That's because recent DNA evidence strongly indicates that the Anglo Saxons gradually emigrated to Britain over a long period of time, lived alongside the native population who adopted the Anglo Saxons culture. It was not an inundation and overthrow of the existing Social structure as it was during the Roman and Norman periods. In addition to that the language, that was by then Germanic, endured through the Norman conquest and was eventually adopted by the Elites (who spoke a version of Norman French) which is why it remains a Germanic language to this day -although with a percentage of French words that exist alongside the Germanic foundation. That is my understanding at least - after watching loads of YT documentaries.
