 2024 after having reviewed his stats, this man is a forsure first ballot HoFer. His receiving stats are somewhere in between Gonzalez & Gates. He has less all around receiving stats than Gonzalez but more catches, games, and receiving yards than Gates. Since all three of them never got a ring, Gonzalez is already in the hall and Gates is on his way there, it is a no brainer that Witten will be there as well.

Shannon is spot on about Gronkowski, gates and Tony g, but Jimmy Graham hasn't done enough to be in the conversation yet. He dominated for a few years with drew brees and then is hardly a pro bowler (with Russell wilson). Now he gets to play with Rodgers, imagine if Tony Gonzalez got to play with that cast of qb's
@johnr4868
@johnr4868 6 жыл бұрын
Benny Hath I think what he's saying, is that over the course of his career, he's never been the best active TE. It was TG and AG early, then Gronk and Graham picked it up after them. Not that Graham is an all timer, just he was the best at his position for awhile.

John Rosetta I watched it again and totally agree with you. My point (which I still stand by but now realize isn't all that relevant to the video) is that Jimmy Graham doesn't belong in the conversation of best TE's of the 2000's-2010's, at least not yet

Witten didn't get credit for being the best TE because people looked at his receiving totals in comparison. But Witten didn't consistently put up those numbers because he actually blocked. For a while, he was considered the best blocking TE in the game. Witten was an all around TE. He didn't have any flaws in his game. Even in his prime he had the speed to make plays down the field.

BB 27, I think it probably has something to do with the fact that the LITERAL back half of (14 years playing, final 7 were played with Tony G in the league) his career landed right on the front end of Tony G’s, so there never was a time to truly sit back, relax, watch the film, and be like, “no one else is gonna touch that man’s records” because Tony G was already well on his way to Shannon’s TE records at the time both of them were playing.

If you only look at his receiving stats, sure he's not the best TE of his ERA. But people forget, he was the total package. He blocked exceptionally well and was basically the 6th man on the O-line for huge chunks of his career because their line was atrocious until a few years ago. In the red zone especially he blocked a ton. Add all of it together and I think you COULD make a case for him being a better overall TE than these guys even if their receiving numbers were better.

Witten was always Romo's 1st option even when the play called for otherwise and was open. He only got the production he did due to relationships w Romo. Similar to manning/Harrison. Any true top wr would have done 2x what Marvin did w Peyton.

He has less all around receiving stats than Gonzalez but more catches, games, and receiving yards than Gates. A stupid question. Since when is run after catch a requirement? If that's the case you can take half the TEs and WRs out the hall of fame. Who says Tony Gonzales is the standard or Antonio Gates. If that's the case then take. Kellen Winslow out. Jason Witten put up numbers, moved the chains and scored TDs. Hall of Fame.

The only people that who should have any say into who gets in the hall of fame, are the people in the hall of fame. not sports writers who probably never even picked up a football much less played the sport. to me he is a hall of fame TE

You know what's funny about Jason Witten, he just worked and went about his business but was only famous due to him playing for the Dallas Cowboys. The lack of team success by the Cowboys put Witten at a disadvantage of how he'll be looked upon as all-time great in terms of status. Jay Novacek was a solid and good sometimes great tight end but his team success made him famous and great - he was the glue to that offense in the 90's Cowboys. Witten had those same qualities and could have been that during his career but those Dallas Cowboys' Romo-led teams were choking year after year because they were not serious and their leadership was not solid at all... there was no grit or power nor sense of urgency to win titles from those guys during Witten's time there and you could see during his press conference there was regret that he could not win a title because the Cowboys (had they been serious enough) could have won 2 either with Parcells or Phillips and too-little and too-late for Romo in Dak's rookie season because of injuries to Tony Romo. Witten just has to feel good about the work he put in, that's all a man can do.

This is a very thoughtful, carefully dissecting discussion on HoF criteria of an individual (Jason Witten) that should have strong consideration for enshrinement. However, understanding the likes of very good players left out the HoF like yesterday, LB Zach Thomas and G Bob Kuchenberg of the Dolphins, leaves me to believe the HoF is at a level where many "very good" players may never be inducted. Thank you both for giving a noteworthy talk on this subject.

Jason Witten is one of the most complete players at the TE position, a guy who was equally good blocking and catching. Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates couldn't block my wife. Also Witten had 4 1000 yd seasons. Gates only has 2 Gates does have a huge edge in TD's but that was the way San Diego's offense was designed, whereas the Cowboys tended to run in the redzone. Not to mention San Diego's receivers were garbage for the most part.

I'm a Cowboys fan and I don't like listening to Skip talk about the Cowboys because he's a idiot. That being said, Skip is wrong again as usual. Witten was the best all around TE in his era because he blocked like an offensive lineman and was nearly unstoppable in the passing game even though he wasn't nearly as athletic as the 4 guys Sharpe mentions as the best of his era. It's Gonzalez first, then Witten, then Gronk/Gates, the Graham who was only dominant a few seasons with the Saints. Gronk was unstoppable when he was on the field, but the greatest part of ability is AVAILability, and Witten not only missed just 1 game in 15 years, but he played over 90% of the offensive snaps every year. People shouldn't let Fantasy football cloud their judgment here, Witten is a first ballot HoF player.

I understand and agree with a lot of the points they made here, especially about how he never completely dominated in his era, but holding his lack of playoff wins or SBs or whatever other BS against him is ridiculous, and needs to stop. In basketball, those sorts of things may be relevant, given how much of an impact singular great players can have on the game, on both sides of the ball, and especially with how the game flows continuously, but in football, they really shouldnt matter, bc it's the ultimate team sport. No player on the field, not even a QB or MLB (as Skip mentioned) has enough of an impact on the game to evaluate their greatness based on how many wins and rings they have. Case in point, Trent Dilfer has a ring, from a season he started in, so does Brad Johnson, and Doug Williams, Joe Namath, etc, and Jim Plunkett has two (though Im not sure if he started at all during the season(s) he got them in), but Dan Marino has none, yet there should be no doubt in anybody's mind that Marino is greater than all of them, Barry Sanders, I believe, went to the playoffs only once in his career, and I dont think he ever won a playoff game, yet his numbers and tape clearly show that he was greater than Emmitt Smith (Sanders' ypc and ypg are much higher), who won 3 SBs and was part of arguably the most dominant team(s) in NFL history.
