Generalists also get to apply skills from one domain to another. Generalists also show they can absorb many different things. I got my bachelor’s nearly 40 years ago. After 10 years in a role which used that degree I did another qualification and moved. From finance to IT

Hoi Nate, I watched your 3 videos and it's a difficult time for you. But will you survive and improve? Certainly, no doubt whatsoever. All based on you realism and honesty that I see in the videos. For what it's worth, I would advise you to focus on the surgery and recovery. It will remove doubts and after that you can focus on a new job. Hands on Experience is better than Paper Experience. However as the Ind's all over the world are slowly becoming more Digital and in to Robotics, those with say Software Degrees will be seen more better than someone who has Hands on Experience, in such things as Factories and Engineering. Hope that makes sense? Good luck for the future and I kind of think I am good at telling if people are Good or Bad, I do believe that you are the former and will do great no matter where you land up , now or in the future.

I entirely agree about skills versus education. My husband used to run a department in an aerospace company and was at a meeting to discuss the type of person they needed to recruit and one of the other managers said they must recruit college graduates because they would have the necessary knowledge and skills at which my husband pointed out that he was not a graduate,! Ah yes but you're different was the answer,! My husband often found specialist graduates did not have the common sense or wider experience for the job. Good luck Nate!

It is not only who you know. What drives me crazy is that companies nowadays search for the 110% applicant for the job. I had many job applications where I was rejected because I couldn't offer secondary technology (software development in my case). HR should be more focused on if a person fits the team. You have to familiarise yourself with the new job anyway, even if I know 100 percent of the technology, as every company does it a bit differently. And companies should be more open to train employees rather than waiting months because the 110% applicant hasn't shown up. But it is good to see you back up, Nate. Greetings from Germany 😊

I'm in the same boat, kind of. I heard from an employer that laid me off last year and they have my exact position open as fulltime instead of contracted now. I'm still waiting on a phone call, too.

Best wishes!!! My husband started off as a bricklayer when he was 14 or 15. Later in life, he ended up as a food factory auditor / quality manager for the whole of eastern Europe.

That's great, helps give you confidence and feel wanted. Life does have a habit of working out better than you think. You're right, its who you know, that gets you in to interviews, which as you say is better than paper CVs and resumes, which are checked by robots Have a good weekend

Just a word of advice here - you have this hire-and-fire system in the US. If you are getting fired on the same day, that's tough. But it also means that employers can give it a try when hiring, even if the employment history isn't perfect. This is fairly different in Germany. In Germany, it's much less about the people you know but A LOT more about the professional background. Hiring people is seen as a rather serious investment - also because of the tough labor laws. Firing people isn't as trivial (after the probation period at least). And usually, managers will have a serious look at your formal qualifications. Of course, this depends on the specific job. In Germany, it's not common to provide references but written testimonials from your previous employers - this is quite formalized, actually. So, if you ever intend to migrate, you better start collecting testimonials (on a company letter). It's probably not as strict as it used to be (I migrated from Germany to Australia a while ago) but it'll not be a hell of a difference today.
